A few other things we’ve learned, Brett…

1. Cheika’s poor selections really were the problem. These selections both ended some careers and extended or started others that shouldn’t have been. And sent australian rugby to its lowest depths in 60 years

2. No coach should ever have sole rites over selections again

3. Even if we make it deep into the RWC finals Cheikas time as head coach should be viewed as a failure. His winning record will be artificially enhanced because of the easy pool games in Two world cups. The unnecessary misery inflicted on the Australian rugby community between world cups is not justified by good results at the World Cup!

What we know after the Wallabies' stunning Bledisloe 1 win

Foley being in the squad is a farce

Michael Cheika has found his Wallabies team, now he has to stick to it for the World Cup

Can certainly see the temptation because he’s played there before but it seems he’s gone out if his way to develop his skills at center – and bulked up – so would prefer to play him where he feels most at home

Haha. Typo!

You’re kidding re Foley and Beale? Failed combinations at super and test levels for literally years.

You’re doing a Cheika and playing JOC our off position, Peter. Hasn’t played 15 for years. He’s a centre

Not really. It’s the selection panels chance to stop the ship from syncing. They can’t create cohesive combinations over night but they can make some common sense calls that have been long overdue.

Dumb rugby – that unfortunately has become the “Australian way”. Why is it that NZ are always outfoxing opponents by staying one step ahead in terms of strategy? It can’t be that they just have much better coaches – although that probably is true. There must be something in their organizational set up that encourages risk and experimentation with new tactics/techniques to maintain that edge. We seem risk-averse, and for as long as we are we won’t compete amongst the top tier nations.

Why the Wallabies were caught short in Johannesburg

even though JoC has been playing in the centres for the past two years?

How the Brumbies stampeded towards the Super Rugby semis

I think Ruru played much better last year – perhaps as you say, due to more game time – but when he had an entire game to himself (against crusaders), he played quite poorly. now, not sure that’s because of the state of the team, the quality of the opposition, but certainly not due to being overworked.

The Wrap: Only one Australian finalist a poor Super Rugby return

It’s not an obsession. It was plain to see. If you look at the beginning of the season, he was playing brilliant football, far beyond the skills of any other Australian. He has had a shocking fall in the last two games, but has still been quite good throughout the season. If you were simply picking on form, you could not pick Foley ahead of him. You’d probably have to pick CLL.

Um how many democracies are there in the gulf?

Is Russia ready to host the Rugby World Cup?

Um… After the travesty that resulted in Russia hosting the football world cup (it should have been England but wasn’t because of Russian corruption), no one should seriously consider allowing Russia to host any international events in the near future.

International sporting events are not just a showcase for the best in a given sport – they demonstrate what sport stands for in the wider community. And countries that continually rate at the top of the list of Most Corrupt nations should be barred from holding these events. Not to mention rogue states that are actively trying to destabilise democracies around the world.

He also links well with the backs

How Australia can win the battle of the big men

I thought we’d found our best lock combination a few years ago when Arnold paired with Coleman. But then Cheika started mixing it up again

How Australia can win the battle of the big men

Might be good to start with Beale at FB with Hodge and a speedster on the wings, with DHP as the back three cover.

Why Israel Folau has done Kurtley Beale a favour

But DHP hasn’t really lit up the pitch since his return. I really like him as a player but his decision making and performance have been sub-par so far this season. Think he might be overlooked for someone more reliable like Hodge who can also kick long-range goals and has a big boot.

Why Israel Folau has done Kurtley Beale a favour

It was his cameos as a “finisher” in the 2015 RWC that earned him high praise most recently. But since then he has proven himself incapable of fly-half and, many would say, inside centre as well. Also, haven’t seen him play wing for a long time. So he’s really only an option at fullback. Therefore, he either starts at fullback or he doesn’t play.

Why Israel Folau has done Kurtley Beale a favour

haha. probably not. when was that?

Why the Wallabies' props are no longer in a bind

Good point. Holmes just seemed to get better as he aged. Doesn’t seem to be the case with Kepu, but maybe there’s still something in him for RWC?

Why the Wallabies' props are no longer in a bind

Timani looked a lot better than Hannigan ever did and was given far fewer opportunities to impress. I think “cut loose” covers him pretty well, no?

Why the Wallabies' props are no longer in a bind

Haha. Russian troll farm, for sure

The Wrap: Super Rugby’s week 13, lucky for some

It’s a tournament, not knock out rugby. That was one game. Otherwise QC outplayed BF all season

Rebels rule over Reds for vital victory

Yes but…. it all comes down to the application of it. Eg in tahs v rebels, Foley holds down Cooper and Cooper reacts with open handed shove. So automatic YC to Foley and RC to Cooper? Seems a bit over the top. I would penalize the cynical play and warn or fine the player for the reaction

Thomas du Toit’s yellow card was spot on and there should be more of them

I hope someone pointed this out already – there is NO right to free speech in Australia. There is no statute enshrining that in law. Not in Australia. So, no, he does not have a right to free speech. He is constrained by the same limitations that we all are – for example, we can’t defame others or engage in hate speech. And when you work for a corporation you have to also abide by the constraints they apply in their code of conduct.

Israel Folau does not deserve the sack
