Erm, this trope has been thrashed to death. Not going to happen. Nor should it. Move on.

Australia's winners, losers and improvers for Super Rugby 2016

A homecoming? To celebrate … what? Coming second? Let’s be clear about this, we LOST. Yep, the Wallabies did an enormous amount to restore the lustre and joy that had gone missing, and that is nothing to sneer at or diminish. But we LOST. Which means there’s a helluva lot more work to be done in Australian rugby, particularly in building up the grassroots. Let’s not settle for second.

ARU, where was the welcome home for the Wallabies?

Hahaha. I noticed that one, too, but just assumed it was a reference to some mysterious Gallic welcoming gesture.

Is Australia being Cheika-mated?

Or, having taken Australia from sixth to second within twelve months, it could be said that Cheika did well enough to warrant selection.

Either way, I’m pretty fed up with the churlishness of much of the commentary, especially from some of you on the other side of the ditch. You won already. Strive for grace. If that’s too much to ask, try silence.

Is Australia being Cheika-mated?

True, but Beale will never be 192cm and able to kick beyond 45 metres.

Five talking points from the Rugby World Cup final

10 – Jack Debreczini. Under Larkham’s tutelage for the next few years, this bloke could become our best 10 yet. Anyone who kicks 55+ metres off the tee and can ghost through the line a la Bernie in his prime has to be nurtured and brought on.

As for some of the older hands in your list, they couldn’t make it into this squad, and they shouldn’t make it into the next one. But who knows what sort of talent is waiting to be discovered between now and 2019 with the right systems and a coordinated approach between the provinces.

But for the ARU’s myopia, it probably would have been Paul Alo-Emile.

How about you just go and check that your boys haven’t left any man bags, earrings or makeup purses on the pitch? – those things could take an eye out if they’re still there at the end of the ‘Not-Rugby’ season.

Fairly and well stated, Chook. I agree with every word, (including the praise for you, Patrick, for this and every other piece written by you over the last 45 or do days.)

The All Blacks have set the high-water mark in sheer overall excellence – skills coupled with physicality; the right game plan for the right moments; execution thereof and decision-making under pressure; continual growth as a team and individuals; development of future players and leaders. All carried out with a quiet determination and genuine humility.

Note to the ARU: You’re Doing It Wrong.

Yesterday, you nearly did me in.

Today, you’ve got my spirit soaring again.

Thank you, sir, very much. Vive la rugby

Losing in London: A long day in the city

Is contributing your incisive wisdom to this forum part of your therapy or simply a condition of your parole, ole son?

Either way, in the immortal words of this article’s author, you’re getting more closer to hurting our feelings.

But still not very close.

Oh, pool of death, wilt thou drown now Australia?

Excellent work, Chook

Whereas it has only sharply increased in my mind what was hitherto a vague feeling of impending doom.

Well said!! Go rugby!

Richetty what? It's Richie McCaw, show some respect

Gold!

Feel better now?

Loges, well said. Very. And I well note that it is THIS team of 33 men that you correctly identify as being that of which we are proud, and it is THIS team that we want to play for themselves this weekend.

Not the ARU. Not Australian rugby at large. Just THIS team.

Yep, the whole shooting match needs to be looked at but Australian rugby and its myriad faults can wait a bit longer for our attention.

Let’s just celebrate THIS team and its wonderful ethos one last time.

After all, it is THIS team which has given Australian rugby the life support it so badly needed.

Some well thought-through points, C33. I especially agree with your first, assuming Sio can’t take the field. Otherwise, if Sio is fit, Smith for the bench in place of Slipper. Smith really sorted out the loosehead side when he came on, didn’t miss a single tackle, and made a great line break. Slips looked well out of sorts all day. And also strongly agree that Izzy can’t pretend he’s ok – he must be as close as damn to 100% or else he’s the obvious chink in our defensive system through which the Darkness will pour.

SPIRO: Game on! Wallabies or All Blacks to take permanent possession of 'Bill'

Hansen had a plan for the Puma/Wallaby game too? Genius, that bloke, pure genius.

Five talking points from the Wallabies' win over Argentina

Well, thanks for the sarcasm, mate, but my point wasn’t that the ABs game plan should have been more expansive; rather, simply that the two games were a real contrast due to, yes, largely, the conditions.

But do carry on….

Yep, just compare the metres run for both games – 800+ for the Puma/Wallabies cf. around 450 for the Bokke/ABs game.

Indeed! Right option, my eye. There was too much dumb kicking, of which that was an abject example. Folau’s kick into Kuridrani at a point when the Pumas had about 13 players concentrated into three or four channels was another. Make those sort of decisions next week and see what happens.

Good idea. Hadn’t thought of that. Hope those doctor-types can read.

Bill, I’m one of McMahon’s biggest backers and reckon he will end up one of the Wallaby greats, but I have to concede that TWAS and others are right about him not yet being a decent 7. He’s strong over the ball, sure, but he’s still learning the subtle things that differentiate the good jackals from the great. Like when to dive in and when to stay back. How close to the holding on line to push. If asked, he’ll give buckets. But Pocock he’s not.
