i agree Mark though football does take up a whole lot of time, especially when u throw the PS3 into the mix. But yeah still find time for watching cycling stages in various tours (and getting on an actual bike) plus MotoGP, DTMs.

Which will be top summer sport in Oz in 20 years?

cheers jmac will pick that one up… Hopefully our newest land owning friends from across the shores will step in to ensure the future of these areas. Our own governments beholden to political cycles have shown themselves incapable.
And a nice bonus that these ‘foreign invaders’ bring their sporting tastes with them (again).

Football looking well placed into the future

well with the amount of coinage flowing into Euro club football from not just Qatar but elsewhere … not too sure if that response is a dead cert. Maybe they’re waiting for that fact to seep in for more of those clubs before going to FIFA with a date change.

oh for a government with some foresight or at least China-style centralised planning! (Dumbocracy is for dumb-dumbs.) Regionalise maaaan 😉

Football looking well placed into the future

Brett was a gun athlete all round, i was a year or two ahead of him at MacFields HS. Never was credited at school as a footballer, more as a state rep athlete from (hazy) memory. I suspect things are changing there which recognition wise can only help our developing players. Especially with the looming introduction of youth age team systems for A-League clubs.

No place like home for Australian footballers

give it a few years for the hot air to blow over … our Qatari friends just have to ask fifa and it’ll be moved to January… common sense will prevail.

100pc agree Fuss … we claim to be punching above our weight, which we do in some realms. But its hardly as unique a thing as we are led to believe. Those fine Nordic nations as a case in point! 🙂

Football looking well placed into the future

would have made Matty’s agents head explode… i disagree with the buyout clauses, they are no doubt being phased out by the wiser clubs. But once they’re in there…

Football looking well placed into the future

and lets not forget why there is so much ‘ignorance’ … the league in Syd/Melb was not built with the future generations in mind, it was (understandably) constructed as a safe haven for recent migrants. No surprise that so many people now in their 20s and 30s never caught on and have no reason to reminisce about it.

tapping into state leagues would be fine if they were indeed “state” leagues… they are mostly capital city leagues. A second div would need some distinct regions aside from stacking it out with Sydney and Melbourne teams. A nice thing to go along with a broader regionalisation of Oz, which has been pointed to for some time in the political sphere yet never properly acted on.

Football looking well placed into the future

surely football won’t be a “summer sport” in 20 years, we’ll be running nine or ten months of the year by then you’d hope. If we can’t get that one done in 20 years… what hope is there of making a world cup semi-finals within 20 years? Or maybe even winning one. Or an Asian Champions League. An Asian Cup. Some REAL silverware! 🙂

meh, nothing special there … why do they always run the ‘i’m no soccer cheerleader’ line … like being anything but them with their default critical view IS being a ‘soccer cheerleader’? Like football really needs the critiques of such ‘jack of all trades’. I’d rather get the informed, nuanced view of a 100pc football analyst anyday!

Rebecca Wilson's ranting means the A-League must be getting to her

not all that many … i do agree that too many Oz football reporters write about off-field stuff. We have a low level of football analysis here no doubt influenced by the space handed over to the likes of R.Wilson. What outlet here will publish someone with a primary focus on the game itself?

Its also about what’s offered in the very sport. Even at the most basic level i find football offers more in a tactical or technical sense than the dominant sports here.

Rebecca Wilson's ranting means the A-League must be getting to her

jack of all trades for sure 🙂

i guess we get a lot of those here as the sports they are mostly preoccupied with are not so sophisticated as football … there isn’t the depth there to know much about to begin with. (I’ve followed all of them growing up.) Explains the constant ‘code warring’, preoccupation with off field antics, yearly rule changes etc etc.

Rebecca Wilson's ranting means the A-League must be getting to her

oh boohoo baby had to do what daddy said… welcome to the world… he got plenty through Les’s filter which could/should have been applied more rigorously to begin with.

Rebecca Wilson's ranting means the A-League must be getting to her

yeah there’s so much more meat on the (football) bone isn’t there. When will these carpet-strolling media management types cotton on to what’s just sitting in their laps… i guess the biff and barge, on and off field eggball circus is just too easy. 🙂

Rebecca Wilson's ranting means the A-League must be getting to her

i always thought that was just a case of co-opting your opponents tactics… as far as his demeaning attitude goes. Don’t know that he mentions it that often, maybe you’re only paying attention to those ones.

Rebecca Wilson's ranting means the A-League must be getting to her

and did so based on having read too many of his previous blogs! 🙂

Rebecca Wilson's ranting means the A-League must be getting to her

i think that was a bit of a cumulative effect of having been reading his blogs for too long!

Rebecca Wilson's ranting means the A-League must be getting to her

a tough one for readers of Straya’s mainstream sports media to comprehend Fuss, you’re setting the bar a little high 😉

Rebecca Wilson's ranting means the A-League must be getting to her

ummm because we’d already been reading the same things over and over and over and over… and it weren’t that good the first time round…

Rebecca Wilson's ranting means the A-League must be getting to her

TC: must be reading different comments to me… Fink’s efforts were pretty routinely shot down for the shallow unbalanced rants they were. And u can be assured that no self-respecting football fans are wanting people to be publicists for the game’s administration. FFA must be the most analysed sporting org on the planet from its own fans … we’re always very guarded and quick to express displeasure. You haven’t been paying much attention if u can’t see that.

Rebecca Wilson's ranting means the A-League must be getting to her

i do love the way football operates on so many levels. Being so accessibly participative it can also engage in a more active way too. (As much as i also enjoy watching the game as well!)

if i ever get around to travelling i’d be keen to go to a gay games some time. Similar to the homeless world cup i guess … it engages people who are often times marginalised. I know the local sydney team here was a great thing for me growing up. Just being able to deal with “issues” in a less direct way is pretty powerful and tends to make personal progress stick. Like the blog is saying, its what happens after the event. These sorts of groups can be real catalysts for folks.

Measures of Hope: The Homeless World Cup

🙂 i guess we define ‘ethnically founded’ differently! Meow?
Strayan is the only ethnicity any of the clubs were founded in really

How A-League should’ve looked from day one

ha can’t see it on 442s site, deleted? i guess someone broke an embargo. The article did say it was a ‘briefing’ … they had a pic of the logo and everything. Good one though if its legit
