The best batsman should be at 3.

Warner and Bancroft are floundering

Burns scored 170, 3.5 years ago against Boult and co. on a wicket when Aus made over 500 and NZ made 370 against a strong Aussie attack. The wicket was probably not a difficult one to bat on. Likely not like the wickets we face in England at the mo. Is that Burns example a good one to use when arguing for inclusion on seaming English wickets against a much stonger attack in August 2019?

Warner and Bancroft are floundering

Burns would have done no better than Bangers

Warner and Bancroft are floundering

That is why one needs to look behind the stats when doing comparisons. Otherwise one is usually comparing oranges with lemons. Doing well in Aussie land against weak attacks (Burns) does not mean Burns is better than a guy who did OK in Aussie land against a strong attack (Harris). Harris has a better, tighter technique than Burns (and Bangers-n-mash for that matter) and should have been selected to partner the Warnermeister

Warner and Bancroft are floundering

I am with you. Labuschagne also gives us a much-needed extra bowler. Smith could bat at 3 also and Lab at 4

Warner and Bancroft are floundering

Burns has 3 hundreds on Australian roads against average bowling attacks and one in NZ against an average attack. Weaker quality attacks and different conditions to what Bangers and co are facing now.

Joe Burns? Come off the grass. He does not have a better opener’s technique than Bancroft. Harris has the best opener’s technique of those 3 and should have been selected B4 Bangers. On Warner, they should persist because he has the ability. Our problem is not batting but bowling. Only the very best batsman do well against good length bowling. We would have got them out for 150 had our bowlers bowled the same length as Broad and co. Instead the ego got the best of our quicks and they went short. The result? A weaker batting line up than ours got 250 odd after being sent in on a tricky wicket. Are you with me fellas?

Warner and Bancroft are floundering

I do not agree with Bangers selection over Harris. The reasons? Harris performed quite well at test level against a very good attack and made runs in England. Bangers did well against county attacks and played 1 good innings against his mates on a difficult pitch. Harris was the incumbent. It sent a bad signal to other incumbents by going with Bangers over a guy who had done nothing wrong and was in form. How to solve the problem? OUT Bangers IN Harris

Warner and Bancroft are floundering

Aussies were lucky to lose only 1 last night as the English bowled a better length than we did and we had a bit of luck. Unfortunately, I think we will be out cheaply today. Are you with me fellas?

Hazlewood fires in Ashes comeback

It isn’t rocket surgery – the only thing the Aussies have to do is play better than the poms

Australia must stay grounded as success in UK begins to beckon

England have too many bits and pieces players in their test team. We have more specialists. The result? We are better at test (real) cricket than they are. We will win the Ashes. No worries.

The Ashes balance has shifted as Lord's duel looms

One time out of the 4 they did not fall apart after test 1. Being a glass half full guy I predict this series will make it 2 out of the last 5 they did not fall apart after test 1. Are you with me fellas?

Australia must shed overseas yips to win the Ashes

Looks like Hazelnut is in and they will persist with Bangers. We REALLY need a decent all-rounder.

Pattinson left out of second Test squad with Starc, Hazlewood included

Here’s hoping they play all 4 speedsters and the GOAT. Drop Bangers-and-Mash and open with Khawaja. Cummins at 7? No worries!

Lord's set to be a happy hunting ground again for Australia

Aussies will suck the blood out of Leach’s bowling

England name Archer, Leach for second Test

We need more firepower – don’t go all conservative when you are in front – take risks! Fortune favors the brave. So: OUT Bangers, IN Starc. Starc bats below Cummins, Patto at 7. No worries. Are you with me?

Langer: Batting settled, bowling spots up for grabs at "flat" Lord's

Let’s go the whole hog and drop Cummins for M Marsh, Smith for S Marsh and make M Marsh captain

Why the Aussie selectors should drop Nathan Lyon and pick four quicks at Lord's

Thanks Arvind. No-one would disagree with skill differences on the field being the key issue in deciding the outcome of a sports game. Your proposal however is not about skill differences on the field, rather, it is about skill about skill differences off the field, namely differences in the ability to forecast, barter, mathematics, and so on. That is why I would prefer to leave those skills to the business world and other areas (gambling?) and keep cricket match outcomes based on skills on the field, as far as possible ????

A better alternative to cricket's coin toss

Good point. Bradman also has the highest median score

Not even Steve Smith can catch Don Bradman

A coin toss is fair because the outcome is based on luck and that is all. Luck forms an important part of the best game in the world, namely test cricket. Some examples: 1. one team is 9 for 100 chasing 400 and rain comes and the game is ultimately drawn 2. A star player is accidentally injured through no fault of his own on the eve of a game 3. A short leg fielder turns his back as he sees the batsman wind up for a full-blooded pull and the ball lodges in the fielder’s legs and the batsman is out…and there are many more examples where luck alone can dramatically alter the course of the game or a series for that matter. Why leave the element of luck in the game? Because it is more interesting!

A better alternative to cricket's coin toss

Some are trying to make Archer seem better than he is.

Archer can have a big impact on the Ashes

Best batsmen of all time: Bradman 1st, daylight 2nd and who are the next in line is where one can debate. For mine: Hobbs, Sobers, Steve Smith and Graeme Pollock a dead heat for 3rd. Kallis, Lara, Tendulkar, Viv Richards, Barry Richards a dead heat for 4th

Not even Steve Smith can catch Don Bradman

Harris should have played instead of Bangers in Test 1. The reasons? 1. He had performed better and for a longer period than Bangers. 2. He was the incumbent test opener so a strange signal is sent to other incumbents by not selecting him after doing OK.

Harris keeps pressure on Bancroft with unbeaten half-century

Yeah let’s hope he fixes it soon – unlike S Marsh who was a slasher his whole career and kept getting selected. In any case Head is a far better option than Handscomb and M Marsh in the middle order
