how is that feasible? you havent even explained how that would work.. every team in the world plays everyone? massive distances absolutely do still matter, it can affect players a lot.

and you were right, it would be a euro tournament with brazil and argentina, maybe one african team, an asian and a couple of american teams. rubbish.

Do we need a true ‘World’ Cup qualifying process?

obviously. did anyone ever doubt that it was for publicity?

Publicity the chief motivator for AFL's expansion signings

the revenue clubs get from shirt sponsors and other sponsors is so important considering many are in huge amounts of debt or just struggling financially in general.

before everyone goes around claiming shirt sponsors shouldnt exist, just think about what that might mean for your club is all im saying.

for example, id much rather see liverpool (my club) with carlsberg on their shirt than see them go into administration. however unlikely that is.

No shirt sponsors, for one night only

what a limited viewpoint. it’s arrogance to claim that because someone doesnt live in the area, they are not supporters. care to explain what ‘suppporter’ means to you? the worldwide support of teams like man u and real madrid has directly contributed to them being the richest clubs in the world. foreign support is incredibly important

football is a global game, and the premier league is becoming an increasingly global league.

We need to reward attacking football

well the preceding paragraph was about afl. so was the one after it.

West Sydney franchises need to find star power

“The one advantage that West Sydney most definately has is the love and passion for the game in the area. It can’t be too difficult for the new franchise to (or should I say they’d have to screw it up pretty big to not) bring these people in and make them fans, if they play their cards right they should get a sell-out every week.”

are you talking about AFL or football here? if AFL, you’re dead wrong. noone could give a toss about AFL ou this way. even rugby union isn’t popular-the two worst clubs throughout colts and grade are penrith and parra- by a long shot. rugby league is by far the biggest sport, and then football because of the huge ethnic culture in some parts. but as for AFL, no chance.

AFL is clearly trying to crack a big and potentially lucrative market by gicing west sydney a team, they are not giving a team to an AFL-loving area.

West Sydney franchises need to find star power

agree

Female commentators deserve more respect

she doesnt deserve any respect. she has no class, a total joke of a ‘journalist’. not surprising that she works for the telegraph, the biggest joke of a newspaper in the country.

Female commentators deserve more respect

i think you’re being a bit precious.
pretty sure some of those comments were jokes.

the ones that werent- who cares? i wouldnt say that women commentators have been treated with hostillity, rather a few computer nerds felt like being sexist, hardly newsworthy.

Female commentators deserve more respect

if the eels get momentum going, and their many, many offloads go to hand then space will open up for hayne and co. but if they start dropping passes, turning it over or if their forwards dont step up to melbourne’s pack they have no chance. parra will only win if everything goes their way, however melbourne will still win if its in their favour or a tight game.
also, that right side defence of the eels where grothe likes to come in is matched up with the best centre in the game in inglis. he could easily get a hat trick.

Why Melbourne will win the NRL grand final

well done sir. bravo.

Time for some A-League masala

i dont think that if, for example, tim cahill was nominated for fifa player of the year he would get mobbed.
first of all he rarely comes to australia and secondly not everyone would even care- football is far from the most followed sport.
yes the matildas are talented and deserve recognition i suppose, but the same could be said for any number of sportspeople in australia that dont get recognition.
lets not sugar coat this or try to be politically correct- women’s football is rubbish compared to men’s. its the way it is, so obviously they won’t get as much attention. the same reason the mls or a-league gets less attention worldwide as la liga or epl- its nowhere near as good.

Women's football is really taking off

“I come from a state where AFL is the main sport, a sport a lot closer to NFL and with a few success stories more than the NRL-NFL path.”- Freud.

care to elaborate on the similarities between AFL and NFL?

i would think that of the two codes, league players would be more suited to nfl than afl players. obviously punters and kickers aside, that’s a very specific skill and a very specialised position in nfl.

Hayne could make it in the NFL

is he tall enough to be a wide receiver?

Hayne could make it in the NFL

lachie’s a top player and a top bloke. still very young and raw but..

Deans names 10 new faces

“the print media is far too “one dimensional”, there is a focus on what players like for breakfast and not on the bigger issues of the game”

i totally disagree with this. i have no idea what the print media is like elsewhere, but im from sydney and the way it seems to be in the papers here is that there is so much focus on rugby league that only a small amount of space is allocated to football. that space tends to be filled with match previews, analysis and reports, not the ‘small issues’ as you put it. again, this could just be sydney papers.

as for bringing in foreigners, i think this could be a good idea but its just a means to an end. that is to have engaging and football-smart pundits instead of just journalists. for example, i’ve found that mark bosnich doesnt talk too much, but the things he has to say are relevant and interesting, providing a good insight into a footballer’s and in particular a goalkeeper’s perspective in a game. i think he might be the exception rather than the rule when it comes to Australian football commentators, so maybe bringing in europeans with good, analytical football brains can help.

maybe commentators dont comment on the tactics or technical side of the game to bring people who don’t know much about football to the game by ‘dumbing it down’ .

Football's barren media landscape

“They’re all short so its got little to do with him being unable to get it right, he just hasn’t got the players for it”

surely this is his fault? hes been in charge of this team for over a decade- theyre all players he’s chosen, whos fault is it theyre weak at set pieces if it isnt his?

also.. your comment about chelsea’s transfer embargo- do you really think it will make that much of a difference? they do have a small squad, but i think they have the experience and class to get through it fine.

Love him or hate him, Wenger brings results

totally agree with freud and skull. its a minimum 4 minutes. there was a goal celebration and a substitute coming on. this is where the extra time came from. i am not at all a united fan but city are being petulant idiots by complaining about this, its not even an issue. city had the same amount of time to score as united did. perhaps instead of adopting the ‘a draw is good at old trafford’ philosophy, they shouldve pushed for the winner. absurdity.
however, i have absolutely no doubt that ferguson would be complaining had the shoe been on the other foot.. you united fans know its true. all managers try to relieve the pressure on themselves and their players after a loss by diverting the media’s attention to something other than the performance. as for the ‘controversial’ added time- noone would be talking about it if hughes hadnt complained, so he achieved what he intended- we’re all talking about the added time, not the fact that united were better than city.

Manchester derby stoppage time unjust

how do you watch reserve matches?

Sacrificing the Manchester Derby for a game of cricket

i dont think it would ever happen. what about a country like south africa? or almost all rugby playing nations.. one of the biggest union nations in the world wouldnt play the hybrid game, in fact the only place it would benefit anyone is australia.
ive read a lot on this idea, wouldve been better if youd explained this more, like what parts of each code to keep and take away, how many players on the field etc.

It's time for league and union to merge

alrighty, my first XI:
Casillas
Dani Alves Vidic Ferdinand A Cole
Ronaldo Gerrard Xavi Iniesta
Messi
Drogba

Who are the top 15 players in the world?

also, yes- it was tough to leave van der sar out. but as i said in the article, the fact van der sar went so many minutes without conceding was as much due to the players in front of him as his own abillity. i think casillas is better.
john terry- no, not for me. has lost all pace and can get shown up, even though he’s still a good organiser. i think his best years are behind him.
pepe reina- class keeper, but if i cant include van der sar theres no way i can put reina in.

Who are the top 15 players in the world?

yes, both great players, and i’ve acknowledged their influence on their team, but i just cant agree that they have greater ability than a messi, ronaldo or xavi.
as a defender myself, im the first to acknowledge class defensive play, but i just think dribbling past three defenders and smashing it in the top corner (for example) is a rarer skill than heading the ball clear, tackling tough, kicking the ball away from attackers’ feet and tracking strikers around the pitch.
of course you can disagree, but thats just my opinion. you can train strength, tacklling, marking and defensive play, but what messi can do- you cannot teach that.

Who are the top 15 players in the world?

sorry guys i shouldve been more precise about the ‘achievements’ rating. i used the season just passed only as a reference. if i used your way freud then ronaldo would definitely be first, closely followed by kaka. in fact if i considered all achievements maldini probably would be in the list, and i cant agree that he is among the best 15 in the world. but as kaka did nothing last season (comparatively) and messi made himself the most important player (arguably) on the best team in the world and had an influence on the champions league final that ronaldo couldnt, i placed him higher. of course youre entitled to your opinion, but thats how i did it.

nice to see everyone’s arguing.

Who are the top 15 players in the world?

i agree with freud, how could you sacrifice a top player just so you can have a left winger? etherington and taylor are nowhere near as good or consistent as the current england players. even if capello were to do this, ashley young, walcott and even stewart downing(when he recovers from injury) are way better than the two you’ve chosen. they seem really odd choices. joe cole might grab a spot if he can ind some form too. there is no chance either of those players will be in the team.
a good manager works out a system to get the best out of his players, he doesnt pick lesser players to fit into a pre-definedd system. your logic is flawed.
