Bit of a step up from testicles & eyeballs.
Love that “Plaquage Cathedrale” phase, they will be using that in the Wrestling calls soon.

A Wallaby grand slam? Don't make me laugh

The French always have quality loose forwards so will be good to see some new faces with the injuries you mentioned.
Who is this Tolofua bloke who got done for dangerous play? He must have gone close to murdering someone as French provinical rugby would have to be one of the toughest gigs in World Rugby. It is pretty much no holds barred, literally.

A Wallaby grand slam? Don't make me laugh

Probably highlights that at the heart of the matter rugby is a team game. While individuals can shine team success goes a long way to shaping perceptions of how good the individual is or was.
As you say Jerry from 1999 to 2004 or 2005 Aust did well against the AB’s and since we have done poorly.

Is Richie McCaw the greatest rugby player ever?

I think it would be fair to say that as a directt competitor over a number of test matches George Smith matched or bettered McGaw regularly.
If in 2005 or 2006 you said who was better McGaw or Smith? it would have been a livelly debate however with McGaw longevity and recent deeds it is a one way argument.

Is Richie McCaw the greatest rugby player ever?

They are going to have a 12 hour coverage of the grass growing at the MCG.
AFL 360 & On the Couch are rippers. Time to review the Foxtel contract and punt 504.
Put it in the diary to connect again in March next year.

Fox Footy the most impressive thing in 2012 season

Looks like we will know around the 18th November.
Apparently the reason why the Titans are being kept alive is that if they go down the NRL cannot delievr the product promised under contract.

A way forward for rugby in Australia

NRL & AFL get the $$$$’s precisely because they have the structure that you propose. However try as they might both codes cannot grow the game beyond Australia in any meaningful way.
Rugby is a different beast with it’s strength being the international appeal and as such has grown from the provincal sides and has been very much the focus of the administration. As such the only money that rugby gets is from the Super 15 & International arenas.
While a ITM / Currie Cup style program might well be the best way to develop players the problem is that you would go broke in the process and lose the top talent along the way. The fact is that Australian Rugby uses all it money on paying the Wallabies, JON salary and a top up for a few of the Super 15 sides. There is simply no money for a third tier and your living in lala land if you think more dollars will come from broadcasting. Local rugby has not had a TV deal worth a penny for 30 years and that is unlikely to change.

A way forward for rugby in Australia

There are injuries from all sides and hopefully you would be right that all those brumbies would be selected however I would suggest not. The point I was making was not anti Waratah it was that the selectors are not selecting on form and as such it is sending the wrong message,

Cheika favourite to be named NSW coach

Not a chance of the Waratahs getting the trophy.
The person best placed to help the Waratahs is Robbie Deans and the Australian selectors. Until they send a message to the Waratah players, and by extension the other Australian teams, that Wallaby selection is tied to performing during the Super 15 the Waratahs will continue to struggle.
I for one think it is an absolute disgrace that the Brumbies who arguably where the best performing Australian team can only have 2 people in the Wallabies, McCabe & Hooper.

Cheika favourite to be named NSW coach

Coaches press conferences are nothing more than referee bashes.
The coaches, and it usually the ones from the more successful sides, give the refs a serve if that win and an absolute pasting if they lose. One thing I cannot understand is they always mention the penalty count if they are on the wrong side of it. It’s as if the referee job is too make sure that both sides receive the same amount of penalties in a game irrespective of the actual reasons for the penalties.
One other factor is that a player is ra0erly sent off during a game, it is always placed “on report”. I think the referee could get a bit of respect back from coaches and players if they made better use of the sent off and sin bin. Trouble is that to do so they need the support of the NRL commission not just Bill Harrigan and it seems the commission seems to side with the clubs and coaches every time.

The ref bashing needs to stop

There has been a lot of talk this year about how Gold Coast will be good in a few years time. The trouble is that by then the players will have lost 50 to 60 games with a dozen or so wins. It will be hard to instil a winners confidence in them after a myriad of losses. I certainly hope they blossom however a dose of realism means it is by no merans a certainity.
Add to that the fact that the Gold Coast has been a grave yard for professional football teams for the last 20 years. Although it must be said that the AFL has funded and will continue to fund for the long term.

Gold Coast Suns hold all the aces

Will miss watching him play. I did not realise he was 33 and good to see him go out while still at the top of his game.
That run and toe poke he did in the grand final to setup a goal at a cucial time of he game highlighted the fact why he was such a quality player, being able to pull off the big plays on the biggest stage when the match was there to be won. You can’t say he won the game however I reckon Geelong would have struggled to have three premierships over the last 5 years if Scarlett wasn’t at the back.

Cats' retiree Scarlett hailed as AFL great

Keeping the talent concentrated is the way to go from both a business and football point of view. Adding more teams to Super 15 will add more expense for very little revenue. AFL & NRL get big money from TV for two reasons, the number of quality games they put on and the fact that there are a lot of local derbies. Expanding and diluting talent works against both of these principles and hence devalue the potential dollars.
A case in point is the Rebels and unfortunately next year the Western Force (without Nathan Sharp & David Pocock). This year it was obvious that the Australian conference was the weakest and that will probably be highlighted next year.
From a quality of football viewpoint if you have expansion the new franchises chase a few big name players, re Rebels Beale & O’Connor, and being at a “weaker” club they do not play thir best football. So in a very real way the expansion is hindering the Wallaby cause. The counter arument is that we have the talent to support 5 teams however from the onfield performances to date that argument has no support.

Super Rugby: Is expansion really the anwer?

For the last round all the talk was about how this has been the most even competition in years and now it is who can beat Hawthorn?
The Hawks are in red hot form with a few of the others, notably Adelaide & Collingwood, losing form at the wrong end of the season.
No doubt that West Coast Sydney & Freo could all give Hawthorn a touch up on the last Saturday in September.

Can anyone actually beat Hawthorn?

Exactly the thinking of vast majority of parents, Privte schools are not there to unearth potential wallabies, the fact that thye do is a benefical by product.
The fact is that schools have a very different agenda from the ARU and are wholely independent. The ARU would be better off concentrating their efforts in club land where they can at least get some traction and use a “carrott and stick” approach to inflence outcomes.

Private School comps could be Aussie rugby's third tier

There is a very easy solution and that is too make a player ineligible for Super 15/ Wallaby selection unless he has played 12 club ganes over the past 12 months.
You are right in that the standard of the club games would improve, you see it at finals time in Brisbaen club rubgy now, the Super 15 players are back in club land and it lifts their club as well as the opposition.
Also blieve that club rugby at it’s best is a more enjoyable spectacle than the crap dished up by th Super 15 this year.

Grassroots rugby needs a boost from ARU

Apparently you have to commit murder to be sent off in an NRL match these days.
Trouble is the referees are never supported by the ARL and get an absolute schlacking if they award more penalties to one side than another during a game let alone if they send some one off. So the most they ever do is place someone on report and avoid the issue.
Imagine the bitchin’ and moaning from the coaches if a few players got sent off in the first half of a match. It would be priceless.

Judiciary turns cold shoulder to tough new era

Look at what is delivered a Super 15 comp of one round with 5 local teams and finals and a few internationals.
Against NRL & AFL of 16 to 18 teams in two rounds plus finals. All either local or at the very least Australian based.
I am not a TV executive but looking at the productsI would think rugby would be lucky to get 15 to 20% of the other codes.
Fact is that you can come up with all kinds of ideas but don’t expect the ARU to implement as they simply don’t have the resources.

Grassroots rugby needs a boost from ARU

A winner takes all prize. Smacks very much of performance based pay so I doubt any of the current crop of Wallabies will be showing up.

Grassroots rugby needs a boost from ARU

Last year Colllingwood lost form coming into the finals and it looks the same this year.
No doubt they can beat the better sides but not without all guns firing and that is not the case atm. It would be a brave man putting his money on the pies in September.

We can beat anyone, says Buckley

One of the good things about sports betting is the billion $ the NRL got from Channel 9. A fair chunk of that billion will come from Sports Bet, Tom Waterhouse etc in the form of advertising.

Is there a good side to sports betting?

You have to stick with the 22 on game day. It’s harsh and admittedly some bad luck stories but where does it end, a player with 10 games during the regular season, or is it 12?
Do you think a player who plays all year then misses the GF would feel any better with a medal? It would be a token.

Should entire AFL lists get premiership medals?

Hardly surprising is it when you see the advertising from betting shops on sporting broadcasts. The billion dollar the codes are getting from television has to come from somewhere.
As for this indivduals case of being a non contracted cricketer betting on football matches, can’t see the problem although not very smart if he is trying to get new contract. Basic fact is that a lot of professional sportsmen are in their early 20’s eaning good cash want to be doing what all their mates do and that is have a few beers and a punt. The clubs and governing bodies can make all the rules they want but unlikely it’s going to stop.

Do players off contract deserve duty of care?

Does form count for anything.
The Tahs dominate and the Brumbies get nothing.
Australia deserves a flogging if that is our selection ppolicy.

Wallabies squad announced for opening Bledisloe Test

I have two young boys playing junior rugby in Brisbane cost $450 for the season for the two of them to play. Apparently a fair bit of that is kicked upstairs to the ARU so with 14,000 juniors in Qld the money they invest is pretty much coming from the players rather than any great debeloment funds from the ARU. They also play league, that costs $70 per season per player, more games and they get a free pair of shorts.
Like the thoughts of Rob above lighten up the S15 squads and have the club comps as the selection base. Also give the Rebels & Force a chance to recruit from Brisbane & Sydney comps as God knows they will need all the help they can get if the Australian conference of the S15 is going to be taken seriously.
