I barrack for Collingwood. To quote my daughter being a Collingwood supporter is a life long commitment and it's not for the faint hearted. If you're not up to that kind of commitment, if you're a bit soft or if you're a bit of a turncoat, then it's probably best that you support someone else. I therefore come with a bias, but hope I am fairly pragmatic with it.

The human race never fails to disappoint. Sending photos of your penis to someone seems like the epitome of stupid. Then there is the pile on when it becomes public. This is where the human race really distinguishes itself as a low form of life. The faceless just waiting in the wings to destroy. Make a mistake or just carry out an ill judged act then you are to be doomed forever by the perfect. Acknowledgment of stupid is not allowed. You must pay the piper. I just get very cynical some days.

Tim Paine is not the man we thought he was. Is anyone?

Maybe this was GC’s plan all along. Getting rid of a player they didn’t really want without appearing to actually get rid of a player they did not really want.

Suns' staggering list management own goal sees star poached by Kangaroos

Were Australia the better side or did the coin toss decide the final? There seem to be some interesting discussion on how the side doing the chasing was basically always winning. Quite often cricket games are decided on the coin toss.

Thanks for the suggestion Lionheart.

Dear AFL and NRL fans: Will we be seeing you at the A-Leagues this season?

RB when I was at school in Melbourne in the 60s most teams had an ethnic alliance. So I had some interest through the kids who I went to school with, depending who were my mates at the time. We had quite a diverse group. As things changed those clubs disappeared as did their history as you suggest. I am sure it is out there somewhere.

Dear AFL and NRL fans: Will we be seeing you at the A-Leagues this season?

Watched a movie recently called the Bromley Boys based on a book by Dave Roberts. It struck me that it was what being a football fan was all about. Dave has been following Bromley for years. In Australia this would be difficult as teams seem to come and go in the blink of an eye. Probably any teams that I might have had any interest in have long gone. I am not really a football fan as such, but would like to have some team that I could be interested in.

Dear AFL and NRL fans: Will we be seeing you at the A-Leagues this season?

My son played AFL and Rugby League when he was young. Concussion was basically an invisible injury at that level. Kids with physical injuries weren’t sent back out to play. As a parent I understood the risks and that injuries would occur. My son didn’t and peer pressure made it difficult even with a physical injury. He thought he was invincible. The coaches and officials certainly didn’t if an injury wasn’t staring them in the face. They sent kids with concussions back out to play and who knows what the consequences of that have been. I had to step in and tell the coach that my son was not to be sent back out if he got a head knock. If he broke his leg I certainly would not have had to intercede.

By the way the worst concussion one of my children got was my daughter. She was a competitive ice skater. Ice is not very forgiving when you hit your head on it. She had to stay away from the ice for a number of weeks until she was given a clearance. This wouldn’t have happened on the football field.

I think some of you are missing the point of the article. Parents know the risks. Kids don’t think about them. What I expected was that coaches and officials knew when to address the consequences once they occurred. Unfortunately they don’t or didn’t when my son was playing.

Community footy needs to protect non-elite footballers from concussion

I agree with you.

How is the NRL still getting Mad Monday so wrong?

Filming the crime is not the issue. It is what these low-lifes did after they filmed it. They could have given it to the the police, the NRL or the Melbourne Storm to deal with. They were not interested in addressing the crime. They were only interested in causing as much public mischief as possible.

How is the NRL still getting Mad Monday so wrong?

Agree. An interesting conundrum.

Back to Brisbane after 24 years, and the grand final that still causes arguments to rage

I watched both grand finals from a neutral perspective. My view is the Broncos were a far superior team to the 2 that played in the ARL grand final. They would have beaten either of them in the same way they beat Cronulla. I would therefore view the Broncos as the premier team of that year.

Thom, you write good articles on the Roar. You should explore this aspect of the game and do an article. Not to criticise umpires, but to high-light the impact of inconsistencies on the game. I think umpires do a pretty good job over all. However it is these sort of things, such as the examples you have stated, that I find very frustrating when watching a game.

UNBELIEVABLE! Bulldogs snatch one-point win in semi-final for the ages!

I think it is the non calls at a critical stages at the end of a game that are an issue. I think this is where the umpires get caught up in the moment and become inconsistent. I know it also happens during the game, but this is where their non-decision can decide a game as it is hard to recover from it. A free should have probably been paid but wasn’t and this has given an advantage to the offending side that they should not have gotten.

Examples of this in the last couple of minutes of a game are: 2017 AFLW Grand Final – holding the ball, 2018 AFLM Grand Final – blocking, 2019 Semi Final Lions vs GWS – throwing the ball, early 2021 Geelong vs Lions – holding the ball and last night holding the ball against the Bulldogs. Had any of these been called then the result could well have been different. I am sure there are lots more examples and it doesn’t mean the result would have been different, but they all had a critical impact on the game and potentially changed the outcome. I would also point out that it is, in reality, not a free kick if the umpire doesn’t call it and it is only my subjective opinion that it should have been called.

You mentioned that there is no way to prove that Mitchell is an endemically dirty player. I would say history is a way to prove this. I don’t watch a lot of games, but when I have seen him play he has always crossed the line (a very subjective thing I realise) where he gets a bit nasty as opposed to being hard and aggressive. In one game I watched when he was at the Roosters, Sam Burgess had to sort him out because the refs wouldn’t. Having said that he is joy to watch when in full flight.

I would also make a comment on the sycophantic use of his first name as opposed to his last name. Everyone else gets referred to by their last name, but he seems to have been elevated to a higher plane in the rugby league world.

Why the focus on Latrell misses the real issue in a failing system

I quite like the idea. I find it a bit incongruous that a game that is meant to be played inside a boundary (a rectangle in this instance) rewards a team for deliberately putting the ball outside the boundary or gives you a chance to get it back. I understand it is part of the games strategy and that there are other rules in play.
I also think it’s good to throw these ideas out there regardless of their validity. It gives the over-reactors something to react to. That was probably Wayne’s real objective with this idea.

For our next trick ... NRL considers radical kicking rule which could be trialled in round 25

Pom, you’re last sentence is interesting. “Their private schools” is probably how a lot of people view rugby union.

Defusing the Australian code war

I sometimes think that a season at the Storm is just a pre-season for next year or the year after. If they win the premiership then they have had a really good pre-season. If they are close then they have had a good pre-season. They rarely have bad pre-seasons. It a bit like playing chess or snooker really well.

The secret to Storm’s success

I think Ray Warren is overrated, but that is more a personal view. I think Warren Boland is streets ahead of anyone else on the list. He played at the highest level and therefore has the background to be a both a caller and a commentator ( I think there is a distinction). Not everyone on the list is both. He has a calm and interesting voice which doesn’t grate, unlike some on the list. I don’t think a lot of people have actually been exposed to him to see how good he really is.

Sterlo says 'freeze it there'. So where does he rank in rugby league's top 20 commentators list?

I barrack for Collingwood so basically I dislike all of you and enjoy being disliked by all of you. I have especially disliked Carlton for years, but to my dismay this dislike has waned of late. Maybe I have mellowed as I have aged or maybe Carlton seem to have been crap for a long time and I feel sorry for them. I do have to constantly remind myself however that it is Carlton and there is no good reason to give them any sort of love and I can return them to the bottom of my 17 most disliked clubs.

The 2021 AFL season is destroying my belief system

I followed the Olympics on “the Roar”. I was able to keep up to date on what was going on right here. Channel 7 and the other media outlets were a bit hard to follow at times. So well done to all the people who contributed and thank you.

'One of our best ever': Australia’s outstanding athletics performance in Tokyo

I think you are both missing the point. When I said athletic talent I was using it more generically and just not talking about people who run fast. It is about making the most of the population you have available to you and nurturing it from a young age. Australia has a lot of choice for young people and what I am suggesting is that football is not always getting the people who have the most potential and would make good footballers because they are choosing other sports.

Analysis: Signs of promising spark despite absence of a glittering finish to Matildas' campaign

I often wonder whether the best footballers, with a few exceptions, in Australia don’t actually play football. When you see the athletic talent that is playing different sports and is also visible at these Olympics how can the Matildas ever really compete until they can harness the best talent. Maybe future success will breed success.

Analysis: Signs of promising spark despite absence of a glittering finish to Matildas' campaign

I don’t know enough about the rules to say how correct it was. I watched bits of a few games and every time there was a corner or penalty near the goals there was heavy blocking going on and I never saw a penalty called. Maybe they were called in other games I didn’t see. One of the problems with refereeing is consistency. I would suggest that if we looked at this referee and other referee’s games through out the tournament there would have seen similar blocking not called. Some days refs are pedantic and some days they are not. You just have to play the ref.

Australian fans explode after Kerr stunner ruled out, while tactics guru explains why

I often wonder when situations like this arise what happens first. Does a poor physical effort cause a mental issue or does a mental issue cause a poor physical effort. Biles was expected to be perfect but her physical effort was not. Did this accentuate her mental issues. If she had been perfect would she have been able to deal with any mental issues or would they have still arisen. Maybe she was her own worst enemy. Expectations can be a cruel master.
