Freo and Sydney, with Freo top 4 no doubt, Stdney plays really tough, uncompromising footy, and will go the distance, but lacks the class to finish.

Freo has much more flair, and may even make the GF, but lets face it, unless Collingwood has a incredible run of injuries, or the St Kilda girl gets on the wrong tram and ends up at the wrong ground !!, the Collingwood is a shoe in.

Which non-Victorian side will be first to challenge for a premiership?

I have never liked it, bring on a longer season, and pre-season games in regional Australia

Time to go: NAB Cup

Where are they going to fit the 60.000 extra fans in, they may get up to 40,000 at the Gabba, and 25,000 at the GC stadium.

Has the sun in QLD got to Josh ??.

Gold Coast Suns and Brisbane Lions create own history

Collingwood, Freo GF.

GC to finish second last, WCE to finish last, Worsfold sacked mid season …..ha ha

AFL 2011 season preview

Moonface said The AFL is by far the biggest beneficiary of all government money for developing AFL grounds and facilities for the EXCLUSIVE use of AFL.

Do you re-read what you write at all ?, of course if government money is spent on AFL grounds, then it stands to reason that the biggest benificiary will be the AFL, if the government spends money on soccer grounds then soccer will be the biggest benificiary !!.

Blacktown stadium is 6 months of the year for cricket, it is not just for the Sydney AFL exclusively, i dont hear you bleating about cricket getting a stadium !!, just as i dont hear your moaning about the showgrounds getting upgraded for the RAS.

Lowy's legacy is much worse than it looks

I guess you would have a point, if the TV ratings were woeful, club memberships down, The AFL did not have a great TV deal, clubs were actually wound up/cut, and crowds were 45% down.

There is no comparison in any way shape or form.

Lowy's legacy is much worse than it looks

Well said Wookie, i normally respond when i have read something regarding Australian football that is just not true, in this instance a soccer fan stated ……………. Moonface said |

Those ASC figures are misleading as they do not include government money to develop AFL facilitiies and ovals for AFL, like Blacktown and the Sydney Showground which will be used EXCLUSIVLY by AFL.

This comment is just plainly not true !!

Lowy's legacy is much worse than it looks

If the A-league was a share, using any stat that you like, they would be dumped, and the current board would go with it.

Cold hard facts often hurt, one club dumped, amother on the way, clubs bleeding money, WC extreme botch up, tv ratings are woeful and crowds 45% down, …………… is this Lowy’s legacy.

Lowy's legacy is much worse than it looks

2005/6 11,281
2006/7 12,985
2007/8 14,608
2008/9 12,181
2009/10 9,831
2010/11 8,393

Dont know about , japanese candlesticks, exponential moving averages, cumulated moving averages or others, but the crowds are 15% down or thereabouts every year, so in terms that most people can understand around 45% down on 2007/8.

Lowy's legacy is much worse than it looks

Karma is a beautiful thing.

Crunching numbers on the code wars

Lowy's legacy is much worse than it looks

I really get sick of this, you and plenty of others have been told repeatedly, in FACT, it would not be an exaggeration that you have been told a MILLION times, Blacktown oval is for football and cricket, and money was put in by both CRICKET NSW, The AFL and the various governments, the stadium is used 6 MONTHS A YEAR BY EACH SPORT .

The Showgrounds, will be used by GWS Giants, but money has been jointly put in by the showground people, the AFL and governement, the showground will be used throughout the year by the show people, particuarly between 14-27 April (which is during footy season), the place needed redevelopment, and cricket may also use the arena now.

I would imagine that GWS will have 6 months a year on this ground as well.
Handouts are taxpayer funded and wasted WC bids, what a joke, what a serious joke.

Get it right and get it right now !!, neither of those venues are exclusivly for the AFL, and nor should they be, get your facts straight.

Lowy's legacy is much worse than it looks

Interesting analysis, I dont know about you, but i would prefer to own my house rather than be paying it off or renting,

Owning your own property has many benifits, including playing when you want, renting out the facility etc etc etc .

The SANFL own their land and stadium, it gives them a pretty good bargaining/bartering rights when dealing with Governments/other sporting bodies etc.

The AFL/WAFL/SANFL has been bent over a barrell for many years by cricket authorities (MCC, SACA), and i think historically this has been the big impetus for owning their own grounds.

It’s human nature to seek the best deal for yourself, your family, your workplace that you can.

Answering the AFL's $1 billion question

Big difference between teams and clubs, for EX: there is actually 93 teams in the fixture for AFL QLD this season, including the Northern teriitory, GC Suns and BL ressies who contribute one team each.

They are spread across 7 divisions, and except for the last 2 divisions all have reserves.

http://www.sportingpulse.com/comp_info.cgi?c=1-109-0-143941-0&a=FIXTURE&pool=0&round=0

I also might add that there are around 35 to 40 under 18 teams.

Why there's no need for code wars in Australia

Hows this for ridiculous, hopefully the ban is overturned.

Should one strike be enough in AFL?

For someone who does not like football (AFL), gee, you know a lot about it.

Everything, and i mean everything, is a comparison to soccer to you, quite sad.

Should one strike be enough in AFL?

You make a fair point, but, how many people make a living out of trading shares, futures, warrants etc and make 2.2 million …………all from the comfort of their chair in front of their computer screen, quite a few i would suggest, are they not worthy of the money they make ?.

It’s all very subjective i think, banks and telcos whose exectutives are payed squillions to shed jobs etc are in my book payed outlandish salarys immoraly.

Demetriou is probably overpayed a bit, but do i find it objectionable on moral grounds, … not at all, … he is growing jobs, and the business, and the money is returned to the clubs (shareholders if you like), and grass roots football.

Why Andrew Demetriou is worth every penny

Interesting article from Townsville, http://www.citylifemagazine.com.au/Townsville/online_magazines/11mar/index.html

1,400 kids running around kicking the sherrin, burley, faulkner, on Townvilles ovals playing Australian football.

Had no idea AF had built this base in Townsville, please note that in the first paragraph that it is duly pointed out that RL is king, so no’one is saying that AF will take over.

Perhaps a team is needed in NEAFL from Townsville, the grass roots base is there.

In 2000 83 people were playing AF, in 2010 1,800

Why there's no need for code wars in Australia

I would agree, does not faze me, the AFL is in a very good position financially, they have the futures fund, they will eventually own Docklands.

Some how if they dont get the 1billion, you will hear it shouted from the rooftops that the AFL is a failure by the haters, but AFAIK funding for GWS and GC has already been put aside.

I really agree with your last paragraph ……………. “…if the AFL doesn’t get $1billion stand by for childish articles from the like of Masters crowing about it….and if the AFL does get $1 billion or more there’ll be more conspiracy theories and excuses.”

I must admit the roar provides some very good conspiracy theories from time to time.

Answering the AFL's $1 billion question

The world is an oyster, but besides all that, there is plenty of growth left in the NSW, QLD markets and a 3rd team in WA.

Competition is good.

Answering the AFL's $1 billion question

Maybe 3 teams would force action, but on the other hand, if the team was based south (mandurah, Peel region) , a Geelong style stadium (30k) could/would /should be built down south as i could not imagine all those fans coming to Subi for their games.

i have actually heard talk that the WCE are looking to leave Subi (admin + training ) and are looking at Joondalup Arena.

Answering the AFL's $1 billion question

Seem to be different people, the old Australian football (soccer)was KB, (with avatar), the new Australian football has no avatar.

Weird though as the name is the same.

Why there's no need for code wars in Australia

You can guarantee that places like Tassie, Darwin, Canberra and Nth QLD are, or will be on the radar, a 3rd team for Perth or southern WA (Bunbury, Mandurah, Peel region), are also possible places for teams, remember GC has only 500,000 people, Canberra has around 400,000, and there will now be the same amount of teams in QLD as there is in WA.

Both WA teams this year have sold their memberships out, The Eagles because if you dont renew there is a 8,000 member waiting list, and you wont get your membership back, and the Dockers because of the premiership window and exciting team prospects.

WA could have a new team tomorrow and have a 20,000 membership base overnight.

Answering the AFL's $1 billion question

I cant really comment on QLD country, but i am led to believe that there is a very good quality comp in Cairns, but whether it is bigger than league in cairns i dont know, i tell you what i am suprised by, and that is the AF comp in and around the Darling Downs in QLD, with 9 senior teams in the district, it is quite big, for a rural QLD comp, with very little tradition of AF

http://www.sportingpulse.com/comp_info.cgi?c=1-3485-0-148974-0&a=FIXTURE&pool=0&round=0

I would agree with your “Barassi line”, in both Canberra, Wagga, Batemans Bay and Cobar less so, AF has good presence, below those towns bar pockets AF is the main code.

From memory Cobar plays in the northern Riverina FL, but RL would be the main football code, but they have had a real struggle getting a team up lately

Why there's no need for code wars in Australia

What are you saying ?, that the a-league final which rated 36,000, was better viewing than the AFL drawn grand final, which rated 3 million, i guess 3 million people appear to disagree with you.

Why I'm optimistic about football in Australia
