The short punchy climbs and quick, sweeping descents have the effect of stretching the bunch into smaller groups, making it harder to organise a cohesive chase group. I’m often wrong but the break has my money

I think they might. It’s not the sort of terrain that will assist the peloton

Unconfirmed but Mark Cavendish is said to be off the back as the peloton hits the steeper climbs within the final 60km. Max climb of 15% through this section!

Just for you D-Dawg… creams are criket trousers… that get lots of grass stains! I won’t try and explain the rest of cricket to a Canadian!

Gap to the break is steady at 6 and a half mins with Liquigas still doing the work on the front. My feeling is this break might stay away with the steeper climbs coming very soon. Once Liquigas get bored with doing everyone elses work, other teams might not be bothered to try if the escapees can’t be brought back

Liqugas all back on the front again. The teams who aren’t in the break seem to be getting a bit twitchy but are content on letting Liquigas do the work

65km to go and gap up to 6’20”. As I said this was goign to happen due to the peloton having a collective pee. They still have the distance to pull the break back but the punchy climbs to follow will hamper that bunch charge.

The camera man seems facinated with the grass stains on the back of Jack Bauer! Ok, he rolled in some grass… it’s not important. My creams would blow his mind after 50 overs!

Pablo Lastras has retired due to his crash. Nobody really knows how he crashed but possibly overcooking it on a corner.

They showed him with torn shorts but he’s still in the break. He worked hard yesterday

The breaks gap will be about to go up as the peloton slow for ‘a call of nature’. “The pink jersey is back in the peloton, let’s have a pee to celebrate”, said one Fanese Vini rider

Liquigas have been powering onthe front since the start of the Passo della Cappella climb. Maybe Basso is concerned about the time the break have.

73km to go and the breakaway has 4’21”. There are some strong riders up there, including Jack Bauer, but they are going to have to work hard together to stay away.

I’m surprised not to see a Team Sky jersey in the break today. The rolling terrain and hard racing seems perfect for Ian Stannard, Jez Hunt or Geraint Thomas to make a move. Clearly shows that the teams think this can end up in a bunch sprint and they want to look after Cav

Alan Piper, Garmin-Barracuda DS has said that Jack Bauer will be the first sacrificial lamb in an attempt to retain the pink jersey. I’m sure Jack is thrilled with that after putting in such a big effort trying to bring Ty back to the bunch yesterday. I doubt if Navardauskas can keep it but if they are clever Robbie Hunter could be in pink tonight.

86km to go and the break have… well they have a gap. Italian TV is not showing the time gap… but there is a gap. Answers on a postcard

Ramunas Navardauskas (GAR) in pink is off the back of the peloton. He did not seem at all confident with retaining the jersey today in the post stage 5 interviews. He said he might keep it if the peloton rode slowly (or words to that effect). Thats self confidence for you!

The peloton are over the unpaved climb and onto the sketchy looking descent. The undulating nature of today’s profile will not be to the liking of anyone who is the greatest (bravest) of descenders.

Pablo Lastras (MOV) is reported to have fallen on the strada bianche whilst in the break. He was trying to make a move with Rubiano (AND) and is still being tended to on the ground. Hopefully he will be ok and can tag on the back of the peloton.

The peloton seem unphased by the breakaway riders and should be on the ‘strada bianche’ about now.
Giro d'Italia Stage 6: Live updates, blog
There are 11 riders in the breakaway up the road with 93km to go. Benedetti (APP) Rubiano (AND) Malori (LAM) Dyachenko (AST) Rollin (FDJ) Bauer (GRM) Kuschynski & Smukulis (KAT) Lastras (MOV)/Golas (OPQ)/Roberts (SAX).

It looks like live pictures from stage 6 may be a little delayed. Eurosport are showing pictures from yesterday via a feed so we wait with anticipation

Jack Bauer is starting to fall off the back of the breakaway group and Navardauskas is looking like he ate too many tacos in the feed station. He’s pooped!
