Hey Topo,

You ever thought of offering your services to the ARU as scrum coach?

The Wallaby scrum is the source of our woes

“Forget whether the penalties were deserved or not. Forget refereeing errors. That is not the issue.”

Umm yes it is the issue. There was penalty awarded to England when Australia clearly had the dominant scrum. We wheeled them and pushed them back at least 5-10 mtrs. The English scrum was in ruins, yet we were penalised. How does this happen?

The refereeing this season at both S15 and test level has been woeful. Two critical mistakes made by the officials resulted in tries. To say that refereeing decisions aren’t the issue is laying blame where it’s not warranted.

The Wallaby scrum is the source of our woes

Yes, yes, yes everyone thinks Quade is the wrong person for the job. Well there was another young sports prodigy who was so up himself he cost his country a spot in a world cup final. He was given the captaincy of the national side and low and behold he was one of the best captains in modern times. Who is this? One David Beckham.

What about Ricky Ponting. A gambler involved in bar fights, who was handed the captaincy of the Australian cricket team and became one of the most successful in the modern era.

Time and again it is proven that handing the reigns (ok this time it’s the vice-captaincy) to someone brings out a level of maturity they never thought they had.

Instead of bemoaning Coopers elevation, we should be supporting him.

Horwill dumped, Quade vice-captain

Good article but is a flawed argument. The All Blacks and Springboks play the same number of tests as the Wallabies, yet these unions do not suffer the same “oh no not another darn rugby test match” syndrome. The problem with Australian rugby, and sport in general is that we are too distracted by all the other sports on offer.

We have AFL, Rugby League, Rugby Union, Soccer, Cricket, Netball etc that distract the Australian sporting public. In NZ rugby is the king of sports. Yes they have a league team (notice is said “a” league team, not 20), and a cricket team that no one really cares about. In SA they have a cricket team and that’s pretty much it. Even Argentina only have football to contend with. We are a nation of 20-odd million people dividing our time between at least 5 major sports.

There is also the territoriality of sports in Australia. Live in Victoria, South Australia or WA and AFL is king. Live in NSW or Queensland and league or union is your game. Rugby has tried to get into Victoria but hasn’t made the slightest dent to AFL viewer ship.

You don’t see this in NZ where the North Island loves rugby but Say Cricket is king in the South. It is a truly national sport, not big in a few major urban centres.

Yes winning will help, but it’s our love of all sport, that is the biggest problem.

Less is more the key to reviving interest in rugby

Should have happened before the 2011 World Cup.

Why was it done by mutual agreement? Surely the ARU should have put his contract through the shredder and shown him the door?

James O'Connor released by ARU

Again we see the Wallabies badly executing what should be the basics of rugby.

When on attack
1. Win the kick off
2. Retain possession or kick judiciously
3. Cross the advantage line on a regular basis
4. Pass to the belly/chest of a player in your team. Notice the use of the the word ‘to’. Not way out in-front, not around his boot-laces, not over his head, not behind him, not when the defence is milliseconds from cutting him in half.
5. Recycle the ball quickly. Don’t let the ball sit at the base of the ruck for what seems like minutes while the defence has more time than they need to set.
6. Run at the defence not along the defensive line (see point 3)
7. Protect the half-back

When on defence
1. Maintain the line
2. Trust the man outside you
3. Make the first up tackle
4. Let the sideline be your friend
5. Counter ruck like your life depended on it

These all seem like pretty basic things that players at test level should be able to do in their sleep. They shouldn’t have to learn.

The problem(s) with the Wallabies defence

While the return of Robinson rights a horrific wrong, it is silly to think he will single handedly be able fix our scrum.

Big Benn back to stabilise Wallabies

Oh god I forgot about that.

Winning Wallabies get my backhanded compliment

If we can’t beat the number 10 ranked team in the world by more than a point, at home, then we have a bigger problem than I thought.

Winning Wallabies get my backhanded compliment

Couldn’t agree with you more BBK. I’m surprised at the self flagellation the rugby public is going through. Yes we are playing bad rugby. No it’s not pretty to watch. Yes I am disappointed, but let’s give some time for the new structure to settle in.

Did we really expect to win two Bledisloe matches against the best team in the world? A team that is so full of confidence they could beat any team the rest of the world could put together. Playing those two matches probably wasn’t the best way to introduce a new coach.

A new coach needs time to instil a new playing culture. You can’t expect a team used to 6 years of playing one way, to suddenly change to a totally different style.

Give it time. Be patient.

Australian rugby: a neutral perspective

What about big Wil Skelton? You want size and power how does 203cm and 135kg and only 21 sound?

Yes he is a bit raw but with proper guidance and some gym time to bulk up he could be an answer to the big locks of the Boks and ABs.

Where can Wallabies find some mongrel?

True. It is slim pickings. Palu is out….again…with injury.

If Higgers was fit I’d put him there.

Wallabies team announced: Cooper at flyhalf, Folau to fullback

Finally!! The right players in the right positions. Cooper should always have been No10. genia might actually play well now that he has Cooper outside him. Folau always at 15. He can use his high ball skills and broken play running. Still not sold on O’brand at 11 though. And Mowen is a better No 6 than 8.

Still this is a team that can beat the Boks.

Wallabies team announced: Cooper at flyhalf, Folau to fullback

As a long time Tahs season member I have one word for you Michael:

“Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

Waratahs coach not ruling out Beale return

Could there be two stories with polar opposite subjects?

On the on-hand we have the story of Kurtley Beale, a hugely talented player who has achieved nothing and is now at risk of having his contract torn up by the ARU and sent packing tot he NRL.

On the other we have George Smith, a true champion and gentleman of rugby, who has had an illustrious career and is content to just get on with it.

Kurtley you could learn a thing or two from George.

George Smith a must for the Lions

The Waratahs do not represent Sydney. They represent NSW. They are simply based in Sydney.

Blues vs Waratahs a battle of big-city strugglers

Have you been watching the Six Nations? I’m sure the Wallabies aren’t quaking in their boots. It’s all been pretty pedestrian stuff.

Deans and Gatland in preparation for the big one

I agree Denby. Will be useful having two play-makers. Barnes should be jumping out of his skin to play.

Mitchell axed amid wide Waratahs changes

What about Betham on the wing? He was tearing it up in the ITM Cup.

Mitchell axed amid wide Waratahs changes

I was always confused by Folau at fullback. You need a rugby brain, and the ability to read the play. He should be on the wing (his position in league) or the centres where you give him the ball and say “Run that way hard.”

Mitchell axed amid wide Waratahs changes

The loss was down to 15 players (plus subs) not playing as a team. Hopefully the players who have been dropped have received their wake-up call.

Tell you what though. I would not like to have been on the receiving end of Chieka’s spray at half or full time.

Mitchell axed amid wide Waratahs changes

I’m glad to see Chieka is standing by his claim to pick on form and not reputation. Maybe now the players who have been dropped will realise they aren’t automatic picks because of their name. Should make for a competitive season.

Mitchell axed amid wide Waratahs changes

Why don’t we wait to see what happens instead of constantly putting them down.

Mitchell axed amid wide Waratahs changes

I think it’s a short-sigted policy by the ARU to restrict the choice of players to those base din Australia. We should be picking the best Australian players not the best Australian based players.

Wallabies stars should be able to play overseas

Well I’d say the crowd should be the 16th player but when the crowd consists of three men and his dog, it’s hard to get any sort of atmosphere going.

And the less said about Tah Man the better. He’s an embarrassment.

The Waratahs need rudders: who will step up?
