Racism rears its ugly head following penalty miss in Istanbul
Chelsea’s No.9 shirt has become something of a poisoned chalice in recent years, with holders of the shirt often struggling to fit in or make an impact at Stamford Bridge.

I’m a fourth year Media and Communications student at Sydney University. I am continuing to hone my skills in journalism, writing, radio production and presenting. Having originally lived in the UK before moving to Australia, I grew up surrounded by English football. My passion for the game is borderline mental and I love to share my views and have discussions with whoever is willing to listen and chat back! My other passions include acting for stage and screen and writing and performing music.

Having completed the first of their two-window transfer ban, Chelsea have begun their 2019-20 campaign under Frank Lampard with a 4-0 defeat at Old Trafford on their opening day in the Premier League.
Manchester City have been found guilty of breaching rules relating to signing international players under the age of 18 and have been handed a £315,000 fine as a result.

Hey Callum,
Thanks for commenting! I agree, its an absolute disgrace. Its such a shame that some media outlets use these instances to back their agenda in labelling Chelsea as a club with a racist fanbase. If a ‘fan’ has racist attitudes or racially abuses fans or players they are no fan of our club. Our diversity is part of what makes us so great. Lets remember the amount of foreign players who have come to Chelsea and been instrumental in our successes over the years. The way Tammy has handled the situation has demonstrated his mental strength and maturity. I also believe he will be an important part in our campaign this season, he has so much promise and Frank clearly rates him. Can’t wait to see him prove his doubters wrong.

Hey Buddy,
Thanks for commenting! I agree that there has definitely been a progression in the way the matter is dealt with and covered. My dad has told me stories of the things he saw and heard at the football when he used to go and its pretty horrific. Its good that nowadays people aren’t shy in speaking up, calling people out online and addressing the issue. Its a shame the issue is still so prevalent within the sport however, recently we’ve seen it with Moise Kean, Tammy and most recently Paul Pogba. Its such an ugly side of society and its a shame it carries through into football. I remember the first time my dad took me to Stamford Bridge for my seventh birthday, it was against Charlton in the Carling Cup. It was one of the best days of my life but it will always be tainted in my memory by the bloke behind us who was screaming racist abuse throughout the match, particularly at Drogba. My dad and his mate as well as others told him to pack it in but the problem is that back then the stewards weren’t too involved in terms of policing such behaviour.
I totally agree about the issue of sexuality in football. Did you see by any chance the issue of ‘The Gay Footballer’ on twitter a month or so ago? It really highlighted the issue you’ve brought up. Perhaps I’ll write about it for my next article! Thanks for bringing it up! 🙂

RLC, Hudson-Odoi, James, Abraham, Tomori, Mount and Christensen all academy players in the first team squad this season ???????? Loaning is part of Chelsea’s business model, it has been a big frustration for a lot of fans that a lot of the most talented youth often find themselves struggling to find a place amongst international superstars that are brought in, that is why some fans see the transfer ban as a blessing in disguise.
As for Lampard last season you are correct, he finished with Derby in 6th, the same as their previous season. I would absolutely call it a success though, he did this in his first season as a manager, a difficult feat in a league renowned for its competitiveness. He also changed their style completely, their attacking play was fast paced and very exciting, he got them to the play off final and he emphasised youth in his squad (notably through the loans of Mount and Tomori from Chelsea!
Hope this helps, thanks for commenting ????

Spot on mate, the midfield is going to be such an interesting area for Chelsea this season, Barkley and Mount both impressed in pre-season, Mount has impressed even more so in the first two games of the season, there is going to be a lot of competition for that attacking mid spot when RLC returns

Sorry about the question marks, I wrote the response on my phone and used two emojis, they have translated into question marks on my computer for some reason
