It’s nice to see such fiery debate over this article.
Pete, in response to your obvious unhappiness at my labelling ‘our’ Australian captain as a national leader; I simply meant it to mean that as captain of an Australian team (with a strong emphasis on Australian), that MIchael Clarke is no doubt a leader of a certain aspect of our country’s culture. I did not intend to put him into a political light or to suggest that an Australian cricket captain has the power to lead a country; I merely view an Australian captain as the name may suggest it should be viewed, as a captain of Australia. Thankyou for letting me clarify.
I am also sure that there are many young children, teenagers and adults who look very strongly up to an Australian cricket captain, be it Sir Donald Bradman – an integral member of Australian History – or Michael Clarke, a young captain simply trying his best to perform.
Basically, the foundation of my argument was that Australians need to support our sporting teams through the good times and the bad.
Public support is vital for our cricketers
Definitely worth arguing Tom. Port’s forward line are probably better with those names, even though you could say 2013 has been a breakout year for Westhoff.
But, in my opinion, defensively and in the midfield, I would say the Lions have the upper hand.
