wow awesome to open a football article on here and yes its all about the football … well in Janek! Though i do take some issue with your description of a 27-game season as rigorous 😛

Really looking forward to seeing the other Griffiths starting the season with NJ. Didn’t get the time to make an impact on the tail end of last year. And keen to read your follow-up on Jason Culina.

Branko Culina takes a big tactical gamble

i agree ali our bid stadium-wise was abysmal in what offered our game going forward. We aren’t ready to host the cup until it’ll leave something more direct for the A-League.

Given we are a small country in the football world our first chance to host will be the last for a long time. I prefer that to be in 20 years or so when the domestic league will be in a position to benefit for it.

Still am glad we bid just for the experience and to show the football world a glimpse at what potential Australia does have (which the technical report on the bid did do).

Am thrilled that the middle east get the chance to host too. Politically as far as building some friendships in Asia, we are better off focusing on working our way up and earning some cred in region by putting on a great Asian Cup. I’m so over the 18-22 campaign … Russia and Qatar won, good on them both! 🙂

No need for panic over Asian awards snub

well put … do we even need state feds really? (Or state gov’ts but thats another issue.) Surely regional offices with shared back office support would be better. Players paying the costs of some managerial duplication no doubt.
and is it even $50 to ffa… i thought it was more like $10-20 p/player?

Time to move on from football's World Cup post-mortem

yeah nice article mate enjoyed it … big fan of Paartalu myself, wouldn’t mind seeing him get a run alongside McKay in some of the NT games. Valeri and Jedinak both give me the mehs…

True dawn of the false nine? Brisbane Roar preview

lol yeah i’ll take Lowy over Triguboff anyways…

Ugly win satisfies Sooceroos skipper Lucas Neill

i’d still hope he starts with Kennedy, just with someone alongside who offers something a bit different to Timmy. I guess someone will have to lose out with Cahill back in midfield. Stick Brosque up front for the Saudi game.

Will the Socceroos persist with long ball tactics?

agreeing with the remarks about Kennedy and Cahill, not so keen on this combo either. With Kennedy he is good in the air but used to playing alongside guys good on the ground with Grampus. So Leckie or Brosque for me is a better partner. Moving Tim back into a midfield role, still making his ghosting runs into the box. As a constant presence there not as effective it seems.
A lot of JK’s return with Nagoya is from second balls and broken play in the box as well as direct from crosses. And much of that is knockdowns for others. Brosque better to sweep up the scraps perhaps.
And yes can we have McKay further forward…

Socceroos given a scare by unlucky Thailand

he got a run in the Tele (news ltd) online at least

Socceroos' World Cup journey starts in Brisbane

i agree with Futbanous though i can see Tristan’s dilemma … i guess he’d rather his paid columnists that they can afford write broad articles that cut across the whole league rather than analyse just one club, squad or player. And are they being paid enough to spend the time doing something other than the easy option?

I guess there’s a place for keen up and coming writers to populate ‘The Crowd’ articles but its only going to go so far. Difficult place the football media is in trying to nurture that and even employ a few of them without the revenue.

Club-by-club writers would be perfect if they could do it, then you’d really get some interesting yarns from ‘on the ground’.

The A-League is not out of the woods yet

with our game, positive or negative isn’t so important to me as playing it straight and focusing on the football issues. There’s more than enough interesting elements to football without fixating endlessly on the stuff some of them do. The cross-sport barbs that get thrown are a real turn off for all concerned i agree.

The A-League is not out of the woods yet

was thinking the same until Mike worked in a reference to the looming Kennedy aerial bombardment! We could learn a thing or two from how they get the best of him with Nagoya. Efficient way to clock up those points in the opening group phase…

but yeah just get out there folks and recruit a few relos 🙂

Socceroos' World Cup journey starts in Brisbane

yeah 12 will ramp it up further… the transfer market in 11 was actually pretty decent. They’re weaving all these squad related storylines into 12 which will be sweet.

EPL transfer window shuts, Arsenal busy

spot on, the Kewell effect won’t appeal to all Melbourne football fans.

The A-League is not out of the woods yet

i tried the manager games, just missed the playing aspect too much … i’d love them to merge a proper manager mode into fifa. But then i’d probably turn into one of those hermit Japanese ProEvo addicts!

EPL transfer window shuts, Arsenal busy

so true, either lacking in actual football nous or just not given the space to explore it. (Shouldn’t be so on the interwebz where there are no physical page restrictions, just budgetary i guess.)
And the football journos are woefully out of their depth as business analysts for the most part!

The A-League is not out of the woods yet

Cole to Lille is a left-field one … Lugano to PSG is a welcome signing for me, Sakho could use the help at the back. And i’m planning on taking the reins there on manager mode when fifa 12 lands later this month. Should be a nice transfer kitty with the Qatari owners hehe.

EPL transfer window shuts, Arsenal busy

and most of all about the football itself. Capital, TV rights, ownership, governance … interesting to some of us but secondary on a sports site you’d think. Yet to see much in the way of previews from columnists on this site of how the various A-L squads are shaping up. Does anyone even get out to pre-season matches? Even if they don’t generate as many comments they’d still make for good reading.

The A-League is not out of the woods yet

i cut both Arnold and Farina some slack as they came through the systems here when they were in a very barren state. They both stepped up when clearly not ready and in some ways sacrificed their reputations for it.

Will Pim's Accumulators transform into Holger's Entertainers?

the games in china are especially good value … with differing languages thru afc and the way each culture orders names and surnames. There’s so many different conventions. Does make the broadcasts nicely idiosyncratic.

Will Pim's Accumulators transform into Holger's Entertainers?

makes u wonder how we would have gone if Advocaat had of taken up the job… Verbeek offered some additional insight on Asia which was a plus i guess.

Will Pim's Accumulators transform into Holger's Entertainers?

‘Peter’ Verbeek? Those AFC match graphics, gotta love em 🙂

Will Pim's Accumulators transform into Holger's Entertainers?

as for ‘perspective’ he does deliver quite a bit of that to external critics of the game… especially followers of narrow domestic sports who for some reason bother to offer uninformed views on football.

if i could be bothered i’d go back through every article he’s written and come up with some figures of what % of the time he even mentions eggball though. I suspect it’d be lower than most folks think. Though some of us are totally lapping it up when he does! 🙂

Response to Fozzie's call to forget 'eggball'

gawd i love that we have a real qualifying campaign to follow these days … the realities of clocking up points versus performance versus regeneration … lovely that we are able to ponder such questions!

Will Pim's Accumulators transform into Holger's Entertainers?

yah hilarious read 😀
i don’t recall Foz spending that much time on eggball btw …
and he calls it ‘football’ coz well thats what the world calls this sport. Feel free to take it up with FIFA for breaching Aussie rules’ intellectual property. I don’t know that either of the rugby codes are that worried bout it internationally.

Response to Fozzie's call to forget 'eggball'

gloria is more pro-cahill than pro-football tbf
