He was asked on a Triple M show last year how to pronounce it, and he said Fan-ta-see-ah. He also said he was long experienced in people mispronouncing his surname.

Just say his name right, BT

Main negatives are Brayshaw, Katich and possibly Hodge. Slater could be good if he isn’t expected to play a role like 9 asked him to.

Seven make history as Alison Mitchell signs on as cricket commentator

Part of what helps the second tier at the moment is those fringe first grade players who drop down to NSW/QLD Cup. Take the top 6-10 players out of those sides (as the NRL clubs would still need a squad, and it could be even more than that) and is the second division as enticing?

If new NRL franchises are coming through the second tier, how should it look?

It’s a great clip.

“Watch the football! Watch it! It’s going to move!”

Would you watch rugby league all year round?

As a multi-sports fan, my interest in Nines over summer would be minimal, as A-League and cricket take precedence, then add in some NFL and tennis, plus overseas football (tv rights depending), and there’s no space in my planner.

Herein lies the problem, as I see it: People claim saturation makes interest wane, but marketing types say too long a time without a presence leads to problems when the new season starts up again. So sporting orgs end up with these conflicting opinions and often are left hamstrung and not knowing what to do.

Would you watch rugby league all year round?

Yes, sport mixes with politics and religion in various places (I’ve even written an piece on religion and sport http://www.theroar.com.au/2012/04/23/id-like-to-thank-god-can-sport-and-religion-live-together/). And yes, Izzy has every right to voice his opinion, as Josh does to voice his opinion on Izzy’s opinion. If I may, let me voice my opinion on Josh’s opinion on Izzy’s opinion…

I think that Josh takes a real surface-level read of Folau’s tweet and what he’s expressing. The main problem is an inability to consider how someone you disagree with comes to their opinion (and this is happening all over the SSM debate, on both sides). Yes, many with religious convictions regarding marriage see it as a society-wide thing, not just something for within their community. Yes, many (myself included) see SSM as inevitable and are working out how to navigate the waters.

Yes, it may feel contradictory to to hear people say that they respect and care for people whilst also not affirming SSM, but it is possible.

Josh, I don’t know you and you don’t know me, but if you’re ever in Sydney and wanted to talk sport, SSM, religion and everything in between over a beer, drop me a line. Ultimately, this discussion is done best in person and worst over the impersonal internet.

Sorry Izzy, but respect and support go hand in hand

Bit of a ridiculous article. The unrest among supporters has been bubbling away for five years. And it’s more than the lack of attack, though that is a very visible problem.

It’s about the appointments of Price and McGregor, extending Price’s contract before and tangible evidence of performance, the jobs for the boys culture, the lack of transparency, the incredible restrictions on voting for football club and leagues club directors, the list goes on. Doust answers to no one and is teflon, surely he can see the writing on the wall. McGregor has shown his inability to understand what coaching first grade is about. His reliance on stats in justifying performance is mind-boggling.

Sure, other clubs have problems too. But the potential of where the club could/should have gone after 2010 has been missed by a long way.

The Dragons are the soft disaster story of 2016

But then Sam Stosur usually gets a decent run if she goes well. Maybe it’s that we’ve only got space for one top female player… which is no better

Dellacqua's disgraceful treatment speaks volumes for Aussie sport

If Johnson bowls well, we just start criticising his choice of body art…

What if Mitchell Johnson bowls well?

Still trying to work out why we can’t attract one or two clubs to do a 3 or 4 game tour here. We have good training facilities and imagine the buzz that could be created by hosting a good European club in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth/Adelaide. Let’s make it happen.

A-League All Stars idea worth sticking with

Not getting how you claim the Essendon clash jersey makes things worse.

Having said that, the system does need to be fixed. Not Jeff’s idea of ‘you changed so we shouldn’t have to’, but a proper system of primary and alternate/clash guernsey, just like almost every other sporting code has. It’s especially important in a game like AFL where the teams are intermingled rather than being in opposing lines.

I don’t mind if Collingwood’s jerseys are both black and white stripes, as long as the away guernsey is worn with white shorts and the white content makes it a predominately white guernsey. Carlton and Melbourne do it well, St Kilda get the concept right but their efforts over the years haven’t been the greatest (maybe bring back the logo design with a red back panel?), Brisbane and Sydney do it well, Port and Freo do well with their white V options. And they still look like they are the clubs they are.

Besides, look on the bright side: the AFL could make teams wear colours that aren’t on their palettes, like some away kits in football…

AFL guernsey clashes are just a total farce

Only problem is Japan and Sth Korea seasons go Feb-Nov (or thereabouts)

Scrap the A-League finals and replace it with State of Origin

No, no, a thousand times no. SOO isn’t for football. If you want to get rid of the finals, bring on the FFA Cup. But even then, it may not be the end of the finals system.

That’s a good one. I really like it.

I think Surname has trialed with every club, including the Fury and Gold Coast…

In Newcastle, history Jets into fashion

Newcastle have now had two away kits with historical significance. The black and white stripes is the traditional kit of Northern NSW and now they pay tribute to KB. It’s a pretty smart kit as well. It’d be great to see if other clubs can do similar, either with kits from local rep teams or former clubs. It can’t happen everywhere (e.g. SFC and WSW won’t be able to take an old NSL kit) but there are possibilities.

Maybe look to have a round where the rich footballing heritage in Australia is acknowledged?

That’s why they have the buses. Mind you, if you’re making a death run along ANZAC Parade, you’re doing it wrong.

How to increase crowd numbers in the NRL

Crap. It’s 15 minutes walk from Central station, 5 minutes on the special event bus. There are always buses for games and the walk back to Central is easy as.

Cheaper tickets (maybe not $10/head but $15 is reasonable) might work. But when will people realise that you can take your own food to the game? I always take stuff and save myself good money. I only typically buy a soft drink or two at the ground.

SFS is due for an upgrade, things like foldup seats are overdue. Only problem is they can’t expand past 50k, which I what I think they would want to do. 55k in a rectangular stadium would be great.

Cheap Seats Podcast: episode one

Come on now! There’s a difference between NRL (where some guys put in an effort to look nice, but their skills will get them game time) and the LFL (which trades primarily on the appearance of their ‘players’, even after the ‘change’ in their uniforms, which was really just a removal of garter belts and playing in something more like a sports bra than lingerie). Yes, they’re talented athletes, but they’re in the comp first of all because they don’t mind putting their boobs on display. It’s the same reason I have little interest in beach volleyball, because the main thing promoters want is hot chicks in skimpy bikinis.

If I want true female athletes, I’ll look to the W-League, the female cricketers, the WNBL among others. Women who are on the sporting field first and foremost because of their ability.

Welcome to the Legends Football League

Sorry, but when you pregame routine includes hair and make-up, it will not have my support. Get the girls wearing something that more resembles an NFL uniform and I might pay attention. For now, it’s just another sport trading on chicks in bikinis.

20 games mean 7 seasons at the top: 2012,11,10,09,08,07,06. No way would he have got that close. It’s only been in the last 3 years that he has really had a shot. Before then his defensive frailties were too large.

Merritt third in line for NSW, says Daley

Merritt would not have played 30 games, he hasn’t been a form player for 10 seasons (he debuted in 2002 and there were the forgotten years at Cronulla). But even if he was, are you saying you would have played him ahead of all of the following players:
Tiquiri
Walker
Tate
Bowen
Hunt
Folau
Inglis
Boyd
?
