It’s a pity that Greenedge never signed Richie Porte. It would be interesting to know the reasons why neither party seemed interested in the other. Hopefully the political side of Australian cycling which has long been an albatross around the sport’s neck had nothing to do with it.
Richie would have given the team some focus going into the Grand Tours and a rider to hang their hat on in those races which would have been particularly important with a new naming sponsor coming on board in May. Richie looks in particularly good form this year but I think he could be wasted looking after the great British hopes at Sky.
Greenedge’s Cobbles campaign was a disaster in anyone’s book, especially coming on the back of some startling and unexpected victories earlier in the season.
Langveldt’s crash in Flanders was unfortunate but no one was there to take up the reigns when he was unable to continue and with all due respect to Stuart O’grady, his best years are behind him and he is not the great hope he once was in these races. Perhaps it is a sign of a lack of depth across the board at Greenedge.
That being said, Greenedge’s results so far must be beyond the team’s wildest expectations but a lean trot must come sooner or later and it is a pity that it may well be at the Giro or the Tour.
Let’s hope Goss or Gerrans can deliver a stage win on cycling’s biggest stage and give their new sponsor a fabulous welcome to the sport.
