In that case, move the swans game to the early slot. Then you have the QLD games back to back, and you also have back to back games for the SA teams and the WA teams. Saturday night FTA game has to be a good one, so it won’t be West Coast v St Kilda.

Saturday, September 5
Hawthorn versus Carlton, MCG, Early
Sydney Swans versus Gold Coast Suns, SCG, Early
Port Adelaide versus Fremantle, Adelaide Oval, Twilight AEST
Brisbane Lions versus Western Bulldogs, Gabba, Twilight
Geelong Cats versus Adelaide Crows, Simonds Stadium, Night
West Coast Eagles versus St Kilda, Domain Stadium, Night AEST

How the final round of the 2015 AFL season should unfold

Agree with your Friday and Sunday games. The only thing I’d change would be to move the Geelong-Adelaide game to a Saturday night slot and move the Brisbane-Bulldogs game to the Saturday twilight spot. Not only because the game in Geelong is the potential pick of the Saturday games so deserves prime time, but the higher ranked Bulldogs deserve the extra time to fly back from Brisbane.

Think it’s pointless arguing AR. Their arguments basically boil down to, we want a bigger rectangular stadium in Melbourne and it’s unfair that we have to play big events at the MCG or Etihad. Any valid economic arguments are just going to be seen as anti-football(soccer). No mention that the largest stadium in Sydney, which hosts all their major events like state of origin, NRL grand finals, bledisloe cups isn’t a purpose built rectangular stadium, but an olympic stadium that can host every sport.

If the article had of said that AAMI stadium should have been built bigger in the first place, then that is a different story (even though for games not involving Victory, 20,000 is more than big enough), but it is a complete waste upgrading the stadium.

AAMI Park needs to be upgraded to 40,000

AFL contribution to AO was $5 million more than FFA contributed to AAMI Park.

But I have no problem at all with the government funding AAMI Park. It helped get a super rugby team, and Melbourne needed a rectangular stadium that size.

You seem to be missing the point. I’m not against a 40,000 seat stadium in Melbourne, but increasing the size of AAMI by 10,000 is a complete waste of money. Size is perfectly fine for rebels, storm and city, and most of victory’s games. OK I get that you’d rather watch a Melbourne derby game in a rectangular stadium instead of Etihad, but the government would be irresponsible in increasing the size of AAMI or building another bigger rectangular stadium. For an event like the Liverpool game, you’d still need to use the MCG, or do we now need a 100,000 seat rectangular stadium?

AAMI Park needs to be upgraded to 40,000

Well they got AAMI PARK for nothing, so worth a shot.

AAMI Park needs to be upgraded to 40,000

Look I agree it would be nice if there was a big stadium that was specifically designed for soccer and rugby, but I disagree that Victoria needs it. The disadvantage that those sports face is that they play second fiddle to football and cricket in Victoria, but soccer and rugby can still be played (I know fans prefer closer seating) on cricket/football grounds.

Anyway, I went to the Liverpool game at the MCG and I plan to go to the state of origin at the MCG next year. As I said before, I don’t want taxpayers money being wasted on building a huge rectangular stadium when we don’t have to.

Maybe the FFA, ARU and NRL can pool their resources and build a stadium in Melbourne if there is that much demand. VFL/AFL built Waverley in the past and have invested in docklands to own outright. They also helped fund the Great Southern stand at the MCG for the AFL members and as part of the arrangement with the MCC to bring more football to the ground.

AAMI Park needs to be upgraded to 40,000

I’m glad the writer of this article is not in charge of our public funds. Just because AAMI park sells out occasionally, and events like Liverpool get over 90,000 at the MCG doesn’t mean the taxpayer should be wasting millions of dollars on increasing the size to 40,000. Etihad’s seats can be brought in for soccer and rugby, and although not ideal, it still better than wasting more money.

AAMI park is currently more than big enough for Rebels, Storm and City. Victory are able to technically sell it out, but that isn’t a bad thing. Decrease supply to increase demand.

Some of the arrogance from the soccer community over the use of stadiums is astounding. A few facts.

– The AFL can’t block FFA using the stadium over summer, and when they take control they won’t want to lose out on that revenue.
– Plenty of non AFL events are played over winter at Etihad, and sounds like the FFA stuffed up their dates.
– Instead of the FFA asking the AFL to reschedule, they could do so themselves and put the game on the Monday night if they wanted.
– For the world cup bid, the FFA had access to the MCG, which is better than Etihad anyway. The FFA and FIFA have no right to ask the AFL to shut down their entire comp because of the world cup.

AAMI Park needs to be upgraded to 40,000

I must correct you on Hawthorn getting lots of Friday night block busters. Although Hawthorn is involved in 7 Friday night games this year (which admitedly is good for sponsorship), Hawthorn is the home team in only one of these games, and that was against Fremantle. Thanks to the Tassie deal, the AFL make the Hawks host more than their fair share of interstate teams. Would rather Hawthorn play in fewer Friday night matches, if Hawthorn had more attractive home fixtures. Guess it’s all swings and roundabouts.

Once admired, the Swans are now despised

If they are going to move heart to lakeside stadium then they should have just brought in South Melbourne to begin with.

It would have been much better if the a league didn’t start a second Melbourne side and started a team from Geelong. At least a team from Geelong would represents something like WSW unlike heart who are just Melbourne 2, and Geelong would actually get a larger crowd than the heart currently get.

Might want to check some of your figures again. Adelaide has over 100k likes and Melbourne has over 30k.

Facebook proves the aura of the All Blacks

I’m from the age group of the premier league following the NBA as the “in” thing.

European football hypocrites and glory hunters

For many of us growing up on Aussie Rules or Rugby League in Australia, we started watching soccer because of the Premier League, not because of the old NSL as it was then. The NSL was more foreign than anything English. So I had a premier league team before I had an a league team, and never had a NSL team.

PNG is a third world country. A team there adds no value. Perth should be the next place to get a team, but the longer the delay, the more ground given to the force. Once Perth gets a new bigger stadium for the eagles and the dockers, it’ll be even harder starting up a new rugby league team.

NRL proving to be the anti-expansion league

If League can’t grow in Adelaide and Perth then fat chance of growing internationally.

Rugby league must grow internationally

The majority of the media in the UK is based in London, and Londoners generally don’t like Rugby League and much prefer Union.

Rugby league must grow internationally

More growth can be obtained in Australia than anywhere else, as a team in Perth and Adelaide will be joining the strongest comp and games are already on TV (well at least on Foxtel).

Rugby league must grow internationally

Rugby League needs to grow the game in Australia first, and get teams into Perth and Adelaide. Growing the game internationally shouldn’t be the main concern when the 4th and 5th biggest cities in Australia have no RL presence.

Rugby league must grow internationally

Let’s do everything to keep our traditions like the EPL, and have billionaire Americans, Russians and Arabs buy our clubs.

The AFL grows, but at what cost?

So you think there should be no team in Melbourne as well?

NRL to implement new stadium strategy

“whereas the Suns who had Draft picks thirteen, fifty-five, fifty-seven and fifty-eight don’t look as potent”

You are selectively using the facts here. You haven’t mentioned that the Suns traded their pick 2 for Jack Martin in the mini draft, as well as no mention that Jaeger O’Meara will be playing for the club in 2013, who probably would have been the Number 1 pick if eligible in this year’s draft, and is already the favourite for next years’ rising star award.

GWS or Suns to win the first flag?

Worst name in Australian sport has to be “Wests Tigers”. Couldn’t they have called them West Sydney Tigers or Western Tigers. Name just sounds terrible every time I hear it.

Also hate nicknames that have no relationship to the team name or don’t hold some significance for the region, “Brisbane Broncos” being an example. Why did they go with the American Bronco, instead of Australian Brumby? Bronco isn’t even a clever play on words with “Brisbane”. Same could be said about the “North Queensland Cowboys”. Does the NRL think it is the NFL.

Great team names: Singular, or plural best for fans?

No problem with players shrugging the tackle to break it, as long as it is then just play on. The other free kicks I hate at the moment are the number of push in the backs given. So many players getting tackled seem to just drop their knees, making the tackler fall on top of them.

Hawthorn, here's how to avoid tackles

Do you think it would have worked better if the second Melbourne side was a side that tried to represent Victoria? So play games in places like Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo and other regional centres, and then home games against Victory in Melbourne?

FFA must not be bold for boldness' sake

At least the Sydney expansion makes more sense, with the new team being based in the Western suburbs, than the way they did the Melbourne expansion.

Having Heart play at the same venue as Victory, means that they are both essentially fighting for the same market. (I know nine AFL clubs in Melbourne play at two stadiums, but only after 100 years of playing in their respective suburbs). So excuse my ignorance, but I still don’t really know who the Heart are supposed to represent, they even decided to call themselves Melbourne as well! If people liked soccer, they more than likely would have at least taken an interest in Victory when they entered, and it seems that Heart is just trying to capture those that didn’t like Victory for whatever reason. Victory’s crowds are still double the Heart’s, which are inflated with the two Derby games they get. So the A league has created one superclub and one average size club in Melbourne, instead of creating two big clubs in Melbourne from the start.

Say what you will about the big bash, but at least both Melbourne teams came in at the same time, with the added bonus of one team playing at the MCG and the other playing at Etihad, creating a clear difference between the two.
