United thrash A-League All-Stars
Do you support the A-League by any chance? Because when you call the A-League players a bunch of semi-professionals you sound like just as much of a Euro snob as the Man United supporters who booed the A-Leauge All Stars
Not all Manchester United fans are like that (I promise)
There were a lot more than 10 players missing. Hersi was meant to play but he was injured, the three marquees didn’t play and the 20 A-League players that were picked for the East Asian Cup, making this, theoretically, a third string team.
United thrash A-League All-Stars
Despite some hating, I actually enjoyed reading this article!
Melbourne's signing of Fabrizio Miccoli will get tongues wagging
I am loving the reports that Sydney FC are playing attractive football for once. It makes a change. I will definitely be attending as many home games as possible. Up the Sky Blues
A mouth-watering 18 months awaits Australian football
Who said McFlynn should play? It’s unlikely he’ll be captain this year as he will just be bench warming. Regardless I would prefer to not even see him on the bench. There are young exciting prospects who warrant a position on the bench far more
Sydney FC building a 4-3-3 base, with Carle the enabler
1. “You could nearly say that he’ll gain more in 12 months at Chelsea (despite being the number two) than he did in six years at Fulham as their first-choice goalkeeper.” – no, you could get any near as much benefit from playing as a number 2 goalie in a big club than playing SIX YEARS AS A NUMBER ONE in a slightly smaller but still successful club that, let’s not forget, played in the Europa League and made it to the final.
2.”Be it in the Carling Cup, League Cup, FA Cup, Premier League, Champions League or Super Cup, Cech will need to be rested and when that happens, expect the Australian international have his gloves ready.” – Yes he will be readying himself for a handful of matches against generally inferior teams in games where he will have little to do.
3.”He was the forgotten hero in the penalty victory over Uruguay. He was the fallen hero as Australia was saw their World Cup dream robbed from their eyes by Italy.” – wrong, Shwarzer’s heroics in the penalty shoot out will never be forgotten. Nor was he in any way the fallen hero against Italy.
But otherwise I actually don’t think there is a completely terrible move. There are certainly some positive. Will be interesting to see how he goes. He will no doubt be our starting goalie for all our games in the World Cup and so he should be. He’s a phenomenal goalkeeper and an inspiration.
Chelsea deal a win for both Schwarzer and Socceroos
Yes but I’m sure he could easily have found a decent club in Europe to get lots of game time. I would hardly call the UAE Pro League ‘decent’. It’s blatantly obvious that most players go there for there money. Look at the players who have gone to play in the Middle East, Brosque, Spiranovic, etc., and look how much they have fallen from grace. The only player to go to the Middle East and maintain their form has been Bresciano but he is excused for his actions because he is OLD. Holman is too young

Great article. How did South Melbourne get voted the greatest club in Oceania?? What was this for?
Let the shots at the Socceroos begin
I didn’t rate Oar’s performance against Japan, I thought he was poor then but his performance against Iraq – definitely should have been man of the match. He was quick, showed the ability to beat his defender, put a delightful crossfield through ball to Cahill, etc. Not entirely sure why Cahill got man of the match but at the end of the day who cares we’re going to rio
Australia vs. Iraq: Socceroo player ratings
agree with all this except for Wilkshire…..he’s only 31! Hardly that old. In addition, he plays in Russia where the teams are renowned for their gruelling pre-season fitness regimes. If he can start compete with those boys, he’ll have no problem in the world cup. He had a decent game against Japan and looked VERY GOOD in my opinion against Jordan. I think Archie deserves a shot. Even if he has lost some pace, he’s still faster than most players in the current roos squad. He’s make up for that with his enthusiasm anyway. He gave the team a lift when he came on against Jordan. It was his run, using his pace to cut inside and draw the defenders away from Cahill, that left Cahill wide open at the back post.
Which of the ageing Socceroos would you take to Brazil?
Having seen little of Rogic so far, my breathe was taken away by the technique and skill he displayed in his small cameo. I would love to see him come in a bit earlier in the game.
Not quite Kruse-ing, but Robbie gives Roos rhythm
A misunderstanding no doubt exacerbated by the language barrier. No reason to crucify him, he has apologised for his actions. Osieck always likes to keep the mood light-hearted but its hard when the media don’t like to feel the same way
Osieck 'women should shut up' gaffe [VIDEO]
It’s funny that only people who know absolutely nothing about football (primarily, AFL and rugby fans) insist on calling the sport “soccer”. Get with the times you old codger. There’s a reason it’s called the FFA (FOOTBALL federation of Australia). Do you really think football supporters want to be associated with the old days of “soccer”!??
Are we supporting the Soccerwhos?
I struggle to see why Australian football cannot match the drama of English football. Your only evidence for this is the fact is the promotion/relegation that goes on between league in England. This is why we have the A-League finals series…….. Does England have that? No. Can the finals series match the promotion/relegation battles from drama? Yes. I think so. Just look at the Brisbane Roar vs Central Coast final a few years back.
English football has drama Aussie sport can’t replicate
This article made for a interesting read. Thank you.
I can’t see a second Brisbane team or a team from Tasmania happening. I think a third club from Sydney and/or Melbourne is a fantastic idea but we will have to wait a long time for that to be a legitimate option. I think a team in Geelong would be overshadowed by the AFL club from the same town. The Goldfield idea is an interesting one which I haven’t heard much about – I see a lot of potential there, persoanlly.
The next expansion team has to be Canberra though!
A-League expansion possibilities
A very interesting insight into an area of world football I, for one, know little about. Thank you.
Some A-League 'active fan' perspective from the stands in Casablanca
Its very interesting you bring that up. I guess it says a lot about the loyalty of Mariners fans. There’s no hiding the fact that Sydney is a pressure pot. If Sydney FC dioesn’t play well, no one turns up. If they’re winning, they’ll rake in the crowds. This season was an exception only because of Del Piero.
The end of a journey, the beginning of an era for Mariners
If there’s one team that one can that can build on a championship title it’s the Wanderers. With the bulk of the squad signed on for next season and Tony Popovic at the helm, a team that is based on discipline, humility and structure is bound to do well in the future. It pains me to this but this is coming from a Sydney FC supporter.
Why a title could hurt the Wanderers
He certainly should have been called up against Oman. He is by far the best Australian at the moment without a Socceroos cap
Shane Lowry longing for Socceroos shot
the assessment of the various are spot on in my opinion. exactly what i think. being a sydney fc supporter, I really hope Farina is not just a short-term problem to our problems. While fitness levels have certainly improved, evident in our stronger finishes to games, which earlier in the season we let slip away (the sydney victory game at sfs for example), the team has lacked structure at times. I hope Farina brings a clear-cut mentality to the boardroom and to the players next season
Who’d be an A-League coach?
Yes, I agree with you. The Roar actually changed the name of the article from “Stop Blaming the Youth”, my original title (in reference to Osieck blaming the young players), to “Football fans must stop blaming the youth”.
Football fans must stop blaming youth
the great thing about this finals series is that some of lower teams, Brisbane and Perth, have found late form while Adelaide, for example, have taken their foot off the gas somewhat in the second half of the season. It will be interesting to see how the finals series unfolds
Can Perth reach the grand final again?
