At the very least give them a go in a meaningless match. It serves the team better if they are exposed to Test cricket rather than waiting for an injury or a retirement. Get the feeling the NSW quartet all wanted to be a part of Davey’s last game.

Cummins cleans up again but Pakistan recover from collapse with wagging tail frustrating Aussies

Agree, ideally I’d like Green at four.

Giving Green light to opener experiment could work - but that doesn’t mean it’s the right option

Home side’s are dominating everywhere. Apparently StA are minnows now and India are Powerhouses according to you Paul. Just explain to me who was the minnow in their first test Paul?

Test Mortem: Age just a number for 'Dads Army' Aussies, Cummins the ultimate skeleton key, MCG from worst to best

I wouldn’t mind if Marnus opened.

Race in four: McDonald narrows down Warner replacements, strongly hints at all-rounder's return

If they caught Marsh, they were a great chance of getting the W. Awesome to see a bit of fight from a very underdone team and furthermore, well done to South Africa who absolutely destroyed a far more experienced outfit. A good week for all the doomsayers of test cricket to just sit back and take a breath. What we’ve just seen is further proof we need to gift the touring teams the choice of batting or bowling, too often the home sides are getting up.

'Technology curse': Pakistan director slams 'inconsistent' umpiring after contentious DRS call cruels hopes of famous win

So much for the chasm between the so called big three Paul?! South Africa obliterated India and Pakistan did mighty well against Aus. I think the big issue is the home side dominance. We’ve gotta ditch the coin flip for starters. It was good to see a bit of fight from the less cashed up teams.

Worth keeping around: No way Carey’s spot should be in jeopardy despite recent lack of runs

Well, he was never gonna pick Bancroft now was he?

Warner nominates surprise option to replace him at opener as Pakistan again let Aussies slip through their fingers

Agree, and they have a pretty good bowling line up as it is. Just need to unearth a couple of bat’s.

Multi-format contests loom as better option for most opponents than only playing fait accompli Test series

Hard to say since they’ve only been playing home series again since 2019. I was basing it off the difficulties the Test champion’s had securing a tight one nil win. Bazball certainly caught them off guard. For context they have had six series at home since 19. Securing three wins, 2 losses and a draw.

Gap's never been wider between cricket’s Big Three haves and the have-nots ... and it’s only getting worse

I’d hate to see South Africa fall off the cliff and I don’t think their new priorities will help their prospects, however I still think it’s possible they are just in a down period. They had a good Cup and have plenty of good quicks. It’s not fair to write them off just yet. NZ are as good as they’ve ever been in their history. Pakistan are very difficult in Pakistan and terrible abroad(so what’s changed?). The rest are minnows. Of course we miss the Windie’s but it could have been worse. We lost one superpower, but another has sprung up in India. I’m not sure there has ever been more than three genuine Test power’s operating at the same time. I think more needs to be done to help touring teams. No more coin toss, visiting teams decide. Also pitch doctoring has got out of hand.

It won’t make the Dee’s feel any better, the consequences of that ‘smother’ meant they were pushing the proverbial uphill for the next three and a half quarters. Sin bin was the only fair result for the losing team.

AFL proposes 'Maynard rule' amid careless contact crackdown: 'We were not content with the outcome'

Exactly Gilberto, but then again they would like to think it was overturned on a technicality when the reality was they just too gutless.

AFL proposes 'Maynard rule' amid careless contact crackdown: 'We were not content with the outcome'

Most predictable off season rule tweak you’ll ever see. Didn’t have the stones to suspend him during the finals, yet he would have had a month off it it was round one. Weak as water, but we’ve seen it time and again. Credibility has never been a high priority.

AFL proposes 'Maynard rule' amid careless contact crackdown: 'We were not content with the outcome'

Yes Barb, Except his bowling numbers are just plain ordinary. There’s no hiding from it. Don argues, it’s because he hasn’t bowled enough. He also says he’s been elite at shield level. The numbers say otherwise. The numbers in F/C cricket suggest what I’ve been saying, he’s a batting all rounder. The test numbers are middling in both. He’s very handy when you consider his batting and fielding talents, but he isn’t a true all rounder yet.

It's a scary thought ... but what if Australian selectors are right to play long game with Test team succession plan?

Actually, tail end bowling is a unique skill set. One I’d argue Starc has perfected. I like Green, but at what stage do you entertain the idea that his stats are poor, because he hasn’t bowled that well as opposed to him not bowling enough? He looks like a batting all rounder to me.

If any of those three are fit this summer, they should be given a go.

Otherwise you risk wasting the next big talent.

I don’t mind the set and forget if the team is ultra dominant, but the much lauded trio of quicks haven’t got it done against India at home or away. And they haven’t got it done in England after several attempts. Now I know the pitches we dished up to India were not exactly to advantage, but at what stage do you keep repeating the same tactics? The bowlers have shown fatigue after the first few tests. I think the two fringe Sandgropers need to play games when fit. We won’t lose much if they play, they are very good and will be better with the exposure. Batting wise, I was hoping Matt Short would ascend, however he hasn’t earned it. Middle order depth is lacking.

Yet Warners continued selection isn’t exactly his own fault. He’s been labelled arrogant for wanting to play on by Mitch, but really he has accepted he might be dropped.

'Bunnings would sell out of sandpaper': Bailey reacts after Johnson delivers brutal sledge over 'arrogant' Warner's farewell

Warner’s just stated what he’d like to do, whether he gets it or not isn’t decided by him. He seems to accept that as well, so I’m not sure about Mitch’s comments. Clearly no affection for the little fella though, which is hardly surprising. Polarising figure.
Mitch insinuates bias, yet was guilty of sticking up for his mate Langer, when in reality I think the axeing was spot on.

That forward line looks scary, that’s if by some miracle they all stay fit(injury prone players galore). Very good team, especially compared to the Crows one!

2023 Best 23s: More new guns than they know what to do with, how do the Lions fit everyone in?

Agree Scuba, they actually were a tad thin on the midfield front. Those two are huge inclusions.

I assume you think the same as Renshaw then, since they’ve both had stints for AUS and Handscomb did better statistically.

FLEM'S VERDICT: Agar's turn to prove he can be Test spinner but Renshaw selection over Handscomb a weird one

Handscomb is regarded as one of our best players of spin so that’s a bit strange to use India as a negative. Also still in his twenties, 29 is generally your prime. Agree Renshaw is a good choice though, just not the knock on Handscomb.

FLEM'S VERDICT: Agar's turn to prove he can be Test spinner but Renshaw selection over Handscomb a weird one

Glad to see I wasn’t the only one who thought Handscomb was stiff to miss out to Renshaw. Has a better Test record and has the most Shield runs this, after making the most overall last year as well. Apparently that’s because he plays at the Junction oval, but I’d argue he’s improved his game like most do at his age. Great fielder as well.
