Location: regional NSW Likes: StGeorge and Cronulla since childhood in NRL. Barca in the Champions League. But happy to applaud entertaining footy and boo catty play and shitty calls regardless of which team is playing. Played: league, soccer, basketball, swimming, boxing, cricket... until I discovered surfing. Dislikes: Studs raised tackles, sharpened old-school screw in studs, catty/dirty players, cheap shots, players who sook and carry on when their opponents give their own medicine back to them, petty ROAR contributors who throw a tantrum or resort to personal snarkiness when someone has a different opinion to their own. Sooks. Baristas... stop faffing about and pour the bloody milk!

Are we past fed up with the bunker making incorrect decisions? The whole point of this intrusive, excessively slow decision making process using endless slow motion replays (even for decisions that should be adjudicated at real world speed) is to make correct decisions. This game was one of worst officiated games in living memory, to the point that I switched off the TV. How can the MRC and the bunker and Annersley be so far apart? This game is worth rewatching to record all the missed calls in general play and all the incorrect calls from bunker via replay. Ask yourself how these instances would be called in a SOO match. Ask yourself how they definitively called Coates for not having both feet behind the kicker – seriously. Ask youself how the bunker slid past Cobbo knock on competing in the air in goal, where’s the rock and roll of that footage? On and on. The bunker is a head office imposition, it is their solution and we seem to be stuck with it. For the bunker to have any credibility, the viewing public need to be seeing the same footage that the bunker is looking at. All of it. Every angle they are looking at to make a transparent decision. If rugby league HQ cannot do that then they have no idea, none at all.

Round 11 judiciary: Origin duo charged, NRL admits sin-binning was wrong call as hip-drop confusion reigns

I missed this game Mike, how did Campbell Graham go?

ANALYSIS: Souths go top with routine win - and there's plenty of green shoots for the Wests Tigers

I switched off after Flegler’s blatant interference with the marker try. How is the bunker so ridiculously fussy to call Coates not having both feet behind the kicker, but have no interest in Flegler? And miss the clear Cobbo touch in the air for a Broncos knock on, and, and, and. The Carrigan sin bin was ridiculous… but after all the fuss made about Josh Raynolds saying “BS” to a ref, how does Carrigan get away saying the dumb decision is “F***ing Bulls***”” before departing the ref’s presence. The officiating made this too difficult to watch, I lost interest and switched off.

ANALYSIS: Reynolds hurt, Carrigan in hip-drop strife and Kevvie rages - but did Broncos just enhance premiership case?

Come on, $1.6 million per year for a Rugby League winger is laughably ridiculous. I have no idea why RA paid so much for Sualii, I can’t see any NRL club would be willing to paying more than half that… but I guess RA was banking on another 2 seasons of development and experience in the Roosters system. Currently he is a proven performer as a winger only. He is still wearing L plates as a centre or fullback. I am still waiting to hear from anyone who has seen this promising youngster kick a footy… ever…. anyone? Maybe he has a brilliant kick, but noone commenting on Roar forum or in the media has any idea. Sualii is clearly an early developer and a gifted athlete, and he seems a determined and whole hearted player who runs the ball back strongly and competes well in the air for attacking kicks. RA appears to be looking for another Izzy, good luck, best wishes, but RA have overpaid way too much for potential. I appreciate the author’s point which is wondering what RA would be willing to pay for a proven champion NRL player. It’s not such far fetched speculation if you believe that $1.6m per season for Sualii is just a little bit … crazy?

If RA are happy to pay an average Joe $1.6m, how much would they pay for an actual rugby league star?

The removal of one on field ref in 2020 was nothing to do with the GF blunder. It was brought in with the “6 again” call and was presented as a way to reduce the number of stoppages and as a cost saving measure. But we don’t have fewer stoppages. This was a PVL brain fart that has increased reliance on the bunker interventions. If you are happy with the bunker interventions in general play, stick with one ref. If you want reduced use of bunker and reduced stoppages, return to two refs each with a specified role so they are not both trying to watch and rule on the same thing.

Annesley slams Warriors sponsor over 'cheating of the highest order' bunker rant: 'No comment could be worse'

I understand it is a slur, but in all seriousness it’s like calling for punishment for a half tanked bloke in the pub for shouting “cheat” at the big screen telly. The only outcome from legal action would be to attract waaaay more attention to the reality of inconsistencies in decision making. And what power does NRL HQ have over a private individual expressing their view? That they are associated with a company that sponsors a particular NRL team is irrelevant – the Company is a separate legal entity and there is no way the expressed outrage could have been sanctioned by the Company. This is great click bait for confected outrage, but what NRL rule has been broken? The NRL isn’t the boss of the world and does not have direct authority over the individual Warriors fan. Finally, where do you see it going if the NRL decides, at their sole discretion that they want to start punishing team sponsors? You want to give your heard earned to a team? Sure, here are all the punitive measures you are signing up to for that “privilege”.

Two refs didn’t make the error, only one ref made the error. It totally sucked but I don’t see how it’s an argument against two on field refs.

Magic Round… Do you reward and support rugby league heartland by playing magic round in Brisbane, or do you use magic round concept to play somewhere where the NRL is trying to grow and promote the game? In an extended duration comp… can the NRL afford to do both? My 2 cents, i would love to see a MR in NZ each year to promote RL in NZ. Strategically timed for maximum exposure and split between two grounds, maybe one ground on North Island and one on South Island. I’d fly over to NZ to watch a full day of footy and see the Warriors play in front of a home crowd. This can’t start soon enough if there is any thought of a second NZ team in an expanded 20 team NRL comp.

Round 10 Talking Points: Should be two Magic Rounds, Cody-Latrell combo can light up Blues, Cowboys giddy up

How is the gate and earnings split between the clubs for Magic round?

Round 10 Talking Points: Should be two Magic Rounds, Cody-Latrell combo can light up Blues, Cowboys giddy up

No way man, I too had Souths in the 2023 GF before season start… my prediction of Souths vs Easts 2023 GF is still looking rock solid. Easts have clearly been playing strategically to minimise selections for SOO 2023, with Rads going above and beyond to become a Pommy. A fit and healthy Easts will storm home in the back half of the season to finish top 4, finishing strong with StG just squeaking into the 8 🙂

Round 10 Talking Points: Should be two Magic Rounds, Cody-Latrell combo can light up Blues, Cowboys giddy up

What’s the pressure on Griffin? Seriously, his contract is up at end of season 2023 and StG have 2 wins after 10 rounds and are running equal last place. Noone, least of all Griffin himself has any expectation his contract will be extended – where is the pressure? That’s all over now. Griffin is effectively a caretaker coach for the remainder of his contract and has the opportunity to smell the roses and enjoy his final season as NRL head coach. It’s the StG players who should be feeling pressure, each of them needs to show the next coach that they are worth retaining for 2024 and beyond.

Wow, how many clubs would love to have Mahoney as their #9 on that money for the next three seasons. And wow, to be arguing that $600,000 per year is good value to pay an Aussie bloke to play footy for a living…

Money well spent: an NRL team full of stars that are actually worth the price tag

That’s fine as long as you want endless interventions from the bunker.

Annesley slams Warriors sponsor over 'cheating of the highest order' bunker rant: 'No comment could be worse'

Yep, that was a horrible situation, an error that could not be rectified without one team or the other being disadvantaged. BUT… i invite you to revisit the replay of the incident. One ref made the error all on his own, he called and waved “six again” and then he immediately changed/reversed his own call to “last tackle”. I might be wrong but I don’t think this was anything to do with two refs making contrary calls – this was an instance of one ref reversing his own call. What we don’t know is if he changed his decision because the bunker was in his ear…

Annesley slams Warriors sponsor over 'cheating of the highest order' bunker rant: 'No comment could be worse'

Refs being held to account for consistency using super slow-mo replays. There is no way consistency could be demonstrated, because decision making in real time with the naked eye is imperfect. It could be hilarious.

Annesley slams Warriors sponsor over 'cheating of the highest order' bunker rant: 'No comment could be worse'

I don’t know how many good minutes can Qld expect from him? It would be great to have his potential impact off the bench, but how many edge forwards can you have on an Origin bench? Is it more than zero? I reckon he’s an ideal #18 for SOO.

'I had a good look at myself': How a year of soul-searching is making David Fifita a must-pick for Queensland

One ref to focus on the ruck and forward passes from dummy half, one ref to maintain the 10m and watch for late shots. Notice how the AFL does it – now 4 on field refs, only use replays for goal line decisions, all other decisions made with the naked eye to keep the game moving. That’s the “fabric of the game”, that keeping the ball in play and minimising stoppages is more important than millimetre perfect, endless slow-mo replay decision. They accept that real time ref decisions won’t always be perfect, but that is the price you pay to keep the ball in play. NRL went the other way, a way that does not and cannot work for junior footy, but promotes arguing with the ref at every level. If the bunker was the answer… was the question “what is the quickest route to turn professional rugby league into NFL?”.

Annesley slams Warriors sponsor over 'cheating of the highest order' bunker rant: 'No comment could be worse'

Yeh, let’s start fining sponsors. What could possibly go wrong.

Annesley slams Warriors sponsor over 'cheating of the highest order' bunker rant: 'No comment could be worse'

Griffin is the caretaker coach. It’s clearly not working with only 2 wins and running equal last place after 10 rounds… but why would anyone leave a job at another club to take over as short term caretaker? StG need to get on with the job of securing the best coaching team for 2024 and for sustained success, and let the world know when it’s confirmed. Hook’s instruction should be to pick and stick with the best spine combination, and enjoy the rest of the season with no pressure. StG can’t drop any lower on the ladder than their current position (equal last), and no NRL club will want to hire Griffin as head coach in the future – so where is the pressure? Nothing to lose now for Griffin, might as well enjoy the remainder of 2023 season and so long as the team works hard in defence, give them a licence to play a bit of footy. What’s the worst that could happen?

Buyer’s remorse: Ten NRL contracts that may end in tears of disappointment

With 2 wins and now equal last place with the Tigers there should be no more pressure on Griffin. He cannot reasonably expect his contract to be renewed. Griffin won’t walk and should not walk. He is contracted to end of season and is unlikely to pick up another NRL head coach contract. He now has the opportunity to take a few risks and try to get some joy out of the remainder of the 2023 season. What’s the downside for Hook if he tries something and it doesn’t work out… it’s the players at risk now – they should all want to show the world they are worth retaining.

Yeah, extend the coach’s contract before another club poaches him…

I thought he did play for the All Blacks, but couldn’t secure a regular or starting role.
