All Nat’s toughest questions that pick at the loose threads of my arguments I always assume ARE rhetorical mushi. 😂 😂 😂

Sterlo on concussion: “We need to make the head an absolute no-go zone”

It would help them to improve Ken. The challenge would help them to lift their standard.

Like many here, in junior football I backed up and played up a grade against bigger kids many times. Once I even backed up 2 grades higher against kids 2 years older than me.

But then, I was in the Victor Radley mould and would bash kids twice my size. I modelled my defence on Terry Randall and I played 1st grade at High School since I was 16 yrs old and played against 18 and 19 year olds. I even played as a 16 year old against David Knox the former ARU Wallaby representative who was 2 years older than me.

I just would support that sort of thing from mid teenage years on only. Younger kids MUST be protected not just for their own safety but to stop their mums directing them towards soccer or worse… AFL!

Sterlo on concussion: “We need to make the head an absolute no-go zone”

I’ve always said I would support medical retirements due to NRL related injuries. That includes Boyd Cordner, Jake Friend and potentially Luke Keary. Just as the same should have applied to Brett Stewart, Steve Matai and Anthony Watmough.

Sterlo on concussion: “We need to make the head an absolute no-go zone”

You’re right mushi, it is laughable the favouritism extended to the Roosters and the Storm. Very sporting of you to agree with me. There’s hope for you yet mate.

Not to fear though, the chooks protector “The Teflon Don” can’t protect the battery hens forever mushi. All things end eventually. Remember that. 😂

Sterlo on concussion: “We need to make the head an absolute no-go zone”

I missed the U7’s although I had one game when I was 5 yrs old. So by the time I started playing around 11-12 yrs this system wasn’t in place at that age group in the mid to late 70’s and early 80’s.

I had to tackle a few behemoths (aka manchild) in my day. But it worked itself out by our late teens when we were all now bigger than those kids and we used to line up to bash them. Particularly one kid “little Joe” who was adult sized when I was 12 yrs old and he played for the Mascot Jets.

One day one of our team recognised him during a game and the call went out; “Little Joe! Little Joe!” and we took turns lining him up and drilling him! Oh, happy days! Happy days! 😁

Sterlo on concussion: “We need to make the head an absolute no-go zone”

A beacon of calm light? More like Sterlo is a beacon for sunlight on a sunny day. 😂
Re the low scything tackles, we could see more of those TSL if the NRL followed the above suggestion by DPS to reward low tackles like dominant tackles and thus eliminate the need for clubs to coach Melbourne wrestling and jiu-jitsu tactics.

Sterlo on concussion: “We need to make the head an absolute no-go zone”

That was supposed to be the rule years ago but the refs refused to call it. It would stop a lot of the problems with wresting, jiu-jitsu holds, cannonballs and swinging arm high shots if this was introduced and players used the correct technique aka Sam Burgess and Jake T. (Jurbo).

Sterlo on concussion: “We need to make the head an absolute no-go zone”

Absolutely. There should also be a weight for age system so smaller kids are not trampled underfoot by kids who are well ahead of the developmental curve physically (i.e. “manchild”). They should all compete against kids their own weight and size.

Sterlo on concussion: “We need to make the head an absolute no-go zone”

A rocket surgeon, Ken? If that was a HIA I missed that the first time round so perhaps I should sit out the rest of this topic then. 😛

Sterlo on concussion: “We need to make the head an absolute no-go zone”

I doubt it KenW. This version of me before contact sports, always hated maths but I have always been fascinated by space. I came top of my high school in biology but stuggled with the mathematical components of chemistry, valences, free electrons and such and I was even worse at physics.

Believe me there are far bigger “Sliding Doors” moments in my life, both good and bad, that have had an even bigger impact on who I am today. For example a bad knee injury that ended my junior rep footy and my NRL aspirations but saw me take up singing, perform on stage and even sing on stage at the Sydney Opera House. Not bad for a boy from Redfern. 😁

Sterlo on concussion: “We need to make the head an absolute no-go zone”

That hook was in the water for a very long time BD. I was sure I was going to catch a Nat-fish but not a nibble. I thought it might shed a little light on some common areas of concern, yes. 😂

Sterlo on concussion: “We need to make the head an absolute no-go zone”

Until the disincentive is strong enough and consistently enforced don’t hold your breath waiting for coaches to coach this out of the game.

Not when teams like the Storm can cynically take a player out of the contest (Matterson) and have the offender (Kaufusi) avoid being sent off or sin-binned. Then only to receive a slap on wrist 2 week suspension while Matterson was out of the game for over 4 weeks!

Meanwhile, Latrell Mitchell gets a ridiculous 4 week suspension for something not even half as dangerous and with no premeditation or malicious intent, unlike Kaufusi’s assault upon Matterson. Also, in light of Latrell’s lengthy suspension, WHY did Victor Radley only received a 1 week suspension for a high shot and WHY does JWH routinely gets let off for serial offences of this manner?

The question has to be asked, WHY do the Storm and the Roosters consistently get preferential treatment on the field, with the match review committee and with the judiciary? When was the last time that a player from either club was dealt with harshly rather than being let off or receiving a lesser penalty than other players for the same offences?

The inconsistency in grading and sentencing for these offences falls well short of discouraging this behaviour and only exacerbates the problem as clubs who continually receive favouritism continue to roll the dice.

Sterlo on concussion: “We need to make the head an absolute no-go zone”

I grew up in the silvertails vs fibros era when the Western Suburbs Magpies used to warm up slapping each other in the face. It inspired me to headbutt lockers before 1st grade games. It didn’t do me any harm at all. Some might say that it even knocked some sense into me. 😛 😂

Sterlo on concussion: “We need to make the head an absolute no-go zone”

Why all the fuss Tony? I grew up playing lots of footy and copped plenty of knocks to the head. Growing up in Redfern even more so. It knocked some sense into me and made me the man I am today. 😛 😂

Sterlo on concussion: “We need to make the head an absolute no-go zone”

I’ll go to all their games Nat and cheer them on wearing my “random Souths guy” Rabbitohs jersey. Moreton Daily Stadium (Dolphin oval) is only 10 – 15 mins drive from me.

When I first lived up here Jan. 1999 – Jan. 2003 I lived about 300 metres from Dolphin oval and went to many of their games during that period while the Rabbitohs were in exile.

Is Dearden's decision to head north the right one?

That’s why there are still concussions within the NFL despite the players wearing helmets.

Sterlo on concussion: “We need to make the head an absolute no-go zone”

If the Redcliffe Dolphins are fortunate enough to be the next Brisbane expansion side they could do a lot worse than target QLDers Harry Grant, Sam Walker, Cameron Munster and Kayln Ponga as their spine and sign up Father Time Wayne Bennett as coach. That would be a pretty solid foundation to start building a new franchise upon.

Is Dearden's decision to head north the right one?

“Of that group I would have Cheese, Welsh and Edwards.”

I would have Harry Grant and Sam Walker (despite only 30 odd combined NRL games and being 23 and 18) over B. Smith, Welsh and Edwards combined. And I’ll even throw in TPJ the rollercoaster wrecking ball.

Is Dearden's decision to head north the right one?

Papa Sparty can’t come to the phone right now so I’ll answer for them… go with your your third suggestion Emcie. Both! 😁 👍

Latrell Mitchell and Cody Walker need to clean up their games

Never let the truth get in the way of a good story, Pomoz. That’s the first rule of journalism.

The second rule is, if you can’t find a source on which to base a story then make one up and call it “a confidential source” which is in turn protected by a make believe code of practice.

I was close to becoming a journalist myself and even worked as a young intern at the old Sun newspaper in the early 80’s. So I’m practically an expert at telling “stories”. 😂

Unfortunately for Broncos fans, a fish rots from the head

“Pity towards the Broncos? …I absolutely relish the fact the Broncos have dwindled to such a laughing stock. The club has been characterised by arrogance and hubris since day 1”
That isn’t an account of mine Nat! Although I admit it sounds a lot like me. 😂 😂 😂
Some really valid points well expressed LiM. 👍

Unfortunately for Broncos fans, a fish rots from the head

You mean like Sam Walker? Yet another loss from the Broncos junior nursery. Pity your chooks couldn’t leave the kid to play with club that developed him. But then the chooks have always been the wolf in the fold of the junior development of other clubs. Little wonder though when the only current Roosters junior in their squad is Victor Radley.

Unfortunately for Broncos fans, a fish rots from the head

Benji and Turbo were standouts this round amongst others. Benji certainly saved Souths from an upset loss to the Titans as the Titanohs overcame an average performance with moments of brilliance with Benji heavily involved on each of those occasions.

Eight talking points from NRL Round 7

Scoring 3 tries against the Storm signalled the beginning of a change in the Dogs fortunes. Following the Dogs being kept to ZERO for 3 straight weeks they have now followed this with 3 straight weeks of scoring 18 points and 3 tries each week. But they have conceded 94 points in the last 3 weeks while scoring only 54 points in reply.

It’s pretty clear the Dogs need to work on their defence and with the Eels next up the Dogs will face a tough challenge to turn their first win in 7 weeks into a mini winning streak.

In the last 2 weeks the Eels have an aggregate score of 81-16 so there is little doubt the Dogs defence will be tested to it’s limit and 18 points will not be a big enough total to defend.

Eight talking points from NRL Round 7

$2.6 mill for Moylan, Dugan and A. Fafita! Talking about poor investments! The Sharks need to fix that hole fast. Otherwise, they are gonna need a bigger boat!
