Completely agree the World Cup is a tough environment to be thrown into, certainly seems strange none of these younger players were called up earlier. I remember watching pretty uninspiring Australia performances against Japan and Iraq while I was out there and thinking Wright could surely get in the squad then, and that was before the impressive season he just had. Clearly world class players is a huge step up, but having watched a fair amount of both I’d say there isn’t much difference in standard between League One and the A-League but that is another debate altogether…
Wright’s distribution is decent, he’s a pretty calm passer of the ball and usually keeps it simple but there is room for improvement. As I said we’ve not helped him playing him left side although he has done a great job there. He’s not slow by any means, but I have seen him outpaced by quick forwards. These were not meant as criticisms, he has been great this season, I was just trying to give an impression of relative strengths and weaknesses. I’d say winning aerial battles, tackling strongly and putting your body on the line is as important at a World Cup as it is on a rainy Tuesday night in League One! That’s exactly what Jagielka and Cahill are in the England team to do.
That said, as you suggest Wright will be a Championship player in the near future, maybe even a Premiership one if he continues to improve so rapidly. I just hope it’s with Preston! Anyway good luck, will be interesting to see how the youngsters get on.
