Footy Industry is the site I have used to look at ratings for a while and it’s a site I trust. Plus, even if Brisbane included the Gold Coast area, it’s still a poor figure because if it includes GC, it means it’s a larger audience, which would make the low ratings look worse.
Every little error? Please explain.
I have family ties to Fitzroy and the Lions. I’m a Collingwood fan but own Fitzroy and Brisbane jerseys, along with numerous DVD’s and books about the history with the club. I have a huge soft spot for them but I’m not going to shine away from issues they have which need to be addressed

No, there is no agenda against the Lions.
You need to think about the different positions the Suns and Lions are in,
Gold Coast entered the league in 2011…the current ratings, audiences etc they have at the moment aren’t that bad, considering their scenario.
On the other hand, Brisbane have been in the AFL since 1986. For them to have numbers very similair to a 4-year old club is extremely concerning.

I have updated the article to reflect the FTA numbers.
And, as noted at the end of the piece, Footy Industry was used to get the ratings, which states the number of viewers in Brisbane.
Also, I did state the three games on seven are for a Victorian audience, which is a concern, as Fitzroy fans do still exist!
Yes, a load of factors are in play but at the end of the day, the ultimate point still remains- the Lions are as irrelevant as it comes right now. I hate saying it and don’t want to, but no point in hiding from it

1. Thank you Trent. I did misread the spread sheet of the viewership. Edits have been made to the article to reflect that. Either way, FTA or not, it is still an extremely concerning number.
2. I understand the timeslot argument but when the numbers are as bad as Brisbane’s, I think we can almost discount it because how much of a difference what it have made? Plus, you can’t say the Roos match was in a poor time slot. Saturday twilight and still only 26,000 Brisbane FTA viewers and a crowd of 18,000
3. Yes, the Suns crowd was lower but it’s only by a very small margin, which is yet another concern for the Lions

That’s what I’m saying about winning- you win, people come.
This is why the Lions are going to be struggling for a while. In my opinion, I can’t see them winning for a while and with the current state of the Lions, it’s hard, and scary, to imagine what will happen if things become worse.

Cheers mate, should have outlined it more clearly in the initial piece.

There’s another example of my point.
Brisbane Lions fighting irrelevancy just two weeks into the season
I’m going by the channels listed on the Brisbane Lions website- has only three games as seven under the ‘Host TV Network’.
Every other game was Foxtel.

You’re denying the Blues aren’t young, when they rely on their youth so much and are clearly in a rebuild and bringing in young guys into the club?
Despite opening loss, Carlton shines light on a brighter future
Yep, understand what you are saying man.
Same concept could even be placed on the Eagles from last season- why had them making the grand final before the season started?
Despite opening loss, Carlton shines light on a brighter future
Feels like it’s been a while since that ray of sunshine has been coming from Ikon Park!
Despite opening loss, Carlton shines light on a brighter future
Yep, another good point. Young teams doesn’t always mean in terms of age.
Despite opening loss, Carlton shines light on a brighter future
While I’m bullish on the Blues future, I do think saying they can make the 8 is a bit of a stretch!
Despite opening loss, Carlton shines light on a brighter future
Agree with both of you Samantha and Macca.
Like I mentioned in the piece, the Blues aren’t going to win a lot of games this season. Simply too many good clubs and unfortunately they are in the bottom tier. Growing pains are going to happen but with young kids, it is always important to focus on the positives as much as the negatives. With 2016 being a new era in Carlton football, the early positives should be celebrated, as the eventual negatives should be criticised (to an extent).
Despite opening loss, Carlton shines light on a brighter future
Fair point Macca.
And to add to that, Carlton’s NAB Challenge wasn’t a complete disaster. They showed some positive signs during the pre-season comp.
However, in the eyes of the general public, and myself, I was a tad surprised (in a good way) at how good the Blues looked.
Despite opening loss, Carlton shines light on a brighter future
While I understand what both of you are saying, when you look at the how the kids performed on Thursday- Cripps, Weitering etc, it shows how Carlton have an exciting future,
I think when I say the Blues are a young side, it refers to how much they rely on some of their younger players as opposed to their older guys. And as the year goes on and the kids get more games into them, we will have a greater scope of just how good Carlton’s younger guys are
Despite opening loss, Carlton shines light on a brighter future
I agree man and that is one of the main reasons the Bulls have had issues with their culture this season. The coaching change has a greater impact than some may notice. Miami is another good example of a winning culture I didn’t mention in the piece.
Oh, don’t get me started on Johnny Jones, Ben Simmons and LSU. What a horrible team that was to watch this season, Simmons aside.

That wraps up the coverage here.

While I did get some slight info wrong, which I have now fixed, and take responsibility for, I don’t think it makes the disturbing facts any less disturbing.
The Lions still have major struggles and concerns with crowd and TV numbers right now and that cannot be avoided
