Quote: “He was a fine assistant coach at Collingwood when they won the flag in 2010. He was well thought of by Mick Malthouse, but being a more than capable assistant doesn’t always mean you can cut it as a senior coach at AFL Level.” Unquote

Yep, that’s about the size of it. Aspirations don’t meet capabilities. The furnace that is the AFL coaches box is probably only for those who are equal to the task, sadly Mark is not. The road is littered with the debris of hopeful, or rather aspirant, elite level AFL coaches. This is just another tale of woe, and it won’t be the last.

Is it time to unleash the Demons and sack Neeld?

Good little vignette on Ken.

Ken Hinkley's journey to Port Adelaide

Yes, but maybe in denial?

Andrew Demetriou appeared to be confident in his response/s to this ‘circus’, and I would imagine that his words are heavily framed around future legal (definitely) arguments.

This is going to play out in the courts for: months/years?

James Hird's future far from clear

The article reads like a character reference, although, all the qualities outlined are those that I believed (and still do) about James Hird.

However, as Richard states: ‘The key question in my mind is, has anyone deliberately cheated? If so, then the punishment should be hard. If no, and if a transgression is accidental, then the response should be fairly measured.’ That is what is at the core of the code – AFL, and will take the judgement of Solomon to come up with a response that is seen to send a signal to all that the ‘game’ is larger than personalities, clubs, supporters.

If some of our ‘stars’ of the game have feet of clay, and that some supporters/sponsors et al may be absolutely ‘gutted’ by any allegations that prove to be true then for the greater good of the game strong, and maybe unpalatable decisions must be made.

That’s why we have management to make sometimes the hard decisions.

Who is James Hird?

Out of all of these ‘allegations’ whilst they still are allegations how in good sense can James Hird stand before his playing group and espouse any directives? When those as his audience will be probably thinking to themselves can we believe/trust him?

Hird should not stand down at Essendon

Yeah, apologies for not being clearer.

Hird should not stand down at Essendon

Maybe James should stand aside until at least the internal investigation is handed down and any findings/recommendations dealt with. Ultimately, to stand aside until the ASADA investigation is completed.

I only say this as it would be the ‘honourable’ act to do in the current situation, this is by no means admitting to any allegations but giving the club, players, and supporters some ‘clear air’.

Hird should not stand down at Essendon

Yeah, not a bad ‘fit’ – Mark Williams.

Whenever, if/when/where, should the axe fall for Mark Neeld I subscribe to the disciplinarian coaching format. This in essence is the context of the OP, well that’s they way I read the tea leaves. For a club to build, and lets face it, Melbourne Football Club has to lay the foundation stone/s (again?). That requires the coach to take a hard line approach, this in turn will develop the ethos/culture of the playing group. Although, this could be seen as the cart before the horse.

The administration must be the driving force and set the standard that is ‘the club’ and what it stands for, whereupon, this will engender the playing group, led/developed by the coach to execute their brand of footy on the field.

The Demons need to find their Ron Barassi

Great to see Richmond have a win over Carlton (I tipped Carlton – damn!). Was a game that ebbed and flowed, although only round 1 and you can’t really project (yet) how each team is going to travel for the remaining season. Might take a bit more of an interest in Richmond.

Malthouse, who probably pencilled in a win wouldn’t be too discouraged with what he saw with his charges.

Tigers pip Blues in thriller

Doesn’t Demetriou think he’s God? With the Knights Templar as his army holding back the hordes.

Well, I reckon as soon as Gill puts Demetriou to the sword we’ll have Good Friday night footy and all will be right with the world. So endeth the lesson.

How can it be "Good" Friday without football?

I am not a fan of Carlton, but, I do recognise a champion. Understandably Chris Judd is at the back-end of his career. He knows this, and more importantly Mick knows this. Both aren’t fools. I see it as he will still be playing a ‘percentages’ game, adding his influence to the more junior players, whilst mentoring Marc Murphy. A good succession plan.

Is Chris Judd ageing beyond stardom?

I was impressed with the game I went to (NAB Cup) – Bris V Coll. It wasn’t so much as Collingwood played bad, it was Brisbane (I reckon) played good. And I liked what I saw.

However, one swallow does not a summer make.

Could the Lions be roaring more than expected in 2013?

You are right in what you say Chris, in that the human emotion to revert back to a more golden age. I read that as the secure confines of when ‘we’ played sport at the local level. Yes, that is a time I do look back at and try not to compare to today’s environment, as to compare is simply folly.

‘We’ve’ moved on, so has sport, at all levels (for better or worse?). Sportsmanship, if not a dying art is on the wane. Therefore, if our sports heroes can’t be civil to the opposition, why should we as supporters? I am not for once suggesting I agree with the OP, but, as I stated I’m in two minds, as yet to make it up as to where ‘we’ are as a sports loving nation and the culture that was before, and now, and towards the future.

Vale Sportsmanship?

Australia is a nation of the worst possible losers

Sorta in two minds with the article.

Is the author making reference to the insecurities of modern society and ‘Prizes for All’? Or, in a more realistic world, the world of modern sports. With all its pressures for players, administrators, coaches & staff, and especially the supporters to accept nothing more than holding the silverware high. It looks good in boardrooms, on CV’s and supporters bragging rights.

Yes, in a distant past, sport was played at a more sedate pace, where you shook the hands of your competitor, had drinks with him/her after the match – win, lose, or draw. Hell, even swapped jumpers at the end of the Grand Final. No more, why? Professionalism, yes that filthy word that creeps into modern speak, filters down to the local level, so that even the Auskick coach is demanding more form his charges. Why? The parents demand it so.

Who’s at fault for breeding this culture?

Australia is a nation of the worst possible losers

Yeah, do like the term Footscray, rather than the contrived modern make-over. Slight thread drift, I would also like to see North Melbourne as that – North Melbourne. Not with the add on.

Yep, guilty as charged, stuck in a time warp of a more ‘innocent’ time.

Previewing the 2013 AFL season

If I may stray into the world of the NRL and comment on your piece. I see you have made reference to the AFL, and that there have been numerous articles written, on this site and other media formats, regarding this particular sporting phenomenon. Lets call it the ‘Davo’ phenomenon.

I don’t see it peculiar just to the elite sporting codes, just look at the mining industry. There you have just completed apprentices – now tradesmen on $180-200K a year. Pretty heady coin for a 22 year old, who without the ‘mature’ guidance of say a parent/guardian may, and do, perform in the same manner as ‘Davo’. A sense of entitlement that they are the Masters of the Universe.

Is what we are seeing really a snapshot of this generation? Just look at the ‘thumbing’ of their noses to any authority, either government/community/corporate/family etc. What the CEO’s of sporting codes will have to now manage is the ‘child minding centre’ that is their respective clubs. Stay tuned for more of this.

Should we marginalise NRL's d--kheads?

Previewing the 2013 AFL season

Our game is bigger than the personalities in it, be it player, administrator, and/or media. The home & away season cannot come quick enough, although in fairness, the NAB Cup has been an excellent intermission. Maybe, it’s just frustration of all the ‘circus’ events that have taken place since the 2012 Grand Final that has brought it to this.

AFL should be about the game, not media

I would like to turn your attentions to John Kennedy – “Don’t Think” speech 1975 VFL Grand Final. Considered by some to be up there as one of the all time great coaches. I’ll let others decide.

If so, I’ll give some anecdotal stories of his style:

Treated his players rigorously as a collective, hardly ever speaking to them individually, insisting on radical selflessness. He didn’t tell players to enjoy the game, nor was he concerned whether his players liked each other. The game was about winning respect as footballers.

After a team loss and getting a ‘spray’ a player chimed in with “They were doing their best.” Kennedy replied “my job is to make them better.”

Just thoughts on a coaching style, whether it’s suitable for this day and age I dunno, for me it works.

Time for 'Tubs' to take over Australian Cricket

Aaaah……I just had a 70’s moment where you referenced the ‘tache. Yep, totally concur, although, my addendum to the ‘tache is that it must be the compulsory ‘Porn Moe’. Now that would be a cricket team to be proud of.

Who should replace Howard, Inverarity, and Arthur?

Are some of us remembering those halcyon days of Australian cricket – ala 60’s/70’s/purple patch 80’s (brutalised by the WI)/90’s? I replied in another piece that I reckon what we’re seeing is Gen Y in all it’s glory, and that the universe does centre around ‘me’.

Drawing a longbow, but, maybe the Baggy Green doesn’t hold it’s prestige in a modern world where money abounds for those who seek fame & fortune.

The darker side of Michael Clarke

Ummm…….not too sure on the quote “More importantly, everyone likes him” Unquote.

Is that to be the criteria for all coaching, and lets cast the net further, and Captain appointments – to be liked by all? Not itching for an argument, but, for appointments in those key roles I think I’d like it filled with persons of a ‘winning’ mindset with the obvious for getting the best out of their playing group. That may require being the ‘hardman’ and making unpalatable decisions, that’s why you’ve been selected.

Being all things to all men will only end in being nothing to no one.

Time for 'Tubs' to take over Australian Cricket

Is it possible that we are seeing a microcosm of modern society through the exploits of our sporting elite? Disregard for authority, entitlements, lacking self discipline, the list goes on.

Things going from bad to worse for Australian sport

Out of all of this ‘he said – she said’ stuff, and the homeworkgate I’m looking at how Shane Watson as in his capacity as Vice-Captain acted in a most un Vice-Captain like fashion. He, like it or not is part of the leadership group, therefore, should be acting as such. No such qualities did I see in his recalcitrant attitude.

Howard and Watson in a battle for their cricket futures

And, to throw this into ‘their’ concerns – Buddy is holding off contract negotiations till the end of season. A whiff of Cloke surrounds this, and no matter what spin you put on it, that damaged Collingwood.

JOHNNO: Is Hawthorn’s season already on the line?
