“Gary Ablett Jr. – AFL (This is trully a nothing sport with little skill level and soft) ”
Interestingly, this is not the very best demonstration of your ignorance.
I would think that you not knowing who Dani Samuels is would take the proverbial cake.
Vote for The Roar's Australian Sportsperson of 2009
Buckley had included an option to rectangularise the MCG without discussing it with either the MCG or AFL. It would have put the MCG out of action for over two thirds of the season.
The government commissioned a report on the World Cup with that option included as a basic assumption.
Buckley only backtracked on that option when Demetriou blew the whistle on it (and he was right to do it).
Michael d is correct in writing that cancelling the season was a possibility under this option.
Over half of all AFL games are played at the MCG and Etihad combined – if one is out for 16+ weeks and the other for 10 weeks – that’s pretty much the season done and dusted.
Helpful suggestions from people that games can be played at Albury and Mildura are idiotic.
Demetriou was right to question World Cup impact
Actually, I wasn’t necessarily trying to say that there’s always an upset – I was really relating 2010 more to 2002 where there were a few new faces amongst the quarter finalists.
And just as two big names missed out in 2002 (or three counting Portugal), I reckon we will have a similar attrition rate in 2010.
But I’m not saying that is the norm – in fact one could argue that the reverse is true.
Examining Group B in the 2010 World Cup
I’m not sure what happens in the Northern states, but in the Southern states cricket and Australian football have always shared ovals.
MCG says it's in the dark over World Cup speculation
I actually thought he was referring to these sorts of comments:
* the AFL and all AFL fans are myopic and insular, no one knows the game exists
* FIFA doesn’t know who ALF is and could not care what ALF thinks
* Demetriou has ruined the bid – and we were a sure thing before he got involved, etc
Do we actually deserve to host a Football World Cup?
Punter
but it’s still a big ask to cancel a full AFL season just to attend a party.
MCG says it's in the dark over World Cup speculation
Whether you play Australian Football or korfball, you are still part of humanity.
Let us all celebrate that fact.
At the end of the day, I remain a humanist.
Do we actually deserve to host a Football World Cup?
Ken – these are five of the 12 stadiums proposed:
Etihad (a late comer admittedly, which is causing all the fuss)
MCG
Carrara
Adelaide Oval
Subi
that’s five ovals.
The point is – Australia was never really in a position to mount a serious bid.
Do we actually deserve to host a Football World Cup?
Why blame the AFL?
Why not blame the incompetence of Lowy and Buckley?
Why not blame whoever planned the new rectangular stadium in Melbourne?
Why not blame the idiot who thought we could actually bid for 2018?
Yes people – some idiot actually thought we could bid for 2018!
MCG says it's in the dark over World Cup speculation
Quite simply – Buckley and Lowy should have done a better job of it.
Buckley has been caught out telling porkies – and with some government connivance to boot – if that’s the way people want to run things – they reap the harvest that they sow.
People want to continue thinking that you can have the MCG out for a full footy season, and Etihad out for 10 weeks, and everything will be hunky dory.
Well, it won’t.
And with the ongoing denigration of our local game that I keep reading on the Roar, and on 442 – I have zero sympathy.
I’ve been watching the WC on TV since 1978 – and I can continue doing the same – no problem.
MCG says it's in the dark over World Cup speculation
Sorry – but your post is illogical.
You open by saying tht the AFL would not have been playing at Etihad anyway (not sure why you say that) – then you close by saying it was a great marketing opportunity – how can it be if they are not playing during the WC?
Do we actually deserve to host a Football World Cup?
Mushi
you’re spot on – I just double checked – I too had been wondering how on Earth they came up with a 20% ROI.
Do we actually deserve to host a Football World Cup?
Also – a group that had Nigeria and Sth Korea finish on top of Argentina and Greece would be interesting.
Maybe not in this group – but we will definitely see one or two groups go in that sort of direction, guaranteed.
Examining Group B in the 2010 World Cup
Thanks Das – I’m glad you’ve picked Sth Korea – at one stage I thought I had written them up too much!
Examining Group B in the 2010 World Cup
Dan Silverstone mentioned it in the Age – but I have seen it mentioned it before, at least a month ago, when we first discovered that it couldn’t be used for the WC.
All the way through – it’s been the same story – can’t be done – there is something very fishy about the story to be honest.
Fear and loathing is ruling Australian sports
MC has kindly suggested that if the FFA put up the $150 mill – all will be forgiven.
Fear and loathing is ruling Australian sports
Many have skirted round this issue, trying to paint Demetriou as the bad guy – when Buckley and the FFA, with Government approval, was trying to pull a swifty here – get it through without the knowledge of either the MCG or the AFL.
Good on Demetriou for blowing the whistle on it.
MCG says it's in the dark over World Cup speculation
Yes – but NZers may do something seperate to celebrate ANZAC day – that’s the point.
Fear and loathing is ruling Australian sports
That last question is an interesting one.
Buckley says they just had it in there as an option – not a serious one.
Oh really??!!
And yet the report done for Government includes this option as one of its recommendations.
Just another case of FFA obfuscation.
MCG says it's in the dark over World Cup speculation
Only one sporting activity matters on ANZAC Day.
Fear and loathing is ruling Australian sports
It doesn’t suit a politician to get the true costs and benefits out there (and the post-event studies are only ever completed years later).
It’s far better to mutter things like: big event, put Australia on the map, etc
FFA's World Cup bid lacks transparency
