the bon jovi analogy is poor.

the medium of the game of state of origin makes the money not the indiviidual player. e.g. if greg inglis does not play the gate / attendance does not drop significantly. brad pitt / tom cruise can argue greater pay / share of the takings as their starring absence / presence in a film can drop / increase the money made.

$20000 is excellent money and they have the possibility of 60000. this is on top of their club salary, sponsorships etc. i wish they would stop thinking they should make the ridiculous money of the english premier league / nfl etc. australian rugby league players are well paid. how much does a typical supporter make? a hell of lot less i think.

if substantial extra money is generated then it should be fed into promoting/ developing/expanding the game at all levels (grassroots/club/internationally).

state of origin is not about making megabucks for a player. it is an honour. one could also argue they are financially rewarded in other ways as their value on the club market goes up with SOO on their CV.

just a greedy mentality.

NSW great Elias says players deserve more

very biased article in parts. ” they went about as close to an undeserved Origin win as a team can get”.

i saw farah kick the ball out and its then play on. phil gould does not always have the right answers, at least sterlo is a bit more objective. in the end this decision did not effect the result. it will be interesting with the passage of time what people will say. the welsh dude in the rugby world cup semifinal now acknowledges the referee was correct to send him off.

NSW overreacted in the fight namely jennings, pearce and lewis. all hotheads. i saw a lot of queenlanders trying to stop things happening rather than escalating. lot of NSW players swinging like madmen.

hayne smacked thurston in the face with a punch. no penalty given.

i also thought there was a stealing of the ball prior to one of the NSW tries. haven’t got access to a replay to look at it again to double check. channel 9 did not replay it in depth at the time.

all of NSW tries were ordinary. QLD errors rather than good play on NSW part. NSW tries were “lucky”.

i understand its disappointing to lose but try not to look through at the world COMPLETELY through blue coloured glasses.

Five hit ups: the talking points from State of Origin one

im waiting for him to blame rugby league/nrl again for the “ills” of modern rugby union……..

CAMPO: Few modern Aussie players would've made it in my era

as i am one of the few people who likes league and union equally i find these kinds of articles bizarre and lacking objectivity. to say that “league has a lot to answer for” for some problems in union is ridiculous and to say both games are “totally different” is also questionable.

these kinds of comments are still tied up in some class war from years ago and the split in rugby. get over it.
the word pretentious comes to mind.

both games exist, have a long history and both are enjoyable and can learn from each other.

CAMPO: Time to get the league influence out of union

the world is becoming smaller and smaller. to have a “nationality” encompassing more than one country is not unusual (due to residency, your birthplace, a parent’s birthplace and/or your grandparents birthplace). people will obviously use this to their advantage/opportunity and none of this is a new phenomena and occurs in different sports.

e.g. craig gower played for italy in the six nations
dan parks played for scotland
Lesley Vainikolo played for england
henry paul played for england
brent cockbain played for wales whilst his brother played for the wallabies
rangi chase played for england
brian smith (wallaby/balmain played for ireland)
ryan mcgoldrick played for the USA
Chris Heighington plays for england
and the list goes on and on …………….

what do nicole kidman, guy pearce, naomi watts and mel gibson have in common?

nothing to do with hollywood or acting. none were born in australia.

this is about fitting a person into a single box and many people cant be, no matter the rules. they encompass several boxes.

one solution might be to expand the SOO to a round robin tournament involving QLD, NSW, Auckland, NZ Counties, Pacific Islands. But the QLD and NSW people i doubt would ever go for this as its tampering with SOO. perhaps keeping the existing qld/Nsw matches and introducing a separate Auckland/NZcounties/pacific islands SOO (with mainly Nrl players) would help.

the solution is not clear or easy.

Funny how eligibility is only questioned by losing teams

lot of the comments here supporting the tackle appear to caught up in some kind of male macho stuff and some misguided notion that head injuries arent too serious. there is some research coming out now about the negative short and long term effects of brain injury in rugby players and other contact sports such as NFL. Concussion is a brain injury.

i dont necessarily want shoulder charges banned but i dont think they are particularly skillful. usually its just some big lug running at someone and then bodies flying. if you perform a shoulder charge and it goes wrong and hits the head you should be held accountable.

id rather see a great ball and all tackle or a great tackle around the legs. i recall trevor gillmeister literally cutting someone’s legs out from them in a state of origin match. it was so effective the person had no chance of getting the ball away.

NRL coaches' attitude to foul play must change

too much 20/20 hindsight in this article. “Logic would tell you to work to the posts and set for a field goal.”

with 10 minutes to go and up by 12 points and attacking, one would be more likely to attempt to score a try, NOT try to kick a field goal.

Marshall's misfiring magic pulls the Rabbitohs out of the hat

i am one of the few people (in my experience) who like rugby league and union equally.

“Granted that next to rugby league polar bear hunting could be considered a global sport”. i have always found this kind of comment ignorant and pretentious.

RU is more of a global game than RL but it is hardly football(soccer). i dont know how many times that i have heard a diehard rahrah say that RU is a world game and RL played only in 3 countries. RL is played in numerous countries beyond AUST, NZ and England. it is played in countries such as ireland, scotland, france, PNG and other countries like USA, russia, czech republic, south africa etc etc http://www.rugbyleagueplanet.com/
in terms of high standard teams from other countries – yes RU has more more than RL but the standard drops away rapidly past the trinations, six nations and argentina. i have heard diehards criticize the RL world cup and the scorelines but then i need to remind people of some RU scorelines e.g. Nz v japan 145-17 and aust v namibia 142-0.
anyway my point is (as i like both games equally), please dont show your ignorance with reference to polar bear hunting. rugby union is closer to polar bear hunting than you think when you consider games such as foootball/soccer. to be honest i have never heard a RL player say they are “attracted to the idea of playing rugby union because it’s a “global game””. that is usually RU propaganda. where would a player play in this RU global game? as i understand it they are limited pretty much professionally to NZ, SA, AUST, UK, IRELAND, FRANCE…..hardly the world!
