I’m not saying they weren’t. Just noting that they would all have a reason to a little more motivated than usual to make a few statements. Absolutely clear that Cooper has been fired up by Thorn’s blacklisting. I’m sure the other two were similarly motivated

Halfway to heaven: The Will and Quade show rolls on

Ironically, the three of them – QC KH JS – all have BT to thank for their current form. By not playing them, not only did he provide them with the motivation to prove him wrong but allowed them to move to clubs where they were wanted and have thrived as a result

Halfway to heaven: The Will and Quade show rolls on

Hope you’re right but still but if Hanigan Phipps and AAC are anywhere near the team we’ll know that Cheika still holds the reins

Also wonder when their influence will start showing in the wallabies training camps

McCaffrey too slow for 7, no?

Six talking points from Super Rugby Round 5

This article was written to provoke those who’ve found something to be excited by in a certain player. Written by a pundit with a provincial axe to grind. Poor form for the roar

Calm down over Quade

Made the same observation – they don’t seem to be entering the ruck through the gate. Is that not a rule at ruck time anymore?

Why possession is nine-tenths of the law

How many other players were told to “go and enjoy their rugby”? That’s right – none. He was blacklisted

Eight talking points from Super Rugby Round 3

Agree with most of that but McMahon played one of the most commanding performances by a back rower in Australia for years when we last beat the ABs. Don’t see him as a poor mans Hooper at all

Mick O’Connor? Start Pocock in the 7 and Hooper off the bench, thanks

Great post, Nicholas. One for the believers. One of the reasons why (some) people like watching Cooper play is how he deceives the opposition. Is he going to pass left or right, short or long, or will he kick, in which case a grubber, chip or for the corner? It doesn’t always come off but you can’t help but smile when it does. And that’s why I watch competitive sports – to see the magic. The pass I couldn’t throw, the bait and switch I wouldn’t have thought of let alone execute. And as rugby players start to resemble one another in physical attributes, it’s refreshing to see someone possessing skills that go beyond what you can achieve in the gym!

Welcome back to the big time, Quade Cooper

“…set himself up as the bad boy of the tournament…”. Um, yeah. That’s exactly how it happened. It was cooper and not the NZ media that did that. Right.

Welcome back to the big time, Quade Cooper

It’s called deception. Something none of our other fly halves are capable of and is essential in pulling off backline moves like the one The iceman blew last year against the ABs

Welcome back to the big time, Quade Cooper

GIven that Hooper is faster than Pocock, but Pocock is more dynamic over the ball (and I dare say as good a link man as Hooper), what would your ideal WB back row look like – including the bench?

Why rugby is moving towards league

I see what you did there – Scott Johnson features heavily in the first video you posted 🙂 Do you really think he’s going to make enough of an impact to change the Wallabies fortunes this year?

Why Rugby Australia should listen to Bob Dwyer and dump the Giteau Law

Agree with you there. One thuthat has stood out over last two years is that no one in MCs teams are getting better as players – the opposite is happening. So the energy that comes from players that have been adding to their skill sets injected into the squad would be invaluable. And now there is a coaching shake up happening perhaps new ideas will start to find expression on the field

Why Rugby Australia should listen to Bob Dwyer and dump the Giteau Law

Terrific article, Nick. Haven’t seen the England game yet, but looking forward to watching Dempsey and Kepu.

However, to pick a bone with your analogy to the movie All Is Lost…there is a strong case to be made that Redford’s character is hallucinating as he sinks – ie there is no saving hand. Read that way, for Cheika, all really is lost!

But didn’t genia used to be one of the best defenders? I remember him pulling out a lot of try saving tackles prior to his shift to defending at fullback

Why the answers for Australian rugby are blowin’ in the wind

Been hoping for that to happen for literally years. Even if it does happen now I think it’s too late. Feels like there’s been some irreparable damage done to team confidence. It’s like looking on at a co-dependent relationship – you keep hoping that one day one of them will just walk away, while knowing they never will. Quite possibly there’s Irreparable damage done to the fan base as well!

Why the answers for Australian rugby are blowin’ in the wind

To single out Castle as the one thing wrong with Australian rugby is to be willfully blind. All of the problems with the current board and team and coach were there prior to Castle’s arrival. It’s indicative of the misogyny among the old guard of coaches/journos that demand Castle’s head (Alan Jones comes to mind, and now Spiro). I think we should wait to see what comes from the review of Cheika’s performance. If there’s no change, then I think then you can say that she has failed in her role. But to lay the blame of the wallabies worst year in decades at her feet is patently absurd.

To save the Wallabies, Clyne, Castle and Cheika must go

Agree. Clearly not someone in it for the team.

Beale and Ashley-Cooper stood down after breaching team protocol

Both of these guys have form in this area. AAC under Link and Beale before the third Lions game. This should be the last of AAC in gold but it won’t be because Cheika doesn’t seem to care about standards – for either behavior or form – when it comes to his favorites

Beale and Ashley-Cooper stood down after breaching team protocol

You’re probably right. I was thinking that the reason behind all the changes lately was due to a growing awareness of the issues with his favorite players. I guess we’ll find out when the side is announced

Combinations and chemistry take time. Why haven't we been patient?

Hi Brett, it seems clear that it’s finally dawning on Cheika that something is seriously amiss with the team. Shuffling deck chairs on the Titanic comes to mind because he’s not making the brave calls required like excluding players that aren’t performing and bringing new faces into the squad

We are where we are because of years of stubborn selections of poor performers.

And AAC in the team should be read as an admission of failure by Cheika. He’s run out of ideas.

Whistling into the wind, Fionn. Few writers like Spiro or the fanatics at Fox are going deviate from the Foley line (because there’s no one else) because they will not accept that they were wrong. It would undermine their position as influencers.

They’ll claim victory either way. If Foley plays WWC and we crash out, well, there was no one else. And if he doesn’t play and we crash out, well, you know it wouldn’t have happened if Foley had played!

Won’t change their minds with facts because they have skin in the game.
