How is the mention of sandpaper personal? It happened in Warner’s workplace environment.

Johnson 'low act' branded 'un-Australian' as Triple M reinstate fast bowler despite Warner brouhaha

‘Deserve’ has got nothing to do with it. Warner doesn’t deserve his spot in the Test team and hasn’t for a couple of years. Seems to have some powerful friends though.

The time for Smith to have ended his T20 career was after last year’s World Cup but he wasn’t playing because of the reluctance to drop Finch, a decision which probably cruelled any chance we had for the tournament. His comeback in the BBL was pretty amazing and shows what he might have been able to contribute given the opportunity but it was also a situation where the pressure was off and he had nothing to lose. These matches in India were a chance to show that kind of form in internationals and seemingly (I haven’t been watching the games – too late for me) it hasn’t been enough. Too bad – time to give someone else a shot.

Smith scrambling to make T20 World Cup squad as diminishing white-ball returns put spot in jeopardy

With not much really separating the candidates, Punter’s blessing is good enough for me.

Ponting anoints Warner successor, but insists Green must 'bide his time' to make Test squad

True – I’ll give you that one Bretto. But at the same time I don’t remember Dawson punching himself in the face in the dying seconds against the Pies at the G this year, nor Toby Green near ripping his own head off in the Prelim final. Both times it seemed pretty obvious it was a Collingwood player. Isolated incidents start to add up and look like a pattern year after year.
Don’t get me started on Brayden Maynard (or Cripps last year).

Hardwick hits back at critics over Suns getting preferential draft picks 'for the greater good of the game'

I think you mean drivel genius – look it up.

“That’s the way it is” – sorry I stand corrected – by definition that makes it fair. The VFL was facing financial ruin before the non-Victorian teams became involved.
Other things Victorian teams can be grateful for:
• Reduced travel
• Greater exposure to MCG
• Playing ‘away’ games in home city
• Home ground advantage in GF regardless of position coming in
• Greater exposure in high profile time slots
• Largest concentration of junior talent
• Reduced ‘go home’ factor for recruits
• Media bias
• Favourable (let’s be generous) umpiring/tribunal outcomes

Why bother? If you can’t see it for what it is in the here and now no argument I can make will persuade you.

It seems something that a certain segment of Victorian supporters can’t get their head around despite how blindingly obvious it is to anyone from an ‘interstate’ perspective.

Your comment about Vic players just underlines the point of what Hardwick is saying – they need local players to represent the club to really start taking a foothold. And I think you’re also exaggerating the levels of underachievement – I can’t think of a season in their entire history where the Suns have been widely predicted to make the top four. For all that Melbournians like to play it down the AFL is a Vic-centric competition in which even the weakest Victorian clubs have significant entrenched advantages. It is in the interest of the game to look to expand wherever it can and practical measures like the academies are a good start.

Probably yeah – I found it pretty frustrating and haven’t commented much since. Sorry for hijacking your comments section. For the record I’m with Lyno – Bazball is a joke and the reaction of the Poms to wandering Jonny’s dismissal was a farce. Glad they got sorted out in the WC – just a shame they managed to squeak into the top 8 for the Champions trophy.

'Load of s--t': Lyon unloads on Bazball, Bairstow and those Lord's louts

Yes – deftly done by Adelaide – identified a need and filled it. He looks the goods.

Given you were one of the few to leave a comment Rowdy I know it didn’t get past you – you’re like a truffle pig for Adelaide Crows content.

While I sympathise with your point Tony it’s not a great look for Roar staff to be criticising contributors when they are essentially your bread and butter. Let the other commenters sort it out. Some of you guys seem pretty sensitive – I had a bit of a disagreement with Tim Miller in the comments of one of his articles in the AFL area and those comments along with his responses have been deleted. Then I submitted an AFL article and it was never put among the headline articles and buried as quick as possible despite getting (by my estimate) at least 700-800 views. It comes off as petty and doesn’t encourage further engagement.

Biggest one I’ve seen I think. From memory it clipped the top of the stand still heading up.

Bats hit crazy distances: Joy of six diminishes as modern chunks of willow turn average batters into master blasters

Bazball (def): A concept confusing correlation with causality; Fleeting success acquired through unsustainable method; An illusion of theoretical underpinning.

'That is garbage': Marnus bemused and McCullum won't like it but Bazball to be immortalised in English language

Let’s hope so – he looks the goods but it’s a lot to ask of a second year player next year. As Woody says above a bad run with injury could leave things very thin back there, Borlase and Keane did ok in their limited appearances without inspiring a great deal of confidence.

The Adelaide Crows finished 2023 at the crossroads - which direction will they take next?

McAdam certainly – as much as I liked him as a player we have plenty up forward. I would have thought long and hard about letting Doedee go though – it feels like a mistake.

The Adelaide Crows finished 2023 at the crossroads - which direction will they take next?

Hard to disagree although they would be initially facing the same problem regardless as Doedee will be missing for half the year. His loss could potentially be hurting them for years though – he was easily among our top 10 players and an on-field leader and to lowball him as they apparently did seems shortsighted and mean-spirited from the outside. Worrell, Butts and Michelanny look like they will be a good combo but none seem to have Doedee’s game reading abilities.

The Adelaide Crows finished 2023 at the crossroads - which direction will they take next?

Ha – like the analogy but it took all four of them to get anything done.

It wasn’t very sporting was it old chap? Not going for a run or anything – just dozily hanging around out of his ground for some reason.

ENG-barrassed: Skipper facing the sack after Poms' nightmare loss to Sri Lanka - World Cup title defence 'is over now'

Thanks Rowdy. Agreed on Doedee in particular – I can’t see how a guy goes from being a candidate for the captaincy to out the door because of a badly timed injury, it doesn’t sit right. I’m still willing to give Nicks the benefit of the doubt ahead of 2024 – maybe he could use a bit more mongrel but whatever the style the coach needs to be connecting with the group and he appears to have that at least. Those ducks will need to start lining up for him next season though.

Thanks Valentino – I’m hoping for the best but I’ve seen it all go wrong too many times to ever get too bullish

The Adelaide Crows finished 2023 at the crossroads - which direction will they take next?

Perhaps it’s just that it’s so discombobulating to hear of the English taking a bath every few days.
