Creative Destruction doesn’t have to be ‘industry driven’. That’s an unnecessary and arbitrary fence around the definition of innovation. The term certainly applies to new players coming into an industry from the outside – which is exactly what foreign owners are.

“The Fair Play Rules are an attempt to allow innovation and change to be driven internally”
A very wrong-headed attempt. There is already a huge incentive for developing your own players – it’s called getting awesome players for free. FFP makes no meaningful contribution to this and at the same time introduces the myriad negative impacts of tying expenditure to revenue.

That’s a good point. The innovation in this context is the sourcing, application and exploitation of new and different funding sources to football. Perhaps not as glamorous as the types of innovation you cite, but innovation nonetheless.

Smaller clubs have been plundered for decades under a variety of systems.

You are correct Nordster! We do the odd sport thing from time to time. I’m not sure if you saw my previous Roar piece on safe standing: http://www.theroar.com.au/2015/06/11/time-to-take-a-stand-at-aami-park/#comments.

Hi guys – thanks to everyone for reading my piece and especially those who took the time to comment.

Some people have rightly raised the difficultly that might exist in making safe standing become a reality. I am actually quite positive about the possibility of this occurring in Australia one day. Basically, if this becomes commonplace in the Premier League, it won’t be long before it becomes commonplace in the A-League. Atmospheres in the Premier League are absolutely dire at the moment and I think lots of clubs are willing to give safe standing a try. A club as big as Celtic getting on board is a significant development.

In addition, a lot of UK MPs have made safe standing part of their manifestos in the recent UK elections.
