First time I’ve left a game early due to complete embarrassment. Kudos to the Highlanders who played with enormous energy and skill.

The Force looked sluggish. As WEST says they looked out of condition. No energy to chase kicks, yet Highlanders often put the Force under pressure with their kick chasing.

Taking the ball into contact they just looked soft compared to the Otago lads.

Lineouts – two of the tallest locks in the game and we looked vulnerable there.

I think the only positive I got was the maul defence.

Highlander’s rush defence was outstanding, so quick of the line, the Force never looked vaguely threatening.

Tragic night for a Force fan. I was going to take my family but they bailed because of the rain. Glad they didn’t come.

Highlanders heroics make for a disturbance in the Force

Cheeky Chook

Old heads and young guns in Wallabies squad to face French Barbarians

Nice article big chook, a very good read!

39 steps: How The Roar helped and hindered my addiction

Great game!

Scoreline perhaps not entirely reflective of the Wallabies efforts.

ABs were superb in capitalising on opportunities. A huge lesson for Aus where we had players standing in tackles looking for offload to zero options. ABs appeared to have multiple options every time.

Nice domination of possession for Aus but work to do to translate that into pressure. Don’t think we ever had the ABs under pressure like the Argies had for 10 or 15 mins.

Foley was great at 10, really paying off Cheika’s call, shame about the boot – what a time to have an off night! Izzie had a better night.

A lot to like, a few things not to like. I don’t think anyone let the Wallabies down which is a great effort.

Huge Kudos to the ABs, a magnificent side who need just a sniff of an opportunity to put points on the board.

Wallabies – Heading in the right direction.

Highlights: All Blacks run away with world-record 18th win

Nice article Matt.

I think Cheika has a little of the spirit of Jimmy Spithill in him. Who? The Aussie captain of the American’s boat in the last America’s Cup.

After race 7 he was staring down the barrel of a New Zealand whitewash. Everybody wrote them off. This is what he said:

“I think the question is … imagine if these guys lost from here. What an upset that would be. Um, I’m mean they’ve almost got it in the bag. So…. that’s my motivation. Um, you know that’d be one hell of a story. Um, that’d be one hell of a comeback. And that’s the kind if thing that I’d like to be a part of. I’ve been involved in some big fight backs you know, some big challenges and facing a lot of adversity and that’d be the kind of thing I’d love to be involved in”

What happened? Against ALL odds they beat the Kiwis

Saturday's Bledisloe a dream scenario for Cheika

He’s got form with Timani, so probably Sefa – maybe it’s Cheika’s way of a ‘gentle’ blooding before the first cap?

Wallabies team named to play Springboks: McMahon to start at 8

Excellent article Brett.

Agree Coleman and Hodge were highlights. Thought Hodge showed a good set of skills across the park and Coleman brought an intensity that has been lacking.

I think Quade has done enough to stick with. One thing about Quade makes him look worse than he is in defence – he always plays within himself, never overcommits. He reminds me of quality boxers in this regard, they avoid throwing too much into a punch and avoid losing their balance and getting a caning as a result. But in a rugby tackle it can look like you’re not trying, when in fact he has just found himself in a position that he can’t effect a tackle. In attack he needs creative runners that can read him, people like Beale and Folau I think are the best equipped to capitalise on his skills.

The midfield defence was indeed a mess, it seemed they were trying to execute something other than a standard drift. Either a coaching gamble that didn’t pay off or poor execution – I couldn’t decide.

Hooper is a confounding problem – great skills and heart but just seems ill suited to a classic 7 role as many have stated. How does Cheika make best use of him? Centre? Not too old to change.

DHP has had a couple of poor outings but this is the risk when blooding new players. He showed enough against an awesome English outfit that would warrant not writing him off. A game starting off the bench might be lesson enough.

Ultimately we have played a very good side in form and stable (England) and an outstanding side in NZ. We are where we are. People seem to forget where we were before Cheika and the astounding job he did to get us to the RWC. We need to give him some time and respect the fact that he hasn’t found the “team” yet. I’m reminded of the old movie with Jimmy Stewart about the Glenn Miller Band… he kinda knows what he wants but “that sound” keeps eluding him until one day a player cuts his lip and it forces a change in instruments and “voila” the rest was history. Who knows what cut lip will lead to a replacement that brings it all together.

Cheers, lil chook

Another week, another thumping. Watching the Wallabies shouldn't be like this...

Excellent critique Nick.

Another week, another thumping. Watching the Wallabies shouldn't be like this...

4. Arnold
5. Coleman
6. Dempsey
7. Pocock (C)
8. Timani
9. Genia
10. Cooper
11. Naiyarovoro
12. Folau
13. Hodge
14. Speight
15. Haylett Petty

17. Slipper
18. TPN
19. Douglas
20. McMahon
21. Powell
22. Toomua
23. Morahan

Hooper needs to rethink his position, he is not a 7. If Gill was available I would play him at 7 with Pocock off the bench. Pock looks a bit slow at the moment and has been run around a few times.

I would love to see Quade have Izzy to set up.

DHP had a bit of a shocker last night but deserves another chance. Reece Hodge for that crazy distance kick.

Demo will bring a bit of young and angry at 6.

Roar Forum: What changes should the Wallabies make for the Springboks?

Your dog was called Frank (RIP)… what’s the connection? I know he liked chickens… but bears were surely not his thing. 🙂

Can anyone challenge the All Blacks?

Yep, that makes sense to me Baldwin, plays to everyone’s strengths. Let’s hope Foley has a cracker and proves us both wrong.

Wallabies team for Bledisloe 2: Quade Cooper to start at flyhalf, Foley inside centre

hehe yeah so excited I wrote the wrong team *red face*

Well deserved! Soak it up!

Well done Canes, clearly the better side on the night. Outstanding defence was the highlight for me. Awesome tackling from “Fatty is a loafer”. Barrett lived up to expectations in all areas. Congrats to all the Highlanders supporters.

Fantastically entertaining game. Some highlights for me were the 75m+ territory gain from a Faf De Lerk kick; Ackermann at 8 did everything to prove that it wasn’t nepotism that got him a spot in the team; and the pairing of Elton and Faf – crisp delivery!

Faf De Klerk having a cracking game. 75m kick, precision passes, niggling breaks…

Wow, Lions are looking the goods.

Rory and Richard together – no one could argue that pairing was unbalanced. I wonder if there is a precedence – twin locks?

Anyway – on a completely different tact – I have a suggestion for an up and coming scrum half. Hooper. Solves all our problems!

Who are the up-and-coming Australian players in Super Rugby?

Canes definitely the better team but I thought there were a couple of surprise performances.

TMMM (The Much Maligned Mumm) – I thought he had a pretty good impact, especially in the mauls.

And the big fella Skelton – I thought that was one of the more complete games he’s played. We just need a couple 160kg props to lift him in the lineouts.

Kellaway continues to develop.

This is me trying to squeeze some positives for the Wallabies ;P

Waratahs vs Hurricanes highlights: Canes win 28-17

A very sad day for Australian Rugby

Highlights: Crusaders thump Rebels 85-26

Well, I’ll celebrate if the Tahs can dish out a Caning. Fingers crossed the Force can awaken and overcome a Storm – that’s one from the heart not the head.

Super Rugby tipping Round 16 – the penultimate desperate tilt

That ‘thing’ on my face happens to come in handy when packing down in the scrum. We’re a very tight five.

But enough of that, do you really think you can avoid being Caned?
