Any other accountant-looking Melbourne hookers wanna come up for a premiership cameo?

The forgotten players: Brisbane Broncos

Your contribution to the topic certainly highlights your superior intellect. 👍

And that’s the crux of the issue. It’s not what he was able to achieve, which benefitted all sports nationally, it’s V’landys personality and jibes at the other codes along the way. TBF Gill was throwing a few stones himself, Fitzsimmons and the RU bofins had their shots, all amplified by the press.

It’s a credit to the systems they’ve set up that they have the luxury of choice. Too bad Suli is gone but there are some decent names to choose from but the halves still seem to be an issue. Looking forward to them running around in a FT basis in the Ron Massey cup this season.

You’ve lost your mind buddy.

The NRL season started and finished exactly how they proposed it would. That is my evidence. Every precedent the NRL set to get the game up the AFL followed. You cannot even provide one example to the AFL’s contribution.

HNY BB.

You got me with Harvey Howard. I do like your research into some of these guys. I had a bit to do with a few of these gjuys through various ways. Bampton’s career could have been anything, he was as skillful a young fella as I’ve seen. I think the Broncos missed a trick by letting Parcell go. While he didn’t go onto great heights he would have been a perfect utility. One notable inclusion for the Mackay crowd is Butch Fatnowna. I think he only got the one game but it’s a highlight for a big family up there.

By chance I came across a highlight reel of his just recently.

Only in every single way. The AFL never released a plan until the NRL had all the approvals and games scheduled and AFL just copied it. Name one original idea the AFL implemented?

Mate, Dan Andrews looked over worked, Gill just grew his hair out. Is it so hard to acknowledge that V’landys set the template to get all contact sport up? I appreciate that Gill had his hurdles between club and state requirements but V’landys is the guy who turned the Poli’s from hard borders to (essentailly) bidding to get hubs in their states. From that point, all are details are how not if in getting the codes up. Don’t get me wrong, the NRL fell A-backwards into the one guy who has the experience and high level contacts to achieve what he did – long before they knew they needed it. We should all be appreciative he came to the NRL when he did.

Yep, Gill certainly had his work cut out for him by doing nothing and watching to see if the NRL went ahead and then copied their approach. He is an ideas man that Gill.

Not really. He played a utility role as well as a Ponga, Morgan or DCE as they came through. The game plan was always to swap and change around with Friend at hooker but his job was to play around the middle as a utility does.

So Freddy has just absolved himself from any blame there, he played his role perfectly, it’s all about the injured players. He even goes on to say “Given our fullback went down injured in the last game, if I’d known that, I might have changed the team” That’s brilliant Freddy, or you may have noticed that every team has carried a utility on the bench in the last 10yrs (inc last 2 origin games). Freddy had every advantage leading into the series and fluffed it.

Even though this article is more an advertisement than thoughtful insight, I don’t think Freddie has given a very good account of himself here

Very thoughtful of you mate. 😂

Merry Xmas mate. Enjoy.

The Broncos have one hand on the 2021 wooden spoon

I’ll be sure to pin this one up there with your “NSW 3-0, 40-0 every game”.

A gentleman’s bet that the Broncos finish higher than the Saints in 2021?

Nice one LM, it was worth the wait. I purposely used Hunt just for that extra element of doubt. He either redeems himself from 2015 or gets a parody song “can’t catch, can’t kick” ala Joe the cameraman. 😁

As a Bronco, Hunt’s 2015 effort is hard to swallow but Ainscough would be worse. I feel for him though. That was his best season ever and didn’t deserve to finish it like that.

Does the NRL have any idea how to manage change?

Yep, I’m one of the mug punters who ripped out the card to see Gal get bombed and he did just that. How he stayed on his feet I’ll never know but it’s a testament to his strength to do so. As for his gloves, I hear the Qld Govt is looking at bidding. There’s a new attraction for locals where they attach those gloves to one of those rebounding punch manikins, with Gal’s face, and a prize to those who can knock it down.

Paul Gallen was just made to be punched

As a Qlder there’s a few very well known names in this one. I’m glad you gave Leis his true respect for his contribution to Redcliffe. One bloke I’d like to give a shout out to is Travis Norton. Quite a distinguished career yet largely forgotten. 200+ games, 2 GF appearances, one for the Dogs and Captained NQ in 05. Plus a handful of Origin games.

The forgotten players: North Queensland Cowboys

Tinkler ws a much better option…

The forgotten players: Hunter Mariners

That’s actually a half decent squad 1 – 13. I was a big fan of both Swain and Smith during their respective careers. Infact, I would argue Swain the best hooker in the game for a while there.

Nice one BB.

The forgotten players: Hunter Mariners

2021 Grand Final, Dragon v Melbourne. It’s 22-23 in the with 3 minutes to go – in Melbourne’s favour. JAC has just crossed to add another 4, possibly 6 points and the ref blows the try. Fortunately for the Dragons the try is reviewed before the shot at goal and found to have a double knock on in the lead up. No try but scrum to Melbourne. Hughes feeds the scrum, the ref calls “break” and K Brom takes a hit up. In his haste, he fumbles the play the ball – hand over.

The Saints take a few one-out runs but getting bashed by the Storm’s rushing defence. NAS, too keen and offside – 6 again. The Saints get on a roll and big Josh Kerr runs right over Smith wo stays down, forcing the trainer to stop the game and Smith to leave the field. 5th tackle from a set restart and 35m out. Ben Hunt positions himself for the shot 45m out for the 2pt FG.

Do we want the 2pt Field Goal?

Does the NRL have any idea how to manage change?

Good stuff Matth. Further reinforcing the legend of DK Lillee. If there was another column for swagger he would be leading that too. That ‘Best Winners’ team is phenominal. Imagine taking 5 wickets and still facing Maxwell and Gilly? It must be bittersweet for Hussey to be named in both.
I literally googled to see if there was another Clint McKay I had forgotten about. I guess you could drill down further into what wickets, where and when but it would be a good story to have your name in this company.

Analysing Australia’s most successful ODI bowlers

Nice article Peter and I largely agree. The bloke has swagger and one fo the very few who never took a backward step when the Aussies were carying on like D… IMO he’s responsible for bringing Indian cricket back to thr top. Of course there are fluctuations but when he’s on so is India.

An ode to Virat Kohli

I was enjoying the other bloke. He was pumping up the fighter intros like nothing else.
