Between Marshal, Ryder, Membrey, Hayes and Sharman they’ve got more talls than they can currently fit on the pitch. Very few clubs have 2 genuine A grade key forwards like Hawkins and Cameron. Melbourne certainly don’t

The coming of the King: Why Saints fans should be excited to the Max

The link to trump stuff is fascinating though

AFL NEWS: Wines answers Covid rumours after heart issue, Buckley concern over Ryder bump, big guns sidelined

I think our experiences of this having dragged on are a little different, it’s getting harder and harder to read or hear some of the theories going around when you spend your life trying to keep people well.

It’ll fizzle when it fizzles, but for now let’s do what we’re asked and try to keep the hospital system from ending up like Port Adelaide’s 2022 season.

Hey Charlie on re-reading I’ve not only misread your comment but replied to about 5 others in one very nonsensical comment. Keep fighting the good fight and give the saints a good write up in the power rankings. Sorry and thank you and good night

That’s very generous but first impressions are usually spot on Yatts…

You didn’t happen to run into Paddy Ryder’s shoulder by chance yesterday?

Six Points: Swans benefit from AFL's dumbest rule, Saints must be praised, and Dogs' problems aren't just bad kicking

I’m glad Wines is recovered and doing well!

I cannot believe the ego and ignorance of footy journalists to go and make comments like that about Wines’ condition. Dylan Roberton had a similar, out of nowhere arrhythmia in the pre-COVID world and it was absolutely terrifying for everyone involved, including spectators watching from their living rooms.

I just want to read about how good the saints were this weekend (for once) without being reminded of all of the dumb stuff I have to hear on a daily basis at work by people who’ve done 2 minutes of reading on facebook or have watched a tiktok video.

Can I also just apologise to this original commenter charlie Keegan, who I think I’m in agreement with about the vaccine being completely unrelated to anything.

I can’t believe the ego and self belief the footy journalists have in floating this rubbish.

There’s a bunch of other university of tiktok certified experts floating around other posts and all I want to do is read about how great the saints were this weekend without being reminded about the dumb sh*t I hear at work everyday

Maybe it was the same for Dylan Roberton oh wait…
Is any symptom for the rest of eternity going to be attributed a coincidence too?

I think we can all agree that the issues at Moorabbin are almost solely due to Max Hudgton being benched for Zac Dawson (no offence) in the 2009 grand final. This is not me holding a grudge.

The biggest difference between 2020 and 2021 St Kilda was mental. The 2021 team dropped off massively in effort based actions like tackles, defensive running and forward pressure when they had their capitulations and when they turned it on were troubling the top sides if not for goal kicking (again mental), the first half against Geelong last year probably the best example (0goals 9 behinds I think).

Hill is a disaster but somewhat mysterious, Hanebury is a disaster with no mystery. The offloading of Carlisle, Frawley, McKernon is not surprise to people who follow the club, were all extremely cheap depth players taken in the post season. Some very exciting newer players in to watch though, particularly Cooper Sharman up front and Tom Highmore down back. Depth in the midfield and backline a big concern though after injuries last year (I think 5 of the starting 6 defenders were off at one stage).

AFL 2022 Radar: 'It's moving day' for the Saints to recapture glory days

Agree with most of your points. 2 things though…
Early on you say Callum Wilkie didn’t deserve to play every game and should have been dropped or managed. Disagree strongly with this, he’s been an incredible pick up and hugely undervalued to those who don’t watch the saints regularly. Plays on all sizes and rarely ever beaten one on one, handy for a team with not much key position depth.
Also with coffield going down with an ACL, Josh battle will have a massive role in the defence and this could be a make it break year for him, has the potential to be anything but often goes missing…

The four players who could make or break St KIlda in 2022

Saints had issues above the shoulders for a lot of the season. Their best was pretty good but their worst resembled training cones. They seem to have some plan around the draft and natural improvement and we’ll see how that pans out. I think their improvement in 2020 was due to high defensive pressure across the ground rather than just attacking transitions, and that was the first thing to disappear from the 2021 team.
Their age profile will change a bit this year too, there’s only one or two over 30s in the starting team (Ryder +/- Hannebury) and who knows how many games they’ll play. With an easier draw and a better run with injuries (fingers crossed) they could surprise a few who’ve decided to write them off in October.
I don’t really see how firing a bunch of people off field is going to make a sudden difference, it seems to be the gut reaction every few years when things don’t pan out

'Get serious': Ex-coach blasts St Kilda over repeated failures

Hi Nick, I’m a long time admirer of your articles! As an ex-outside back in D grade school rugby I never learnt much about scrums.
What is your take on the angle TT creates when scrumming? Is he at risk of a reputation for boring in like happened to Joe marler a few World cups ago?
Who is your tip for the starting second rowers for the tour?

Is Taniela Tupou top of the props?

Few years ago I worked in place that had a St Kilda 2010 premiers mug in the tea room. Drinking out of that mug and day dreaming about Lenny Hayes kicking the winning goal was the closest I’ll ever get to true happiness.

The top five 'what if' grand final moments

That’s a good list!
I’d throw Dougal Howard into the mix as well. He’s really our only tall defender to match up on the big key forwards and i reckon we’re cooked if he has any significant injuries.

In an ideal world Hill would be on this list given his salary and the trade arrangements but has barely made the starting 22 at times. Hopefully will get some form up in 2022!

The five players your team can least afford to lose: St Kilda

Agree about selling the farm to get Ben King, likely to lead to a loss of balance in the forward line and a loss of personnel or recruiting elsewhere

St Kilda season review: Anything but saintly

Spot on with the over dramatisation of the age issues.

Ryder, Geary and Hannebury the only players over 30 left on the list for next year and the team is playing without any/all of them on a regular basis.

It does sting sometimes to see how how good some of the players drafted around our picks in the 2012-2017 have developed/become.

St Kilda season review: Anything but saintly

How would you rate their season if they had made the 8 and crashed out (which could have happened had they not capitulated ‘unassailable’ leads on a number of occasions?
After last year I think anything below top 4 was below expectations

St Kilda season review: Anything but saintly

All good points but I think the biggest issue was mental for most of the year

St Kilda season review: Anything but saintly

I really want to dislike Petracca given the unfortunately outcome/reality of drafting McCartin but he seems like a really good person and a great young leader to have at your club.

St Kilda season review: Anything but saintly

Thanks for the article and good perspective on a not-quite-there list and a very disappointing season.
I think the list gets immediately put down as being way off contention by people despite showing such promise last year. Commentators (like Brad Johnson) will talk down the list at every occasion (anyone who watched the freo game will know what I’m talking about) without actually talking about the inconsistency. Their worst was very poor, possibly the worst in the comp in the first half of the season. Their best was very good and pushed very good teams (eg Geelong).
The inconsistency and particularly the lethargy early in the season were a big sign of issues between the ears for me. The fact we were down on all of the effort stats early in the season was a big worry and I hope the leadership group were able to grow from that period.
Offseason, I think a key defender is also a big hole to fill on the list right now (?Talia) and another interim ruck as Ryder has/is amazing when fit, Paul Hunter is nowhere near AFL standard (despite best efforts) and Max Heath needs a few years (and to finish high school).
Some other off season questions for me:
What do we do with Josh Battle – looked a gun defender a year ago but being played all over the field and never settling?
How does Paton fit back into the defence if fit and do we have another tall defender for teams like Geelong/West Coast with multiple key forwards?
What is the best midfield combination when all available players are fit?
I don’t like using injuries as an excuse but we should acknowledge that St Kilda had an underrated situation with injuries and most games I watched I heard about the injury struggles in the opposing teams only. I think we benefitted as a club by having to throw a few people in the deep end early on (eg Highmore, Sharman).
In regards to the recruits we’ve had over the last few years, when you look at what we traded for the 5 players in 2019 I think it was a good outcome and we’re a significantly better team for it. Our player development in the Lyon, Waters and Richardson eras was really poor and big part of the story for where we are currently.
It’s good to acknowledge there was money that needed to be spent and there were a few top up players (McKernnon, Frawley) who were never part of a longterm plan.
Hill is the big disappointment and I still don’t understand why his form has been so poor at times.
Crouch started very slow then was a reliable and key member of the midfield, I’m hoping he can hit some real form next year.
Butler was down on goal kicking but was the number one forward in the whole comp for forward pressure acts. I think this is a good sign of attitude adjustment following last year and hopefully a sign of some building mental resilience in a difficult part of the field to play in a losing side.
Jones had injury issues but was a key member of the midfield when fit and really opens our forward entries up with his pace.
Ryder was excellent when available and played about what would you’d expect from a 34 year old.
Very happy with Highmore, Sharman, Byrnes and Connolly for the moment.
Good to get to the draft and hopefully we can see some further organic growth and some real consistency next year.
Thank you for attending my TED talk

Well said Anne! A Healthy dose of perspective!

Hope you get back home soon and best wishes for your treatment. Such a horrible thing to happen to anyone, but especially with all the extra complications COVID.
