Great idea – if not the full national team then whoever is available – a number of fringe Socceroos and A-League players would surely love the experience.

By the way just read this
http://www.foxsports.com.au/other-sports/foxsports-15yr-anniversary/we-bring-you-a-list-of-the-15-most-watched-matched-ever-broadcast-on-fox-sports/story-fn8b1swq-1226033407437

Socceroos still have top two spots on Pay TV – 5 of the top 15 all time Pay TV matches involve Socceroos.

No AFL games in the top 15.

Send the Socceroos to the Copa America

Yes, doing it right is the important bit.
Just reacting for reacting sake is not wise.

The good thing about the break is the time that the FFA have to put measures in place and hopefully they will do some good.

There is another fan forum being run in Sydney this week and the FFA has surveyed a lot of football fans and the football family.

They have also had meetings with the owners and major stakeholders so they are listening for ideas.
They have also commited for funding for advertising and marketing and connecting with the greater football community.

But in the end its up to the fans – if you want an A-League, then you have to support it.

A-League: What we've learned this season

Only 5 months to kick off now.

A-League: What we've learned this season

Nice post Con. Very Upbeat.

Do you have shares in a Japanese Nuclear Energy company too?

A-League: What we've learned this season

Another disappointing round for the AFL.as interest in AFL drops. 2011 round 2 avge attendance of 33,212 is 20% lower than round 2 attendances for last season.

Most telling is the first Swans home game at ANZ which drew only 28K – the first time that an AFL fixture at ANZ has drawn less than 30K.

Sydney needs a second AFL team?

I heard the AFL were so concerned about the low attendance at the Swans game that they were giving away Swans tickets for free at Sydney Mcdonalds outlets, on top of all the free tickets they usually give away to AusKickers and their families..

Swans members who paid full price weren’t very happy either when they found out!

Don’t get caught up in the AFL hype.
You probably live in Melbourne and all they report is bad things about the other sports and good things about AFL.

NRL had a record opening to the season – attendances, ratings, memberships. Its in a very strong position and about to re-structure with a commission and will get even bigger.

The AFL participation rates are only going up because they changed the definition of “AFL participation”.
If an AFL salesman visits your school and lets you have a kick of a Sherrin, they count the whole school as “AusKick participants” – pathetic really.

AFL is having the worst opening to a season in years, with worse to come. GWS will fail.

The only thing in AFL’s favour is that they have money in the bank.

NRL needs to hit back hard at AFL expansion

“I don’t know of any AFL supporters who regularly post on Roar, who take pleasure in the A-League’s failures”

This is the sort of lies we have to put up with from you AFL supporters and now our comments are being censored like communist Russia or Nazi Germany.

AFL will stop at nothing till they take over the world – so it must be disappointing for you when AFL interest starts to fall.

Demetriou calls the kettle black

Yep, I knew you would be the first to defend the honour of AFL Pip.

I read ItsCalledFootball’s comment and though I would add my own because I have been treated the same.

I hope you AFL people have a great time with your heads buried in the sand patting each other on the behinds.

Look forward to posting more about falling AFL crowds and ratings next week.

I read Michael Di Fabrizio’s article on “No Need to worry over Round One AFL crowds” and would like to make a comment because its obviously in response to this article.

However the moderators are preventing me from making any comments.

I am not sure if this is deliberate or not, but if it is, then it truly does show that there is plenty for the AFL to worry about – in fact they are so concerned, they need to censor any comments about falling crowds.

Demetriou calls the kettle black

Thanks Roger.

I think its another drawn game.

Demetriou calls the kettle black

Bondy,
I don’t lose any sleep over whether people are comfortable with calling it football or soccer.

The moderators edit articles and change soccer to football.

If I’m talking to real football people I’ll call it football,
if I’m talking to others I might call it soccer – not going to lose any sleep over it.

Demetriou calls the kettle black

Sorry fellas,
I am so ashamed of myself for ever saying anthing bad about AFL.
I won’t do it again.

From now on I will behave like AFL players.

Demetriou calls the kettle black

Yes Tommy, some great football happeneing every week around the world.

Spain did win, but they looked a little rusty against the Czechs, but I’m sure they will be at their peak to defend their European title.

Funny how the English press gave the team and the manager a bagging after a 2-0 win.

And the Germans were booed off after a 4-0 win.
Gees I hope they don’t take it out on us tomorrow.

Talking points from the weekend's big matches

Amazing how people are such a critic of a sport because they have been trained to be by the AFL, and yet his own daughter plays the sport.

Do you keep reminding her about the falling crowds and how much money they lose every time she puts her boots on.

Hey, the FFA are responsible for your daughter playing soccer, do something about it!

Demetriou calls the kettle black

That’s a worry, because half the “members” are from Victoria.

Then half of the rest don’t turn up to games, so you are looking at a crowd of about 5K for the first Suns game.

Demetriou calls the kettle black

I didn’t say that the AFL were corrupt.

I’m just saying nobody outside of AFL believes a word Demetriou says or trusts him.

The AFL have their problems too and things aren’t as rosy as the AFL makes out – especially when people have to start defending the drop in opening round AFL attendances.

Demetriou calls the kettle black

No I don’t live in Melbourne any more Redb and I do miss some things about it.

But I’ve moved on.

Demetriou calls the kettle black

OK I’ll try and believe you.

But then why did he wait 4 months to say it and is it just a coincidence that it is the start of the AFL season and the poor attendances and ratings are worrying him?

Demetriou calls the kettle black

What claims exactly are baseless – please elaborate to the insular cult.

Demetriou calls the kettle black

Well why not wookie,
its the world’s governing body of Aussie Rules and Melbourne is the AFL capital of the world.

Demetriou calls the kettle black

Please provide the source of your figures.

The A-League is only shown on Pay TV.

The A-League grand final shoot out had an audience of over 400K which made it one of the top pay TV sport programs.

The A-League GF was also shown live around the world to between 30 to 50 million viewers.

Demetriou calls the kettle black

If you knew anything about football you would realise Tim Cahill is injured, but the rest of the Asian Cup final side are playing.

Should be a great game banana – its a sell out 65K crowd.

Not as many empty seats as there were at the MCG and Etihad over the weekend.

Demetriou calls the kettle black

No need to start attacking soccer again because the AFL has some bad figures.

Attacking the A-League won’t get you anywhere.

The A-League actually just finished another record year:

2010/11: A-League’s record season

Most football clubs in the world don’t make a profit – Manchester United lost 330 million pounds last season.

But soccer in this country isn’t just the A-League, its the most played sport in the country with hundreds of thousands of junior grassroots players and thousands of competitions played every weekend.

Then there’s all the national teams, the Socceroos, Olyroos, Young Socceroos, U17s, U19s, U20s, Matildas, Westfield Women’s league, Hyundai Youth League.

Australia plays Germany in a friendly this week in front of a sold out crowd with millions expected to tune in right around the world.

How is soccer in Australia going to die?

Falling AFL crowds don’t mean AFL is going to die either.

But just look at the attendance figures and TV ratings for round 1 of the 2011 AFL season and make up your own mind about where AFL is heading.

Sure its only one round, but the AFL commissioners would be concerned – no doubt, especially when they are negotiating a big media deal.

Demetriou calls the kettle black

This AFL round 1 attendance figure gets bigger every time you mention it.

By tomorrow morning it will be another AFL record opening round attendance, as will be reported on the front page of tomorrow’s Herald Sun. 🙂
