'I've just won a stage of the Tour de France, mate!': Hindley grabs yellow jersey as Aussie blows Tour apart

Robbie McEwen has confirmed to Het Nieuwsblad on Tuesday that the Amgen Tour of California will be his final race as a professional rider for GreenEDGE before moving onto a planned coaching role within the team.
“I am definitely done after the Tour of California”, said McEwen.
The GreenEDGE teams’ debut season has already seen success at the Tour Down Under, Volta a Catalunya and Tour of the Basque Country, but McEwen, the skilled veteran sprinter, has been unable to provide the top-flight results for which a rider of his calibre is renowned.
However there had always been plans for McEwen to move into a coaching role at the team, and since the announcement it has seemed like an opportunity for a ‘last hurrah’ assisting the squad through the Classics season, rather than a serious attempt at race wins.
But who would deny one of the sport’s most exciting and energetic characters that opportunity?
Speaking to the Belgian newspaper on Tuesday, McEwen played down his back-room role saying, “Personally, I don’t see myself as a DS. Of course you can never say never, but at the moment I think the role I’ve got is perfect for me.”
With the extensive palmares that Robbie McEwen has to his name you would not bet against him moving into a directeur sportif role in the future, but for now it’s time to enjoy the man’s ego while we can still see it in all its glory within the pro peloton.
Chapeau Robbie, thanks for the memories.
