Jeznez – Yes, Catch the Ball is a fairly useless phrase like Use Your Top 2 Inches – people need to be shown how.

How far can self-belief take you in rugby? The top two inches - Part 1

OK, lets try a clumsy work around.
Daffyd – Language, body language, having empathy etc is all noted by players. It is all taken in and then they decide if you are the kind of person they want to win for…or not.
Dont do this, dont do that. Nobody particularly likes being ordered around and told what to do. That why nobody likes Nanny States, I guess.

Hopefully its working now.

Hi BF, yes you are right, this is only the introduction and some tools for the tool boxes are coming in parts 2 and 3. And its never too early to jump right in. As I mention above, if the captain and coach do not resonate with the team, that is, they would follow them to hell and back, then all is lost. They will sabotage you with passive resistance to your strategies and tactics. Its human nature. I believe its called ¨Losing the change room¨. When Ewen mcKenzie started having half time breaks on the sidelines, someone on the Roar wittily said ¨He´s lost the change room¨.

I loved the Bannister/Landy story. I had dreams of being a middle distance runner. My plan was to run 50 metres at top pace. Then the next day run 75m at top pace…and so on, until I had trained myself to run flat out for a whole mile. Guess what? My top pace was no where near enough to do a 4 minute mile! But what do you think of my strategy? I would like to know your thoughts!

Interesting concept! I never thought of it like that. Knock the oppositions best players down by 20%. And you could also focus on lifting your 80% players to 100!
We used to focus on the opposition flyhalf as he was usually in the top 2 or 3 players and had the most influence on the game. If you could nullify their flyhalf, well you were half way home.

Hi SMI, I guess I got lucky and just kept trying a few different things until something worked. Then I kept at it. I think that different things motivate different players and different teams. The challenge is to find what suits your players and your team best. I do not believe it is any different for Dave Rennie either. He seems a very empathetic person to me. And empathy is 80% of a great leaders job these days. I believe he would spend a lot of time thinking of strategies and tactics to get the most out of the Wallabies. And every single thing he does will have an impact. As Daffyd says above, language is very important. If the team does not respect the strategies and tactics of the coach, then the players will sabotage the coach (or captain) with passive resistance to their ideas. I guess this is most of the reason why Rennie gets the big bucks.

Exactly Bobby, couldnt have put it better. The will to win (¨Who wants it more¨) is probably the difference between otherwise evenly matched teams. How to integrate that into a coaching strategy…well that´s the challenge. That is, give the players the tools to make it happen. Fascinating topic.

Hi Colvin, everything you say is true. That is a great way to approach the strategy of coaching. And before that even happens, use some other tactics to instill self belief and confidence. More of that in the 2nd part of the article.

Hi Jeznez, ¨Catch the ball¨ is another one of those catch all phrases (like ¨Use your top 2 inches¨) that mean nothing unless you actually show people how best to do it.

Hi Daffyd,
Interesting psychology isnt it?. Even if you dont try to think of it, that will make it worse?
Some sort of reverse psychology happening there perhaps? Self fulfilling prophecy perhaps?
The type of language used, body language, attitude, empathy etc…are all at play on the brain at all the time…wether at work or play.
Apologies for the late reply, my internet is dodgy at the best of times.

I agree with the lets make rugby great in oz again team.

If Sanzar doesnt want Oz to have 5 teams, then fine, we go it alone and have our own domestic comp.

Could be the best thing that has happened to us since professionalism.

So lets get our house in order before we join Super Rugby again.

That means scrapping the current ARU board and their long term strategy.

The top down system hasn’t worked.

Lets try bottom up and invest in grass roots and get that going first, then work our way up from there.

The ARU board needs to be representative of everyone who plays rugby in Oz, not just a few select people from certain suburbs in Sydney and Brisbane.

This is a golden opportunity to get rugby sorted in Oz.
