WOW. I didnt think it would go that way.
I cant see how the DOCA can be successful.
1. They have to sue the RA.
2. RA has to give them their licence back. Unlikely given point 1.
3. Contingent on the ATO releasing the directors of their personal liabilities of $11.5mil
This is unlikely as the ATO didn’t support the DOCA. Given the current environment, it wouldn’t be a good look for the ATO to forgive a sporting team while going after SMEs.

Any news on the DOCA vote?

I have always thought that if it was practical, the Reds should go back to Ballymore and Waratahs to Leichhardt for the majority of games.
The small grounds create a better atmosphere. This in turn should grow the attendance by providing a better experience.
Then teams could have blockbuster games at the bigger stadiums.

PE backed consortium 'in final stages' to save Melbourne Rebels with $30m injection and link with A-League club

The key point in this announcement for me is The consortium is Looking to raise $20-$30mil. It doesn’t have the money yet. Given the tight time frames this may not get up.
If it does get up how many player and staff have already made commitments else where.

Speaking of Subs. Why does the game stop for substitutions? They could enter the field in back play via a touchy.
Stopping for injuries is also a massive waste of time. Unless the injured player is in danger of being run it or a cart is needed play on.

If a props injured and you cant scrum free kick to the opposition or uncontested scrum. If the hookers injured and can’t throw use some one else.

Seriously do we have to go down this path? Its stupid and childish.
Lets stick to the topic.

Shouldn’t that be the PWC ACT Brumbies?

ANALYSIS: The Rebels aren't going down without a fight - and they might drag Rugby Australia down with them

If the Rebels’ reported debt level is true, they will fold. When they do, RA Should insist the Brumbies expand to include Victoria – The Southern Brumbies. Split games between cities. It increases the Brumbies market, commercial opportunities and talent pool. It may also keep the Vic Govt onside. It also concentrates the talent into 4 teams in Australia.

Brumbies shut down talk of following Rebels into voluntary administration

I’d argue that Ben Kenedy was the biggest loss to Australian Rugby

Hi Nick,

The lack of playing time is in part caused by the Super Franchises and RA.
When the Reds are playing very few players from outside the match day 23 are sent to play in the QPR (Premier Rugby). Those who do play are often restricted to arbitrary and nonsensical playing time. e.g. 23 minutes or 1 half, the reason provided is due to “load”.
Following the U20s World Cup players were initially told they could not participate in the QPR despite not playing for almost 10 days.
At the same time similar-age rugby league players, Selwyn Cobbo and Reece Walsh played the State of Origin on Wednesday and played for the Bronco’ 3 days later.

In The Qld Cup, the Broncos send their non-game day players to their respective feeder clubs Souths – Logan and Wynnum with the mandate that players get as much game time as possible.

In think the Brothers/ Wallabies hooker Matt Fesler hadn’t played a game for 6-8 weeks before his Wallaby debut. Surely game time and playing finals would have benefitted him…..So much for Eddie and RA supporting club rugby but that’s another story.

The only way for the player to get better is to play. Obviously, the NRL Clubs recognise this and prioritise playing time over Gym time.

I know this doesn’t address the issue of more competitive games but it does allow or promote more playing time.

I would encourage you to reach out to Premier Grade coaches in QLD and NSW and I am sure they will share even more ludicrous stories.

Why would you get players from a broken system to review the broken system?

Its the same as promoting players from a broken system to become a coach in the broken system.

It is the perfect example of complete bloody insanity!

Carl,
A great article. Having been through the same experience with my son I have to say RL provides more bang for your buck.
Most important is the amount of time the kids get to play footy. That is time spent catching, passing, tackling and running in the different codes. RL definitely allows for more time playing, this in turn allows more skill development, game understanding etc.
Kids are playing less and less touch football (and other games) during and after school. I would say this further restricts skill development.
In my experience, once players get to U12 -13 any chance of development is eroded by coaches in both codes prioritising game plans, shape and tactics and developing robots, not creative players.

Rugby union vs rugby league: A footy dad's 'little experiment'

I agree Piru.

It would be like an under-7s game. A kid goes down injured and the coach says ok you will have to come off. Miraculously the kid jumps up and off he goes.

The Wrap: Wallabies are on their way home - can they please take the TMOs with them?

I also agree with ” TMO only speaks when the referee asks them to check something they think they’ve missed. Otherwise, review pedantically after the match”

To speed the game up can I add 2 suggestions?

1. Don’t stop the game for injured players. Play on and let the medical staff do their Job unless the injured player is in the way of the game. This includes the set piece.

2. Dont stop the game for substitutions. Surel;y this can be managed by the Assistant Ref or 3rd official.

Great analysis.
