“McKenna scoffed at the notion Hunt was playing purely for promotional purposes”
McKenna knows he’s on thin ice and which hand is feeding him.

He wasn’t selected for his AFL coaching ability either – just on how many times he says yes to Demetriou and the AFL marketing department, who are the real selectors of the Suns team every week.

Is Karmichael Hunt the worst player in AFL?

Just how many AFL promotions do you want?

The game is turning into an AFL marketing project.

Let have a “What Can We Do to Get the Crowds and Revenues Up Round” next hosted by Eddie Maguire.

AFL needs an All Star weekend

I think the Mariners have done the right thing and no one really takes any notice of the Daily Rugby League Telegraph anyway.,

From an A-League perspective I’m glad Mustafa is staying for at least another year. He’s got a good attitude so he will take it as he should and continue to focus on developing his career in Australia.

Another year in the A-League would do him well instead of sitting on cold hard German steel benches in the northern winter.

Football media needs to stand up over Musty transfer fiasco

Not too hard to pick that one Mike – no A-League relegation for a time yet. Buy the franchise and you are very safe to stay in the top flight.

Some of the world’s biggest sporting competitions like US baseball, F1 and NFL don’t have relegation and promotion.

On the A-League model and in current format there aren’t too many clubs who can afford to be in the A-League.
Lets just concentrate on getting them right first, shall we.

Relegation from A-League won't happen any time soon

Well done firebirds and Queensland and Brisbane sport.
SoO champs, A-League champs and now national netball champs – really is the best sporting state in Australia.

Tom, its not that hard to outrate the Swans on TV these days – they usually come last in the ratings anyway.

Queensland Firebirds crowned ANZ Champions

Brett Emerton said that if Blackburn go down he will go down under to the A-League.

If so, SFC are keen to sign him as the 2nd marquee player and Brett prefers coming back to Syd knee.

Who will fall from the EPL?

I think the FFA is doing OK.

Just the government getting tight with their money – that’s all.

FFA needs to lift its game yet again

Soccer does pretty well in the ratings – don’t you worry about that.

AFL's TV deal choking NRL, Socceroos

The same would apply to AFL fans.

I would even argue that AFL fans are more likely than NRL fans, to watch more than one game of AFL in a week.

They also get counted more than once in the membership figures too, when you can buy 3 match tickets and be counted as “AFL Club members”.

Then MyLeftFoot is wrong and the fool, not me.

He is the one bragging about the 500M/5 year deal with Foxtel.

But stop trying to divert the argument by attacking me.

AFL is shown exclusively on Pay TV as well, so no excuses for AFL not being in the Fox Sports top 15 list.

Fifteen years of Fox Sports: Football on top

That’s not true Fool [love calling you that :)].

The AFL shows 4 games a week live and exclusive on Fox Sports.
That’s why they pay them $100M a year.

AFL doesn’t make either the Pay TV top 15 or FTA top 10 list as the most watched sport.

Thanks Tristan,
that does make more sense.

Very well written post Brendon.

Apologies, but I am scratching my head as to what this has to do with the topic I raised, or if it is in relpy to any other posts on here.

Can you please elaborate.

I don’t think the Swans were too happy with 28,101 for their opening game of the season.

Its their lowest ever and they gave away a lot of free tickets too.

No.

This time the magistrate raised his voice and said it a bit louder in case he didn’t hear it last time.

Steve,
it will be interesting to see how the negotiations for the AFL TV rights pan out now, after so much hype form the AFL and so little delivery from the expanded competition.

Attendances and ratings are down noticeably on previous seasons and must be worrying to the AFL.

True db Swannie,
NRL is showing strong growth in TV ratings, both FTA and Pay TV.

But like AFL, Rugby League has limited appeal as an international sport and no Rugby League internationals made the list. Realistically only 2 or 3 countriess are competitive.

Agree though that international football is more popular on Australian Pay TV and the A-League is outrated by the other sports on Australian Pay TV, except for the grand final.

However, as I mention previously in one of my other articles, the A-League is watched in over 100 countries around the world – mainly pay TV, and watched by an audience estimated to be between 30 and 50 million viewers.

Funnily enough, the A-League is one of the most popular football leagues around the world watched in betting shops.

And here is the Roy Morgan Research Top 10 most watched sports programs on Australian FTA:

1. 2005 Melbourne Cup 10.5 Million viewers
2. 2006 Australian Open Men’s Final 10M
3. Commonwealth Games 2006 — Opening Ceremony 9M
4. Soccer World Cup Qualifier — 2nd Game (Nov. 2005) Australia v Uruguay 8.5M
5. Commonwealth Games 2006 — Closing Ceremony 8.5M
6. Cricket One Day International — Australia vs. South Africa (Jan. 2006) 7.3M
7. 2006 Soccer World Cup — Australia vs. Japan (Jun. 2006) 7.1M
8. Cricket: Test — Australia vs. West Indies (Dec. 2005) 7M
9. 2006 Australian Open Women’s Final 5M
10. 2006 Fosters Australian Grand Prix 4.9M

In comparison to FTA TV the Socceroos also hold the record for the most watched FTA football programs according to Morgan research.

And this was at 2am in the morning.

So if the interest is there, football, especially the Socceroos, seems to outrate everything else.

Yes Foxtel subs may have dropped off a little, however, the NRL seems to be doing well with two matches this season making the top six and record numbers for NRL games on Foxtel.

Interesting period in the NSL’s development, maybe similar to what we have in the A-League at the moment.
Crowds started tapering off and owners were worried about losing money.

The NSL took some radical steps at that time to try and improve things, but they didn’t work in the end.

I wonder what the FFA are going to do.

Will it be like the old NSL or will things improve and steadily grow to profitability and further expansion, like the MLS and the J-League?

Again, we have some wealthy Australians supporting the A-League, but they are more business hardened and I think more in tune with making money than philanthropy.

This will be a very interesting period in Australian football and Aussie sport in general to see how the FFA and the A-League are going to respond.

If the A-League does fold, will there be a third attempt at a national football competition in future?

A brief history of the NSL (Part II)

The speed of the growth in the first 3 years was on the back of a magnificent World Cup campaign that captured the imagination of Australian sports fans.

The failure of the Socceroos in 2010 and the failure of the ill fated WC bid has set back the A-League a little.

Lets not put all the blame on the FFA.
They do actually do some good things too – like getting us to the WC finals in the first place.

And we have 2 teams in WC finals this year too – the Matildas and the U20s.

Also, this summer we have had
– wettest summer on record in Queensland, floods and cyclones, games washed out or rained in
– one of the wettest summers in NSW and Victoria, floods and washed out games
– failed WC bid and finances drained

Given the atrocious weather this season where 85% of all games were rained on and also the FFA’s attention focused on the WC bids, I thnk the A-League did exceptionally well to only be a few hundred down on last year.

The A-League aggregate figures were a record with nearly 1.6 million fans watching an A-League game.

I think, under the circumstances, that the FFA have done a reasonable job and I am confident that things will continue to improve next season.

A-League: What we've learned this season

Israel Folau didn’t even get a possession in the warm up game between GWS and the Swans reserves.

Lots of rumours and articles in the papers about Folau not being happy and wanting out.
His manager is in discussions with GWS to see if he can get out of his contract.

4 NRL clubs are interested in signing him for next season if he is released.

And the Socceroos are still the top rating sports team on FTA

More worrying was the anger in his face – does he hate the world so much, the one that made him rich and famous?
