Is it as bad as someone saying “they can bowl a bit”. Almost trying to justify this player who’s primary skill isn’t good enough to get them into the team (see M Marsh, Labushagne & now Stoinis).

Australia don't need an Ashes all-rounder

Carey should be batting 7 then you can slide everyone up 1 place except for Maxwell who would go to 5 and leave Stoinis at 6. Not sure why Starc, Halzewood & Cummins were all rested for this ODI series, makes no sense.

There are two vastly different Shaun Marshes playing for Australia

If cricket is going to survive then 50 over cricket needs to bite the bullet. 4/5 day cricket and T20 are so far apart that you could have specialist players for each format without muddying the waters.

Cricket’s glory years were between 1979 & 2008 when only 2 formats of the game dominated the calendar, unfortunately with 3 the product (TV speak) has become diluted.

If Rocky Balboa can change, so can cricket

Are these tallies for wickets taken while playing in the same matches or just their career figures? Bit pointless if it’s the former.

Jimmy Anderson and Stuart Broad poised to set an impressive record

Time to do what Warner did to learn about reverse swing. No not sandpaper (which was Bancroft’s idea), rather requesting the services of Virender Sehwag. They played IPL together at Delhi back in 2009-2013 and Sehwag took Warner under his arm as a mentor. Since then Warner has perfected the art of throwing the ball back to the keeper on the bounce to scuff up one side then shine the life out of the other side, hence why he moved fielding positions from point to mid off. The tape on the fingers may have helped but I reckon this was classic misdirection.

On a side note I strongly believe the ICC need to change their ball tampering laws to allow teams to achieve reverse swing easier. Before play the umpires would check the players pockets & finger nails then let the condition of the ball become the captains responsibility. If the players want to take a risk and potentially ruin their ball then let them but the fielding side really need something back after batsman have been given flatter pitches, bigger bats and shorter boundaries.

Reverse swing: Australia must restore reputation using dark arts

So neither Hohns or Langer know who told Maxwell not to play county cricket. Either Chappell is holding a smoking gun or they genuinely don’t like him.

Hohns & Chappell need the boot ASAP.

Justin Langer furious over Glenn Maxwell questions

This is why it’s baffling that Labuschagne is still in the team/was picked to begin with (not that he should’ve been given a baggy green in the first place). Pukovski is a different story, he’ll be going to the UK IMO but he most likely for the experience. He’ll probably be able to cement his place in the side with a couple of centuries then piling on the runs in that back half of the shield season.

As the Ashes loom, how will selectors weigh runs against Sri Lanka?

You can’t start the BBL while the tests are still going as it just will not work. Jan/Feb should be reserved for the BBL and let the shield run at the same time as all the tests. Otherwise the schedule is no different than it is now.

Also, we simply cannot afford to have white ball internationals on at the same time as the shield so I agree with this point.

Fixing the Australian cricket schedule

Common sense and valid reasoning aren’t welcome here…

Three changes confirmed in new-look Australian squad to play Sri Lanka

Khawaja’s biggest weakness is still spin so he should be batting as high as possible

Three changes confirmed in new-look Australian squad to play Sri Lanka

How do you justify Marnus getting a gig in the first place? It’s way too easy to say “we’ll keep him because he’s the incumbent”. Hohns trotted that line out for the Marsh boys on numerous occasions and I see the same thing happening with Labuschagne.

“Joe Burns has had strong performances in first-class cricket this season, and we believe he can contribute strongly if given the chance in the series.”

Amazing to think Joe Burns has suddenly come into form since before the India series, oh the irony. Maybe these crooks are finally admitting their mistakes, but then we see that Labuschange is still in the squad.

Handscomb is stiff in my opinion. Head & especially Labuschagne are lucky these selectors don’t like Maxwell.

It’s baffling that an organisation the size of Cricket Australia can get such an important position wrong. Playing for your country is the game’s highest honour yet Hohns & Chappell have turned the test side into a pseudo-development team.

Chappell & Pat Howard are also responsible for grooming players in underage sides as a pathway to the test team, which in turn has completely devalued the Sheffield Shield.

The wizards of Aus: Why the selectors must go

jbinnie – would you happen to know how many games are say, sub 7500 crowds. On an international standard the A-League crowd figures aren’t as made out so I believe sub 7500 is a better measure.

It's time the FFA reconsidered its 'metrics'

Amazing to think Head was picked in the test side due to his performances in ODIs yet now he can’t even get in the squad. More mixed messages as usual.

Baffling that they think Stanlake can bowl more than 4 consistent overs in a match.

Australia make plenty of surprising changes in ODI squad to face India

get ready for Nathan Coulter-Nile!

Are Australia's bowlers overrated?

I’d have White over S Marsh at the minute. How many chances should 1 bloke get?

What would Australia XI vs Australia A look like?

Too be fair his record down the order isn’t too flash either. Lucky to be picked in the first place but we have to remember the brain surgeons who are making these decisions.

Marnus Labuschagne officially Australia's new no.3 batsman

I think this tweet shows it best. Most of the current top 6 should be focusing on white ball and leave the big boy cricket to players like Burns and Maxwell, i.e. proven performs in the breeding ground of Australian test cricketers. Sheffield Shield numbers have worked for 120+ years, not Greg Chappell’s pathway system.

Australia isn't playing its best team

I reckon ball management has a part to play here. Since Warner was dumped in RSA we haven’t been able to produce any reverse swing. Say what you will about what he asked Bancroft to do but he knew the secret to getting the ball to reverse (hopefully a legal one).

Another Test selection embarrassment after Australia's Melbourne meltdown

Honestly I’m surprised Maxwell hasn’t done that already. He must really want a spot in the test side again.

Another Test selection embarrassment after Australia's Melbourne meltdown

All he’s good for is clearing the front leg and launching the ball into the stands. I’ll happily eat my words if he’s a performing FC cricketer in 3 years time but he hasn’t even played an FC game yet.

Math isn’t easy for WA residents. As they say, they’re more than 3 hours behind.

Another Test selection embarrassment after Australia's Melbourne meltdown

Yep, that’s how I know he’s no good. Take the blinkers off champ.

Another Test selection embarrassment after Australia's Melbourne meltdown

There’s a fair bit we can pick apart here. Firstly, if you’re picked to bat in the top 6 then scoring runs is your first priority and if you can bowl that’s a bonus. Secondly, Maxwell is in our top 5 bats but hasn’t been given the chance to show it at the next level. He has the second highest FC average in the country of the players available. Thirdly, if Lyon is “so good” then why do we need a dedicated 5th bowler at all? India don’t have one and they’re doing just fine, and we’re playing on the exact same pitches that they are.
