Brett, might be selling McMahon a bit short, he is only 21 despite the fact that his head looks like it’s spent every one of those years at the bottom of a ruck…
Big time prospect I think…the Rebels seem to have some good young talent coming along…

Australia's flanker depth in a state of sixes and no sevens

NZ, for sure…2 or so teams, but Canberra should have one first, as should FNQ. After NZ, HK, and Malaysia might be better than SA….same Timezone, expanding into new media/sponsorship markets, etc.

SA should focus on Africa expansion

Expand the BBL to South Africa and New Zealand

Pears too…just as he was getting over the bad run of injuries…

How Essendon should top up their roster

The forcast is for heavy rain tomorrow too Nudge, doesn’t look promising at all and it’s been very bloody wet here today

Australia closing in on No. 1 Test ranking

I would have thought that they both bowl a bit slower, certainly I think Herath does and he’s a bit shorter than SOK so it seems to loop more….maybe SOK will slow down in Asia?

Interested in your thoughts on Ahmed…he took a lot more wickets than SOK last year

O'Keefe is battling a perception problem

Looking at the 2 spinners yesterday, Lyon was far and away the more threatening and it made me wonder whether Ahmed would have been a better selection as a spinner. I suppose that it is only day 1 but O’keefe didn’t seem to pose much threat and whilst he has a strong record in the Shield, I do wonder how effective he will be in Sri Lanka where sideways movement becomes more important.

O'Keefe is battling a perception problem

Watching it yesterday, and not to devalue the batting, I’m not sure that they as good as the Windies. Surprising lack of depth over there.

O'Keefe is battling a perception problem

I said below o’Keefe in for Siddle, but Faulkner could go in equally…he’s quicker than Sidd’s these days who was struggling to get to 130 in the last test. Don’t think Marsh should be dropped as he’s been far from the worst bowler!

Stoinis the man to replace Mitch Marsh

Drop Siddle for O’Keefe, Marsh to 7, Neville to 6

Stoinis the man to replace Mitch Marsh

I would say apart from Sobers…

Jacques Kallis' career has been overrated

Geez Wasim Akram seemingly left out of the conversation a bit here…

Is Dale Steyn the greatest fast bowler post WWII?

I’ve often thought that because of the way that he gets his wickets, that the field set for him should be more defensive, or more akin to one day field placements. When he has a test field set for him, he seems to either bowl too wide of off, or spray down leg…is it the pressure to bowl in the corridor outside off in stead of bowling at the stumps as he does in the shorter forms?

This is looming as Mitchell Starc's summer

I have often thought that Starc should be set more defensive fields in test cricket.
His greatest strength is in bowling at the stumps and in test cricket he can get put away to leg. Clarke, in attempting to be aggressive, perhaps missed this and tried to apply a similar field as he di with Johnson.

Starc the pawn in a game not of his own making

Like who Rosco? Who was fit and could have got better than 18 at 27(Starc), or 16 at 26 (Hazlewood)?

Considering where they are in their careers and the fact that those 2 have led the attack and produced better than Johnson and Lyon…

It seems like Starc has been around a while but i think that Im right in saying that the Caribbean was the first time that he played 2 consequetive tests….

The Ashes: Has Siddle saved his Test career?

Fair point with regard to outswing….good to have in his armoury no doubt, but clearly had a few issues mastering it with the Duke. H did, none the less, bowl some absolute jaffa’s but lost control at times and with an aggressive field, sometimes slid onto the legs or pulled it down and bowled too short/wide. Striving for swing possibly impacted pace too if the coaches were pushing for more swing.

Irrespective, I’d argue that Johnson was the worst bowler on tour when he should have led the attack

The Ashes: Has Siddle saved his Test career?

The criticism of Hazlewood is misplaced and reactionary, he’s taken 16 wickets at 26, whilst, before this test Johnson had taken 11 at 39. The omission of Marsh in the fourth test meant that the bowlers spells were longer, and that thereby decreased the strike bowlers impact.

Then there is clarke’s captaincy. I would also say Lyon has been a bit under bowled and the fields set for the young pace bowlers have been overly aggressive, most especially for Hazlewood. How were the young bowlers expected to ‘dry it up’ without the field placement to allow them to do so?
I would also really caution against seeing this as Siddle’s resurgence. As far as I recall, a 130km seamer has never been very effective in Asia or Australia, the UK is a different story, with greener pitches and the Duke ball…

The Ashes: Has Siddle saved his Test career?

Actually $2.5b for the AFL…i suppose if you don’t live in Vic, Tas, SA, or WA, it probably is a surprise….but the game is bigger than religion in those states, and collectively, is by far the most supported code.

The gap(even adding tests, super rugby) is a sad indication of how far behind Rugby has slipped in this country since the 2003 World Cup and an indictment on Rugby management here. Lets not even mention game attendances…

What happened to the ARU TV deal?

And yet, they still have to score runs, not just look good.

If they only had to look good then Watson would be our best bat whilst Steve Smith would struggle to get a game.

I’ve watched them Don, and yes they look good. Doran is a star in the making and I expect home to do well this year. Harris, the only innings I’ve sen is the Shield final, and he looked alright, no doubt he has talent but 1 ton in a season and a FC average of 29 is not enough. Bancroft is the same age and has put more runs on the board, more consistently and has deserved his A team selection.

They have talent, but it still has to be realised and turned into runs consistently. If they can’t do that I don’t see how they can be selected until they learn how to consistently convert starts into scores. I feel that most of the bats in the list in the article don’t do this well enough, and the stats would support that they do no do this as well as their predecessors. They should be knocking on the door of test cricket through weight of runs in the Shield, I’ve not seen this.

Australia's glut of batsmen bodes well for the future

Bancroft is way ahead of Harris as an opener and they’re the same age. One regular season score above fifty and an excellent final performance is a long way short of making him a future test player…he would need to get his average well above 30 for starters.

Australia's glut of batsmen bodes well for the future

Don’t see any argument too support your naysaying Don? Who are the batsmen who have made the most of their talents over an extended period and are knocking the door down?

I’m just pointing out the relative paucity of players averaging above 40 today, let alone 50 in FC cricket, and for the most part it would their record over multiple seasons that got them a baggy green. Players like Martin Love, Michael Bevan, Jamie Siddons, Brad Hodge. Even Boof only got 26 tests because of those in front of him, can you imagine him being left out of the current side?

The averages I mentioned are not conjecture they are the facts, not mere speculation on their potential…

Australia's glut of batsmen bodes well for the future

A glut of batsmen?
Below is a list of those with a FC average above 40, only warner and Smith are above 50 with Lynn third at 46.
D Warner
S Smith
P Nevill
J Burns
C Lynn
M Wade

For me, there is no glut of batsmen knocking the door down, just too many who have not yet made the most of their talent or perhaps are still too young

Australia's glut of batsmen bodes well for the future

Here’s one to cause some excitement amongst Roarers….Maxwell, G’s FC record is 2140 runs from 34 matches at 40.4 per dig. It’s really only bettered by Lynn, and then his useful bowling is on top of this.

It kind of reinforces the point of this article, that, with the exception of Lynn, the group of batsmen mention above really haven’t performed adequately in the Shield

What has happened to Australia's batsmen?

Fair point, then he should definitely be going to Bangladesh, with the opening spot up for grabs

The Ashes: Rest Hazlewood, play Cummins

You might want to reread my comment …I did say that he’s the only one not injured, and that he’s not there yet….

The comment about not being able to decide between pace and spin is a ridiculous one. He’s bowled a few overs of spin in India and has got some handy wickets…

Who do you have in mind who’s not injured or on the tour already….McGoffin

The Ashes: Rest Hazlewood, play Cummins

It’s interesting to compare their first class records:
Joe Burns age 26 3807 runs at 40.9
Chris Lynn age 25 2340 at 45.8
Maxwell age 26 2140 at 40.3

Lynn is quite a way in front and I expected Burns to be ahead than Maxwell, the latter also has 49 wickets at 38 to his name.

Agree that Johnson looks ordinary has never noel did well there apart from the one innings this your we he got 6fer. Either Cummis or Ahmed to go in of the bowlers on tour.
