The moment after I was born, my father lifted me into the air like a sacrifice to the gods and proclaimed: "say Collingwood!" It's been downhill from there.

Q3 17 MINS LEFT – GC 12.3 (81) GWS 5.4(34)
You’d think the Giants would a little pumped up at least but no. They go forward halfheartedly but cough it up, Suns chip it around in the back half, then a stream of uncontested marks through the middle before the ball ends up in Boston’s lap 35 out. He goals. GWS should be wearing their orange home strip because they are absolute witches hats today.

HALF TIME
Well it was bad enough for the Giants to get slaughtered by Richmond in Sheedy’s last home game, but to be giving in to the fresh-faced Suns just as meekly is a real shame. Mad Monday might involve a group trip to the psychotherapist if this keeps up, a belting from the Suns would be a confidence-shattering way to end the season.
As for the Suns, Ablett is back in form with 20 touches and three goals. Forget the Son of God, he is a Sun God up here at Metricon. Not a one man show by any means however, with their young superstars in Bennell, Prestia and O’Meara dominating in the middle.

Q2 1 MIN LEFT – GC 11.3 (75) GWS 5.4(34)
Whitfield delivers to Tomlinson who marks on a tight angle about 20m out. Mighty tough kick but the young Giant slides it through.

Gilbee collects the ball from 35m out and puts it through the middle, any hint of a comeback from the Giants has officially been snuffed out. Sheedy deserves better here.

Cameron fights for the ball 15 metres from goal, gathers but gets tackled… no free? It was physically impossible for that tackle to be any lower, he was being held by the ankles! Suns counterattack and cleanly move the ball down the other end, Stanley goals.

Rischitelli gets it from a similar spot and… I’ve jinxed him – he misses this time round.

Boston from the middle delivers cleanly to Rischitelli on an angle forty out. He goals to stop the rot – Suns deadly accurate today.

Q2 14 MINS LEFT – GC 9.1 (55) GWS 4.4(28)
Kennedy tackles Brennan down 45m out on a slight angle and wins a free. Needs to kick this to keep the Giants in it and does so. GWS follow it up with another attacking foray. Big Giles clunks a mark directly in front just inside the forward fifty arc. He goals! The Giants showing some fight!

Q2 17 MINS LEFT – GC 9.1 (55) GWS 2.1(13)
Rischitelli has a crack from the fifty metre arc and gets another. Then Dixon wins the tap out in the centre square, follows up his ruck work by gathering cleanly and storming through the middle to launch the ball home. Getting ugly already for the Giants.

Q2 19 MINS LEFT – GC 7.1 (43) GWS 2.1(13)
Second quarter starts off much like the first, Suns straight forward out of the middle, Ablett gathers and nonchalantly throws it on his boot from forty out and sends it through for his third. Could be a Brownlow-winning performance here today.

QUARTER TIME – GC 6.1 (37) GWS 2.3 (15)
Sloppy effort from GWS there, going to need to do a lot better than that to give Sheedy his fairytale send-off. Ablett channeling his father with two goals playing up forward. Bennell also with a pair.

QUARTER TIME – GC 6.1 (37) GWS 2.4 (16)
Bennell nearly undoes his good work by coughing the ball up to Edwards in GWS’s forward pocket. He tries to snap a goal but it drifts wide. GWS win the ball back from the kick in and press for a last second goal, Tyson tries to bend it around his shoulder on the Quarter time siren but also misses. They needed that, badly.

Q1 4 MINS LEFT – GC 6.1 (37) GWS 2.1(13)
In what could become a familiar sight over the next few years, O’Meara bangs the ball down the wing, Bennell speeds ahead of Davis, collects the ball and slots it home.

Q1 6 MINS LEFT – GC 5.1 (25) GWS 2.1(13)
Ablett playing forward so far, gathers the ball forty out but kicks it out under enormous pressure. GWS cough the ball up in their foray out of defense, Suns launch it right back into Ablett’s safe hands. He coolly goes back and nails the goal.

Q1 10 MINS LEFT – GC 4.1 (25) GWS 2.1(13)
Wilkinson gathers the ball on the wing, Ablett is free but he’s ignored, instead he bombs it into the fifty and Day takes a great overhead grabs, stretching as if he’s trying to put a star on a Christmas tree. Oh no, mark isn’t paid, it’s a free. Regardless he sprays the ball from outside fifty and sneaks it home for a point.

Q1 13 MINS LEFT – GC 4.0 (24) GWS 2.1(13)
GWS get a rare forward fifty entry and force a ball up fifteen metres out from the GWS goal. Free kick for a block to… Jeremy Cameron! He squeezes the goal through to commence his Coleman quest.

Q1 13 MINS LEFT – GC 4.0 (6) GWS 1.1(7)
It’s as fast and free flowing as Niagra Falls at the minute. Gold Coast peppering their forward fifty a few times but it keeps coming back out. The Ablett gets ahold of the footy, snaps over his shoulder and rolls the ball through for a goal.

Q1 16 MINS LEFT – GC 3.0 (6) GWS 1.1(7)
McKenzie drills the ball beautifully onto Bennell’s chest, and he goes back and kicks the goal. Then Harbrow ends up on the end of a chain of Suns handballs in the middle, bursts through and slots another.

Q1 18 MINS LEFT – GC 1.0 (6) GWS 1.1(7)
Cameron marks on an angle forty out… needs a big bag today to take out the Coleman, but misses. Gold Coast transition the ball quickly to the other end for a ball up in their attacking forward fifty.

Well, well, well. GWS win the next centre clearance and get an immediate reply from through Summner streaming towards goal from fifty out. Might have ourselves a shootout here.

And we’re underway, Gary Ablett wins a free out the middle, kicks wide and Prestia nails a goal in the opening fifteen seconds. Ominous.

Hello and welcome to the Roar’s coverage of Gold Coast vs GWS. There’s been a late change – GWS replacing Zachary Williams with Nicholas Haynes. The subs are Hunt for the Suns and Jaksch for the Giants. Kevin Sheedy’s final game as a coach will commence in just a few minutes.

I thought it was an odd slogan, considering there’s a Giants side that’s just joined the comp (and could also be said to be “sleeping”). No arguing with the sentiment though, Port are definitely one to watch in the coming years.

Has the sleeping Power Giant woken?

If you continue the sentence you’ve quoted it goes on to say “Port, with its dismal Melbourne record”. One of the key points here is home ground advantage – Port have been sensational this year at home, particularly when they dismantled Sydney and the Pies in successive weeks.

As you say, they are a young side with nothing to lose, but the flipside of that is they may feel they’ve already exceeded their own internal expectations for the year and are probably happy with just making the finals. They had a pretty soft draw having finished so low last year, and are still probably a couple of years away from being capable of doing damage come finals time. I love the way they play though so hopefully they surprise a few teams this year.

Bombers out means Pies, Tigers should lose

You’re spot on about Sydney at ANZ being Collingwood’s preferred opponent, but keep in mind the top four isn’t set in stone yet either. Hawthorn still has to beat Sydney to secure top spot, and the other results have to fall the way people are expecting as well.
