Harry, that may well be the most insightful piece of rugby writing I’ve had the pleasure of reading.
Thanks.

Joe Schmidt's search for a 'cold-hearted bastard' - and the issue he'll lose most sleep over

That photo of Carter and Ben. The caption says they “struggled in” the #10 jersey. Looks like they’re struggling to get out of them in that pic.
Also, pedant that I am…..
“….World Cup without an experienced voice at fly-half to compliment emerging talents Carter Gordon and Ben Donaldson ….
That would be “complement”, add to, improve, go with.
A compliment is certainly not what Nella gave Gordon.
🙂

'An experienced 10 would have helped': Wallabies open up on on failed World Cup they'll have to 'live with'

Sub editor’s note.
Headline should be “home in”, not “hone”

'Mature, clinical and getting better every time': All Blacks time run perfectly as they hone in on fourth title

Fines-Leleiwasa made a huge difference for the Force. Challenged tiring defence around the breakdown and created space.
I thought Pryor was poor. Squandered possession a couple of times with sloppy skills and gave away a couple of penalties. Both momentum killers.
That said, I can see why Pryor starts. (Usually solid when things are tight early.) Then Fines-Leleiwasa brings the up tempo style when opposition tires.

'Got a tap on the shoulder': Force veteran comes out of retirement to launch Cron's Super coaching career with a win

I was a bit suss on that grounding, too. Exciting Test. Heartbreak.

The Wrap on Friday: Call it all the time or not at all - crazy, ridiculous moment we should have seen coming

Good reading, Geoff. Many salient points and balanced opinion.
Your understanding of the nuance and feel for the game (and the ref’s complete lack of either) is perfectly stated when he had to ask Jake Gordon three times if he was half-back.

The Wrap on Friday: Call it all the time or not at all - crazy, ridiculous moment we should have seen coming

A Cane not able, indeed.

Hooper is brave and elite, and changing a captain is momentous, but it's a risk worth taking

My thoughts on Farrell were formed from the 2013 Lions tour game against the Reds when he walked through a ruck and nearly ripped Ben Lucas’s ear off with his ‘clumsy feet’.
He may still be all the good things supporters say, but that was no accident and speaks volumes to character.

Coach’s Corner special: what will England bring to the party in July?

Nice list, some quality names in there.
Surprised there was no mention of George Smith.

'Heartache after heartache': The 10 rival players All Black fans feared the most

REACTION: 'They wanted it more'- Tremendous Tahs hold off Crusaders for famous win

Warren-Vosayaco was busy all night. Made a couple of huge tackles in the red zone late. But for effort I’m all in for Charlie Gamble. Hits hard, pilfers, and has a bit of crazy about him, like Geoff Robinson from the Canterbury Bulldogs of years past (perhaps not that crazy).
Love the mo, the hair, the mentality, the power and the motor.
Edmed at 10 is also a good one, and clearly passionate, as the post-game chat with MT showed.
Elsewhere, Cody Taylor must be the least gracious losing captain I’ve heard in a while.

REACTION: 'They wanted it more'- Tremendous Tahs hold off Crusaders for famous win

My reference to the “higher standard” a national captain is held to wasn’t a reference to whether he should be held to a different standard under the laws of the game …. all players are held to the same standard.
But no doubt most of us here have played a team sport and understand that the captain sets the standard for conduct.
And as national captain this is even more important.
My point was about leadership, not agendas.
And given the prevalence of cards and citing for head contact, I was just musing whether the Hooper incident may attract attention.
I’ll try and be clearer for you next time.

Tahs Gamble with Hooper as fast start blitzes Force in Perth

Lots more purpose to how the Tahs go about their business this year.
Force still missing a good 12 and 13. And a bit short in the front row, props wise.

Im not here to debate whether lots of off-the-ball stuff gets missed. I only brought up the Hooper incident bcoz as the Wallabies captain he should be held to a higher standard and at the same time as he’s being praised for a great game by Nick McArdle, the video shows an incident for which players have previously been cited.

Godwin 100 games.
Given the way technology is all over the game, I’ll be interested to see if anything is made of an incident involving Hooper.
In the montage after he spoke to the Stan crew as MoM one play involved him making a dominant tackle on a Force player and then seeming to smack him in the head a couple of times with an open hand.

Hi Piru
Indeed.
If we all knew another’s intent we’d avoid lots of unnecessary disagreements in life. Then again, other times there’d be more.
🙂
Lots of times we don’t even really know our own intent, so who’s a ref to decide, especially in a split-second decision by a player? Life’s a lot more complicated than that.
Can’t wait for SR Pacifica though. Summer’s great but for the lack of rugby.
Nick Bishop. Many thanks for all your work on The Roar. Such wealth of knowledge. Much appreciated.

Sorry, Piru

Hey Piru
I think you idea would open up a new area of dispute and get even more involvement from the TMO. That is, whether the ball is knocked back, forward or “straight down”.
In my decades as a rugby tragic I have obviously been under the (mis)impression that if the ball hit your hand, or you drop it, and it hits the ground in front of where your feet are, then it’s a knock on. Simplifying that law would take all the guesswork out of many such decisions

If intent is the determinant, then this image would suggest the Welsh #13 had only eyes for the ball. Not intent to tackle Tom Wright. Intent only to cynically knock the ball down.
And surely a more sensible approach to the knock-on fiasco would be a law that if the ball moves from the hand to the ground inn a position ahead of the player’s feet, then it’s a knock on.

As a West Australian, fantastic to see a Beledisloe in Perth. Beautiful day, good crowd, celebration of country and rugby.
ABs a joy to watch.
Great effort Wallabies. Hooper all heart. I’m warming to him.
Banks, Swinton, Lolesio need to go.
Banks forever. Rubbish. Ikeitau kicks better, who as a #13 he’s solid if lacking a bit of oomph/creativity.
Petia, O’Connor, Wilson/Samu in.
Both McDermott and White were good.

MATCH REPORT: Rennie called for a foot on the throat, but All Blacks' response was 'ruthless'

Watching and rewatching that last play, where Flook was held up. Seems he got a knee to ground for an instant not long after being tackled, was picked up by the Force tacklers, and that’s all she wrote.
Games are won and lost on such small margins.

Wise old heads prevail as the Force awakens

Totally agree, Josh, for all the reasons you state.

The GOAT: Who really is the greatest athlete of our generation?

Who’s the backup at 10 if Lolesio gets injured? Hodge?

James O'Connor injury forces major Wallabies shake-up in team for Bledisloe 3

They were fizzing during the Haka, so I reckon they were pretty up for it.

What changes should the All Blacks and Wallabies make for Bledisloe 2?

Lot of comments here, so excuse if this has been asked before.
I’m a bit miffed why Rob Vaneltini got the nod ahead of Liam Wright.
Wright played 6 during SuperRugbyAU, he can jump in the lineout and he is a great defender/ball carrier, tireless in the tough stuff.
Valentini is bigger but IMO no more effective as a ball carrier. Injury prone.
Wright can also provide leadership in the last 20 mins.
Am I missing something?
