Sean loves to combine his love of sport and writing. He played country football for 20 years in Victoria and Western Australia, along the way breaking, straining or tearing every bone, muscle or tendon in his body. He recently won the Stringybark Australian Short Story History award for his depiction of the Aboriginal game of Marngrook and his work has appeared in various newspapers and anthologies. He has covered recent editions of the Jayco-Herald Sun Tour and the Australian road cycling titles. Despite a couple of second places in D grade club races he is still not quite as fast as Cadel!

Good morning everyone. I hope you are all bright eyed and bushy tailed. Grab yourselves a coffee or a cuppa and settle in for the next couple of hours because the racing on the track is going to be fast and furious. Things will get underway shortly.

No radios, no power metres, no heart rate monitors, just good old fashioned guts, intelligence and feel. Amen to that!

Can Chris Froome become the greatest Tour de France rider of all?

Agree on Quintana. He is not turning out to be the rider we all thought he might be. Still plenty of years left for him to turn it around though. I hope he does!

That’s very true Andy. Their professionalism and preparation is second to none.

Can Chris Froome become the greatest Tour de France rider of all?

Yeah, it’s almost impossible to compare those riders but it was an interesting exercise to try. Each were so different. By the way, I was not suggesting that Froome could become the best rider of all time (no one will ever surpass Merckx), but that he could become the greatest Tour de France rider of all time.

Yes, he relies on his team a lot, but he can still do the extraordinary, such as that crazy downhill attack or that breakaway with Sagan. You know what? I reckon even if he was isolated on climbs he’d still have the ability to hold off most of those attacking him. He has developed into a supreme talent and his confidence in getting the job done is growing with his ever increasing experience. He is a class act.

Yet you still bother to comment Rob G?

Can Chris Froome become the greatest Tour de France rider of all?

I think Porte went along way to proving that he can be a genuine contender at this year’s race. He was one of the few to attack Porte and perhaps the only one who didn’t drop away towards the end of the toughest climbs. I think he took a step in the right direction.

Can Chris Froome become the greatest Tour de France rider of all?

Hi G, I think Brailsford and Froome have been asked those question constantly over the past four years. We can only comment on what we are watching and believe that it is fair dinkum until proven otherwise. Unfortunately now every time someone does something spectacular our first response is to suspect that something is out of the ordinary. I think the only way some of the sceptics will be silenced is if the peloton trundles about at 30kms an hour and no one attacks or breaks away. Yep, I’ve seen things happen that raises my eyebrows as well, but nothing appeared too suspect at this particular Tour. It is ok to question the state of affairs before us, but having some belief in what we are watching is ok too! As it stands, Froome is a three time Tour winner. Until I am told otherwise, then I stand by what I have written.

Can Chris Froome become the greatest Tour de France rider of all?

Yeah, it’s funny Don. I can’t warm to team Sky either and yet I am a fan of Froome. I love his unpredictableness and I think he is quite humble when he speaks. He should really be a square peg trying to fit into a round hole at Sky, but somehow it seems to work.

Can Chris Froome become the greatest Tour de France rider of all?

Neither Armstrong or US Postal are recognised as Tour winners anymore. So I guess Sky lead US Postal 4-0 and Froome leads Armstrong 3-0. That whole Armstrong period is now a Tour de France wasteland and I’m quite comfortable leaving the record books for that time blank.

Unfortunately I think you are right Cugel!

Tour de Farce: Froome forced to RUN to the finish line in complete debacle

I feel sorry for Thomas de Gendt as well. His win has been forgotten about in all this too! When we think back on this stage it will be the Froome/Porte/Mollema incident that we remember, not de Gendt! That’s harsh.

Tour de Farce: Froome forced to RUN to the finish line in complete debacle

I don’t think Froomey was thinking very clearly when he took off on his run. Anger and adrenalin had taken over. Yes, the trio would have gained a few more time, but that is impossible to estimate. Under the circumstances, I think the organisers came to the best conclusion.

Tour de Farce: Froome forced to RUN to the finish line in complete debacle

Yeah, as much as I would love to see Adam Yates go into the yellow jersey, it would have been by default had the provisional results stood last night. I am sure he wouldn’t have been comfortable accepting it either. I couldn’t believe what I was watching. What a farce. More embarrassement for cycling.

Tour de Farce: Froome forced to RUN to the finish line in complete debacle

I think the seven kilometres of the climb that they didn’t do still had barriers, so they could have moved at least part of that further down the mountain. I suppose the shortening of the climb also saw the supporters bunched up more, eg they had seven less kilometres to spread out along. Lets hope the organisers learn something from this and take steps to ensure that it doesn’t happen again.

Tour de Farce: Froome forced to RUN to the finish line in complete debacle

I actually felt sick in the stomach at the end of that stage. Sick in the stomach and angry. It was an absolute joke. To have the biggest bike race in the world potentially ruined by disrespectful fans makes cycling a laughing stock. The riders deserve better.

Tour de Farce: Froome forced to RUN to the finish line in complete debacle

I think they have given Foome and Porte the same finishing time as Mollema.

2016 Tour de France: Chris Froome runs to the top of Mont Ventoux on Stage 12

Yes, I was looking forward to seeing what Quintana might do today, but with the shortened climb he may keep his powder dry until the Alps. I think he is a better climber than Froome as well, but he won’t want to lose too much time to the Sky leader in tomorrow’s ITT.

Le Tour: Impey sets up Matthews and sets the example for Orica-BikeExchange

Disappointed to hear that the Mont Ventoux climb will not be ridden in its entirety tonight due to the high winds being forecast. Still, the safety of the riders must come first. Will be interested to see if the shortening of the climb changes the approach of the GC riders.

Hi Glyn. Yeah, the article was written before I saw stage nine. Glad to hear that His Nibs was pulling his weight.

I reckon he’s a monty for the Vuelta now.

Rest day ramblings: The good, the bad and the ugly of the 2016 Tour de France

Yeah, I’m ready to embrace the change. I especially enjoy McEwen’s take on things. I like Phil and Paul, but Phil’s increasing inaccuracies are becoming harder to excuse.

Rest day ramblings: The good, the bad and the ugly of the 2016 Tour de France

Everyone is waiting for Quintana to make his move, and to win he’ll have to make one at some stage, especially with Froome likely to gain more time on the first time trial. But when will it happen? Oh, the suspense! How spectacular would it be to see him put in a dig on the slopes of Mont Ventoux? I’d like to see that.

Rest day ramblings: The good, the bad and the ugly of the 2016 Tour de France

There is no doubt that the injuries Contador received on day one courtesy of that nasty slide across a traffic island were more serious than he has let on. He is not the rider he once was, but there is no way he would have lost the time he did had he been fully fit. Is it really the end of Alberto? Or will this unfinished business at the Tour tempt him to postpone retirement for one more year? I still think he will call it quits, but it wouldn’t surprise if he saddled up once again. But yes, it was a disappointing way for him to leave the Tour.
