Apparently McCullum has regretted his Murli appeal and apologised. It seems it might have been his Greg Chappell moment, within the laws against but maybe not the spirit type thing.

Personally, I think the Bairstow case is different. Leaving the crease while the ball is “active” is a well known risk and is taught to juniors at an early age. Indeed, I doubt a weekend would go by in any Australian city where a junior player was not given out on this law.

I have no doubt he would average 5-10 more runs in today’s game.

No doubt Rellum. I remember during the Windies touring team of 84/85 an innings I saw Border play that I have never forgotten.

It was a day night ODI at the SCG. Windies batted first and set up a reasonable total. Our turn to bat and as usual we were about 3 for 27 off about 10 overs (I’m going on memory alone here so forgive me if the fact checked numbers are slightly different).

I’d just knocked off work and set myself up on the fence. Border strode to the crease with his team in deep trouble again. He got down to business and belted about 124 runs against the fiercest night attack you could imagine. Australia won the game.

If AB was playing today, I can say with confidence his Test batting average would be well north of 60. He played against some of the best fast bowling attacks ever seen and didn’t have the benefit of the large bats and smaller roped in fields we see today.

I recall hearing about the batting prodigy when he was still at North Sydney Boys High and playing first grade for Mosman in his mid teens. He was always going to be something special.

I tend to agree Boo. The Cats backline resembled the cast of Land of the Giants,

Footy Fix: Sure, the Swans' shocking kicking butchered a win... but the Cats blew it just as badly

… New South Wales side have won one game despite, on paper, having the far superior playing squad.
Great article but I have to take issue with the sentence above. Ever since Origin began, the mainstream media have an unhealthy tendency to over rate the NSW sides. Apart from a few short periods in the mid 80s and early 2000s, I think Qld is conversely underrated by the media.

Cook showed his class last night as a person too. Playing in an unfamiliar position gainsay quality opposition, he didn’t stand a chance.

Blues player ratings: Time for legend to call it quits, Luai no good without Cleary, why was Cam Murray barely used?

No blue and gold bias on show. Moses can hold his head high, he stood out in a well beaten team.

I sadly and with some sympathy for the umpires agree with your assessment. i was there also and the umpiring was over fussy. Some of those free kicks for “high contact” were a joke. I didn’t detect a bias towards either team but the AFL is in a hole with the modern status of the tackle.

Footy Fix: Their season is all but cooked - but gutsy, fierce Swans still have the brightest of futures ahead

Yeah, I’ve thought about this too, often. Even more inexplicable in my view, is how the Power allowed the Crows to run rampant in Q4 of the showdown.

I’ve just put it down to the vagaries of the human condition and sport, although I don’t expect it to happen again against either team in 2023. They may lose but they won’t be belted.

Footy Fix: 14 minutes, 29 seconds, six goals - how 2023's most brutal burst saw Port obliterate the Cats

It seems support for the Cats over the Power comes down to the form of Hawkins and Cameron. If they fire, the Power are belted.

The Roar's AFL expert tips and predictions Round 14: Get set for another terrible tipping round!

Definitely one of the more interesting articles I’ve read in The Roar over the last month or so. Coaching is a complex business with more levers that once pulled have all sorts of unintended consequences.
One word of caution, while Port look attractive at the moment, I keep thinking of the belting that Collingwood gave them and their inexplicable loss to the Crows after leading the points half way through Q4. Their effort against their upcoming match with the Cats will tell us a lot more about Port.
Josh Carr was brought in to stiffen up the coaching and puts more steel into the group. As a former Power player with a tough reputation, he appeared to be a logical fit. So far the evidence suggests, he has worked out as hoped.
However, as AdamDilligafThompson has already mentioned, separating association and causation is not a clear science in football. Dropping Burton and Jonas (who you admit weren’t in form) may have Hinkley’s fingerprints on it because Ken realised that he had to break his own style and risk everything because another mid season finish and he’d be out of a job. In other words, Ken had nothing to lose.
The addition of Horne Francis, the continuing rise of Butters and Rozee and the consistency of Finlayson, SPP and Drew (among others) have all played a role in Power’s form.
But back your central point, I’d like to think that injecting Carr into the coaching staff has emboldened Ken to challenge his natural style and go for broke. Thanks for the informative article.

Who is really coaching Port Adelaide?

Oops, my rookie mistake. In that case, move Simpson on now.

TOM MORRIS: Adam Simpson is exhausted and the Eagles are a rabble. It's time for an amicable split

Let me play devil’s advocate. Let’s say WC ignore your advice and stick with Simpson. What does that future look like? Maybe they keep losing games but the points differential gradually improves (it surely can’t get any worse).

They could finally get serious about ripping up contacts on experienced players who are either injury prone or poor performers. The losses continue in 2024 but they have some close wins too. At the end of season 24, they have an out of contract coach and an improving team. Possibly saving themselves a couple of million bucks.

Oops!

Footy Fix: Historically bad Eagles are even more pathetic than you think... and it's more than just injuries causing it

I don’t like to put the slipper into a team when they are down but surely their list management needs to be examined too.
I’m not close to the club but I am happy for WC fans to enlighten me, My perception is that the club has hung onto injury prone veterans too long rather than moving them on and seeking interstate talent. Surely they could have seen Kennedy’s retirement looming, the continuing concerns over Ni Nat’s chronic injuries as just two examples.
Additionally, some of their most experienced players showed drops in form before the injury tsunami hit. This list reorganisation should have stated after the 2019 premiership flag,

Footy Fix: Historically bad Eagles are even more pathetic than you think... and it's more than just injuries causing it

The problem is the rules around the “tackle” need to be rewritten. Because players aren’t permitted to take below the hips, they find themselves having to wrap the arms up which lessens the tackled players ability to protect themselves.

If Butler was allowed to make contact around the hips he could have made an effective tackle and the risk to the tackled player would be reduced.

I don’t need to know individual salaries but I think the salary cap balance sheet for ALL clubs should be visible. Broken down to soft cap, hard cap and ten year player exemptions.

AFL player salaries should be made public

I’d forgotten Nic Nat was even a registered player. How many games has he played in the last three seasons?

I agree with Scott’s assessment but it is the inconsistency that is the problem. Two identical tackles and player A is summoned and Player B is ignored.

I support your comment, as a Power supporter it makes sense. I am a little troubled by Georgiades form pre ACL injury. He doesn’t seem to have developed since 2021.

I’ve heard some with the opinion he may not be a part of Port’s future.

Footy Fix: Rapid, ruthless and relentless - the match-winning nine seconds that summed up a famous Power win

I can’t understand why it’s taking so long to reach an outcome. I also can’t understand why someone from the AFL doesn’t explain the reasons behind the delay.

Justice delayed is justice denied. If there are procedural problems that can’t be resolved then the case should be thrown out and no adverse findings should be recorded against the accused.

I don’t have any strong feelings one way or the other on the mid season draft.

However, I do want to pick up on one point.

In fifty years of watching Rugby League I have never heard the suggestion that a player signing for another club mid season has led to a deterioration in their desire to win for their current team.

Should there be a mid-season trade period in the AFL?

It’s not the Ginnivan rule that irritates me. It’s when umpires award a free kick when there is a ground ball scramble and a mid fielder picks up the ball and uses his head as a drilling bore into the guts of an opponent who is trying to back away.

Constant rule changes have made umpiring in the AFL impossible - and the game is suffering
