I barrack for Collingwood. To quote my daughter being a Collingwood supporter is a life long commitment and it's not for the faint hearted. If you're not up to that kind of commitment, if you're a bit soft or if you're a bit of a turncoat, then it's probably best that you support someone else. I therefore come with a bias, but hope I am fairly pragmatic with it.

Good night Tempo. It has been nice talking to you. You must be a bear.

Sad but true - Reality is Afghanistan should lose Test status for women's team ban but ICC slow to act yet again

I am surprised you consider stoning of women and honour killings and the ongoing repression of the Tamils childs play. I think you are being a bit disingenuous. I don’t think I made any statement as to whether Afghanistan actually had a women’s team or not, only that they banned them.

Sad but true - Reality is Afghanistan should lose Test status for women's team ban but ICC slow to act yet again

I was alluding to countries such as Pakistan and Sri Lanka that have bad human rights records. In Pakistans case, support for terrorists as well. You may argue that that are not as bad as Afghanistan, but are still an issue. As for my hypothetical which was actually a question, I would suggest that the Taliban were actually doing all these things prior to banning the women’s cricket team. We were happy to play against the men up until the women were banned from playing cricket. We would have continued to play against the men if the women were still able to play, even with the Taliban continuing their repressive activities.

So the rule of thumb on what we condone now is dependent on a country having a women’s cricket team. If the Taliban allowed a women’s cricket team to play then are we then willing to condone everything else they do by allowing them to play? I think the short answer would be yes. After all we do it all the time.

They need some stroking from time to time.

Ensuring your off-season footy code war article offends as many fans as possible

Nicely balanced and unbiased article while subtly slagging the AFL, Victoria, Tasmania, South Australian, Western Australia and possibly the Northern Territory and bringing out a smattering of sycophants.

There is a lot of what I would consider to be justifiable criticism of Qatar coming from a lot of different areas. However there are a lot of “Universal Soldiers”, from players to commentators, lining up to take the (dirty) money or just enjoy the lavish spectacle while bemoaning the state of play. Me, I am boycotting the whole thing in protest.

Craig Foster is about to annoy millions with his World Cup commentary

I never understood why Gold Coast drafted him. For some reason Rankine always struck me as someone who might go home at the first opportunity. There have certainly been others who have come to Queensland to play who I thought would go home and a lot did, but he really stood out for me as one who would go.

Why Crows' move for Rankine is a no-brainer

To get a result have place kicks from the 50 metre line blindfolded and in the nude (boots excepted). A lost skill, plus some mystery and some spice.

Let them play: It's time for AFL to introduce extra time

One of the things that annoys me in sports commentary is the over use of people’s names. When the discussion or commentary is clearly about a specific person, that person’s name is continually used at the beginning or end of a sentence. If 3 commentators are talking they will all do it. Maybe the commentators have short memories and need to be constantly reminded who they are talking about.
I remember watching an ABC breakfast news report about Aung San Suu Kyi and the commentator (Michael Rowland I think) must have used the name 20 times in the report. Maybe he was showing off that he could pronounce the name. Everybody knew who the report was about and I always wondered why the name had to be said so often.

‘Curse of verse’ spreading in sporting circles - English language versus vulgarians at the gate

I would like the refs to be given an opportunity to make comment after a game. Something along the lines of “Ricky Stuart made some bad coaching decisions today” or “player X had real butter fingers today” or “why was player Y allowed to stay on the park when they were clearly a bit loopy” or “player Z played poorly today and made some bad decisions that cost their side the game”.
Should make for interesting reading to hear what the refs actually think after a game as they are right in the middle of it all. The Roar should offer the refs a column of their own.

'Tomorrow I'll get an apology': Stuart angered by controversial call as Dragons edge out Raiders

A bad non call can also affect a teams ladder position at the end of the year. I know there are lots of them that occur and a certain balance is achieved in the universe.
Have a look at the difference in what the ladder might have been and how the final series might have played out if Zac Bailey had been given a free against Geelong last year and kicked a goal.

Nice attack on Islam people. I am sure the AFL are going to come down hard on a Muslim women playing in the AFLW. Inclusivity is only for those that meet a certain criteria.

With all we have gone through over the last 2 years did Craig Tiley really think he could get away with the medical exemption thing and not have Djokovic escape heavy scrutiny. Some of the others who got in and have now either been sent home or left, maybe, but certainly not young Novak. Regardless of the rights or wrongs of the situation it was always going to get nasty.
I have a certain amount of sympathy for Djokovic. He was given a path to follow by TA and seems to have gone down that path. Even though he appears to have deviated from the path a bit and has not been as truthful as he should have been, he still followed TA’s lead. Will TA have to pay the piper as well.

'Shameful': Supporters hit out at Djokovic treatment as he heads back to lockdown

If you put all the border and covid stuff to one side I think the AO will be a better event with him in it. To some extent the tennis fan suffers regardless of what happens. If he stays people get to enjoy his tennis abilities, but may have to look on with a level of disdain that impacts their enjoyment. If he is kicked out then something will be missing from the event, but we may feel justice has been served.
Is there some middle ground where Djokovic gets his comeuppance, but can still play and provide a level of enjoyment for tennis fans that under normal circumstances would be the case. Maybe our blood lust is too strong on this one.

D-Day for Novak Djokovic as immigration minister set to rule on his visa

An area that I don’t think gets much air is the role played by umpires/referees who don’t put a stop when things get a bit out of hand. I have watched a lot of sport both elite and at kids level. Often illegal activities are just let go and it just gets worse from there. By way of example I was at my granddaughters away AFL game umpired by a home team umpire. The umpire was doing a fair job, but let a lot of head stuff go. One home team girl decided it was ok to try and pull the heads off the opposition players. The umpire did nothing. The coaches did nothing. It took the girls parents to put a stop to it. Fortunately nobody got really hurt, but if it continued somebody would have.

The seeds of brain injuries are often sown at the junior level.

Is the AFLW reckless to hit the accelerator while concussion concerns hang over players' heads?

Craig Tiley was the catalyst for this whole mess. His manipulation of the medical exemptions process is a slap in the face to everyone who have been stuck not being able to get home or to visit family. He should be the one copping all the boos every time he shows his face at the tennis.

BREAKING: Novak Djokovic wins battle to stay in Australia

Expert commentators who don’t know the rules. Surprise surprise.

Sharp-eyed ref pings Brisbane Roar for rarely seen but hilariously obvious rule

Maybe football in Australia is not going to be what you all want it to be. Sometimes a product regardless of promotion and publicity just doesn’t cut it big time in some markets. Sure you can quote the crowd figures at the recent Matilda’s game, but how many of the people who attended will actually go to a women’s game weekly. The loud and proud will be very vocal and noisy, but does this just hide the reality that there just aren’t that many of you out there. The game certainly deserves more. Not completely convinced it will happen.

I often see stats referred to, that the game has great participation rates amongst kids. I would suggest, based on my limited experience with my kids, that the vast majority of those kids just aren’t interested in football beyond the team they are playing with. Huge untapped market.

Why aren’t people turning up to the A-League Men?

Tony I think sometimes journalists shoot from the hip with an AK47 and hope to hit the target without any concerns for who else will get hit. Paine’s wife and the woman he sent the picture too are now going to take a hit. The women who received the photo now has a big
“public interest” target on her back. Other commenters on this thread think this is ok. As this women seems to be headed for court I would have thought the journalist could have waited to see if she wanted to take Paine’s actions into the public arena. I thought it was unreasonable for the journalist to make that call. What Paine did doesn’t need any more comment from me.

'Extremely concerned': Paine takes 'mental health break' putting him OUT of first Test with career in doubt

Just saw something, in another comment thread, about a new investigation to look at the old investigation. Not sure how true that is.

Regardless of what you think of Paine, he deserves some mercy

Agree. Probably still in the first innings (excuse the pun) with this at the moment.

Regardless of what you think of Paine, he deserves some mercy

I am not sure, but I have not seen any any first hand reports. Most of the things I have seen have just alluded to her raising the issue at the time and CA had addressed that (maybe not very well). I have also seen some report that she has stated that she did not make it public. I stand to be corrected,

Regardless of what you think of Paine, he deserves some mercy

Many people seem to live in the “Palace of the Perfect”. What ever you think of Paine’s action’s there is basically only one person (outside of his family) who can pass judgement on what he did. That is the woman who he sent the photo too. I am do not know what her position is, but she doesn’t seem to have made it a public issue. Someone else decided that. If it is not an ongoing problem for her then it is surely not something I need to be getting upset about. Until she passes judgement then the rest of us should just go back to the Palace.

Regardless of what you think of Paine, he deserves some mercy

I think the next captain should be selected on looks and eloquence alone. Batting or bowling ability should be a secondary consideration. Years ago I followed a football team in the VFA who had a full forward we all thought was hopeless, but he certainly looked good out on the field. We all thought we were the best team because we had the best looking player in the competition. That’s what the test team needs to do. Have the best looking captain in world cricket. Who cares whether we win or lose.

Australia needs a captain who's handsome (but not too handsome): Step forward, Watto
