It is all about getting into position to win this open as two or three bad holes and you could be out of it. I watched last night and I have never seen a tournament where so many players take unplayable and cop the one stroke penalty. Also looked at the field and seemed to be a number of the top players from the US tour absent. It certainly is a different style of course and as the US tour is so lucrative I wonder if they would prefer to stay home.
Interesting to see the past winners at this course all top class players.

Last night could have been history-making for Adam Scott

Your right about the fatigue, how fat is TPN.
The Wallaby selectors should take a bit of the blame. They should be supporting the Super 15 coaches by saying to the players if you don’t play well for your state team you don’t get picked for the Wallabies.
Unfortunately the NSW forwards who have been outplayed all season still dominate the Wallaby pack, go figure?

Under fire Foley is on borrowed time

Pure genius, get the focus off Wallabies and Super 15 and give club rugby a shot in the arm.
The only way Australia can possibly support 5 Super 15 sides of any quality is to promote talent which logically is going to be found in the NSW and Qld club sides and to a lesser extent ACT, Vic & WA.
The article alluded to the Reds success of recent years and the fact is that they played and supported young players like Cooper, Genia etc when no one else wanted them and sticking with them. A bit of the credit for that should go to Phil Mooney the coach before McKenzie. Qld did not “buy” any marquee players but rather discards from other states ie Robinson, Samo. Contrast that to the Waratahs who spend their money on Elsom, Barnes , Mitchell all Qld players. Not only have they not got much value for these players they are depriving the home grown players of a chance at a higher level.

SPIRO: How I would fix Australian rugby

SPIRO: How I would fix Australian rugby

If that is the 8 there is no doubt that a team from the bottom 4 could get up to the flag.

Will someone win the flag from outside the Top Four?

Nonu has my vote. Love watching him play.

SBW leaves as rugby's best No.12: Cooper

It’s a pity that a nation’s test jersey looks like something a 12 yo would wear to a skate park.
The best look for the Australian strip was the one they wore during the early 90’s. It would be good to get back to that one.
I am not naive enough to think it will happen, just wish it would.

Let's make tight jerseys a thing of the past

The Crusaders are a team that manage to win a lot of the tight games. Also they seem to get better later in the tournament so are always a good chance come finals time.
A point you have probably neglected is the earthquake effect, they have had a hard two seasons in terms of travel and disruptions that have been taking their toll on the players, especially a lot of their top line talent. The Chiefs have had a great season and from a spectator point of view I would much prefer to watch a NZ derby than an Australian one, the quality of play is so much better.

Have the Crusaders lost their mojo to the Chiefs?

The conference system is a natural extension of the Rugby policy of expanding and establishing new teams (I hate the word franchise).
Aust, NZ & SA are three separate markets and are not all equal and it is clear that Australia is lagging the SA & NZ ability to support 5 quality Super 15 teams. It could quite possibly get a lot worse next year with the Force as Nathan Sharpe retires and if Pocock leaves they will really struggle to be competitive.

The wildcard system that could bite NZ on the posterior

Probably a function of Australia having one too many sides in the Super 15, I reckon Australian rugby would be better served by having 4 stronger and not spreading the talent too thin.

Super Rugby season gets even more unpredictable

No doubt Read is the best No 8 in world rugby by a country mile. When is he due back for the Crusaders?
Should be a great finish to the Super 15, unfortunately can’t see an Australian side winning the comp, though with so many possibilities for the finals draw it does become a bit of a lottery if a side that has a home final loses in week one.

Super Rugby season gets even more unpredictable

I think you got to the heart of the matter by reference to the Wallabies representation by Waratah players. Seems that the players know they can under perform at Super 15 level yet still be rewarded by Wallaby selection. It is a real cancer on the game when this happens, performance does not seem to matter. A few earlier posts say that the Waratah players play better when they are playing with better players so they deserve to be selected is pure fantasy, does that mean that better performing Brumbies/Reds/Force/Rebels players are incapable of doing better if they where selected? There is a place for loyalty at the selection table but it cannot be the overriding factor, at some stage form has to be considered.
While a lot of the talk seems to be centred at the NSW board & coaching staff the players themselves should be accepting 90% of the blame, split the remaining 10% any way you like.

Foley between a rock and a hard place

Like the idea of a drop goal, no place kick. Also a shot clock like the AFL, take too long and it’s play on.
One thing I noticed after watching some old late ’90s Super the other day was the time now being wasted in setting scrums. It takes an eternity, slows down the games and allows fat slow blokes who cannot run or pass a chance to play rather than be sitting in the stand where belong.

Dear John: contentious penalties are affecting results

The contribution of players with Pacific Island Heritage, in both league & union, has been enormous and tends to be getting bigger. It would be good to see the codes acknowledge that rather than just say the players are Australian or NZ.

WIZ: Hey Origin, leave our kids alone

Sign up for 4 years. Get the flick after 4 months and cop $800K for your trouble.
Is ripping up money part of the new commissions charter?

Gallop exits but the challenges remain

Dangerous place to be flag favourite.
So far it has been Hawthorn – Carlton – North Melbourne (not a misprint) – now Collingwood.
No doubt that this is the most even competition in years so the trick will be the coach who has his team hitting peak form in late September. I reckon last year Collingwood where slipping in September while Geelong got better. Triumph by Scott over Malthouse, let’s see how Buckley fares.

Buckley the silent killer as Collingwood hit stealth mode

Head says Crusaders but I would have thought Highlanders would be shorter than $4.20.
Might have to have a crack at those odds, then all up into the Hurricanes to beat the tahs.

Super Rugby round 15 preview panel

Looking forward to this as two teams that are playing the best rugby to watch.
Battle of the loose forwards will be good, 3 or 4 of the best going around in world rugby at the moment.

Coach wants Crusaders at full throttle

No doubt he is the number 1 hooker in NZ.
Would be good to see him play on for another year or two. As long as his form holds why wouldn’t you pick him.

No World Cup hangover for All Black Hore

Good on you David, your Operation Neville was successful now onto Operation Holmes.
It’s a good policy to take on young talented players showing good form. Also a good No 10 is a rare gem and has too be developed.

Wallaby selectors have another chance to recognise Zack Holmes

NSW and Paul Gallen do themselves no favours by the constant sniping at the ref. While a captain can question decisions a good captain picks and chooses his battles rather than straight criticism and half smart comments as a constant rate all game.
I think keeping their mouths shut would be a lot more benefical than an independent analysis.

Are NSW and their fans really whingers?

Gallen is a good player but certainly not captain material, bitching and moaning all night and making half smart comments to the ref are not the way to lead a side. If he carries on like that it is little wonder the 50/50 calls go against you. It doesn’t make it right however as anyone who has played footy knows if you rubbish the ref all game it rarely does your cause any good.

Thurston says Jennings had brain snap

What about Jennings?

Myles surprised at man of the match award

Agree with all except the sin bin.
No doubt that Jennings deserved his time off, can’t understand your comment about the call having such a large effect on the game, isn’t that precisely the point of sending a player off, either for the game or in the bin?

Five hit ups: the talking points from State of Origin one

Can’t understand the automatic selection of Robinson at loosehead.
He certainly has not been standing out as the form prop of the current crop.
Moore is definitely the number 1 hooker, the scrum also goes better with him on the field.

Who should partner Horwill in the second row?
