yes didnt mean FNQ. Pretty much from Borroloola west, thru the Top end, the Kimberley, etc. Dominant Aussie Rules in indigenous areas.

Have the Socceroos missed out on talent over the years because of other football codes?

Would think AFL midfielders most suited as body types. Some of the great indigenous AFL players with their brilliant foot-eye co-ordination and balance would be pretty good. Culturally, this would be difficult for soccer to attract them though, in the far North & West they love their footy and idols who play Aust Football. Not impossible over time.

I like to play golf too, but rarely find myself watching it. Back in the 1990s though I did follow Greg Norman around Huntingdale like a puppy. 😂

Code wars are silly. Let's embrace all sports

chip meet shoulder 😂

Code wars are silly. Let's embrace all sports

My favourites to watch in order:
1. AFL (EFC & big games in Top 4)
2. NFL (any team)
3. Rugby Union (National team & Aust sides in Super comp)
4. Soccer (National team only)
5. Rugby league (Tigers & Sharks)

Good article Chris.

Sheek,

More importantly, how do we get the love back for the Wallabies. I miss the golden 90s. Where is the next Campese?

'Embarrassingly petty': AFL roasted for dropping R1 2023 fixture to clash with Socceroos kick-off

Ag074, i read it’s always released first week in Dec. To be honest, wouldn’t know.

There is one twitter comment in particular re Vic and the W word lol. They allowed it on the Roar. Hmmm.

Uncle ‘Tom’ below should perhaps get a gig on Russian TV, you know how they despise everything Ukrainian and think they shouldn’t exist. haters gunna hate.

No-one likes the AFL governing body, but they’re hardly made up of dimwits either.

'Embarrassingly petty': AFL roasted for dropping R1 2023 fixture to clash with Socceroos kick-off

To get that close to a powerhouse country is a real achievement. Was thinking it would be 3 -0, not 2-1.

The Socceroos are out of the World Cup, but they've restored our faith in football

A few observations:
Didn’t make the connection until I saw this. No-one thinks too much about footy at this time of year, except perhaps diehards. It’s cricket, horse racing, one -offs like the WC, etc
Plenty of victims/haters commenting. it wouldn’t matter when the AFL dropped the fixture TBH.
The Roar editors showing some bias, allowing certain twitter comments….hmmm.
Interrupting the news cycle of your competitor is not new. Was it necessary?, in my opinion, no. But it doesnt change people’s preferences, come March 23 the focus will be back on footy and no-one will care.

The Socceroos have proved yet again that only one sport can truly unite Australia

Not suggesting it’s bigger globally, I was talking from an Aust perspective. These days the Ashes have faded somewhat even in OZ.

Why choose though. Enjoy both.

The Socceroos have proved yet again that only one sport can truly unite Australia

That all depends on your perspective and what is important to each of us doesn’t it.

For example: You are wanting my AFL club Essendon who I have followed since I was a kid, who my whole family also follows to whither and die. Err nup. Why would I want that?

Your proposal is a sporting version of a mono-culture. No thanks.

Ask an American would they give up College football & NFL. why would they? It’s part of the culture. Same as AFL in the southern States.

The Socceroos have proved yet again that only one sport can truly unite Australia

No thinking AFL fan would defend the treatment of Adam Goodes. There are plenty of small minded yobs in an AFL crowd, who’ll find any reason to hate an opposition player.
I bet there are few Swans AFL fans who dislike Adam Goodes though.

The Socceroos have proved yet again that only one sport can truly unite Australia

That was an incredible moment in Australian sports history. Relived it recently on Netflix, “Untold – the race of the century” . The underdog story always gets traction for Aussie sports fans. Certainly united the nation.

The Socceroos have proved yet again that only one sport can truly unite Australia

I wouldn’t generalise on the demographics of an AFL game based on the Swans crowds. AFL crowds in Melb are typically 50/50 men/women and all age groups from 5 to 75, MCC members to the outer.

The Socceroos have proved yet again that only one sport can truly unite Australia

It’s comparing apples and oranges to compare AFL/NRL with the passion for the Socceroos. The latter is a National team that of course ignites a patriotic fervour. Club fans will always stay loyal to their club. It’s completely different. Not sure why the issues that these codes have prevents the fans from still loving their clubs and following the sport. Seems a bit high and mighty to me.

Cricket & Soccer is a better comparison. Though you can’t compare the current test series against the Windies with the World Cup. of course the WC is much bigger and has massive gravitas for the sports fan. A truer comparison would be the Ashes for the Aust sports fan and even then Australia would need to be the underdog. This is part of why its such a huge event for Australia, we are not dominant in the global game. The challenge is immense and any goals or wins are of huge significance. it’s relative.

I realise this is a bit old. But how pathetic was the due diligence here from EFC. Any recruitment, especially at ‘C’ level should evaluate experience, skills & cultural fit. Particularly the latter.

The arguments about religious views and whether they should matter to a club are moot. The bloke has strong views which do not align with a tolerant club. Sort that out before you employ them.

When sacking the coach is the easy option, but history shows fortune often favours the brave

Hi Geoff,

Putting aside the religious or woke arguments at play here. This is a disastrous example of poor due diligence on behalf of the Essendon Board & Management. If the ‘values’ were so conflicted this should have been flushed out during due diligence.

The Wrap: Essendon and Manly debacles an opportune reminder for rugby to focus on its core values

Yikes, this ol chestnut.

The only way it would work is if the players want to play and the clubs allow it. It’s not the pinnacle of the game. Maybe big dollars for the players would win them over?. Don’t think we need it.

It's time to bring back State of Origin footy. Here's how the pre-finals bye could help make it happen

This is the same argument rolled out by NRL fans for many years, even with spreadsheets lol Show us the link.
However, it doesn’t matter if technically if you add 6, multiple by 12 and subtract 9 to calculate the NRL out rates AFL. Each time, for each TV rights deal the AFL beats the NRL. Despite all the bleatings beforehand, followed by conspiracy theories afterward. The AFL is trumping NRL each time…
Why? TV execs clearly know why. Not rusted on couch potatoes.
I would proffer:
Longer game with more add breaks.
Big stadiums with big crowds would appeal to advertisers to be associated with. Not the mostly suburban stadiums the NRL plays in. It looks like a suburban game. (Broncos excepted). AFL has 7-8 clubs with fan bases that would match the Broncos.
