His off field and on field behaviour have definitely been disruptive. He got dumped from NSW because of poor form and a dumb sin-binning in back in 2019. Basically forced Fittler to drop him, and when he did he carried on like a pork chop and said he wouldn’t play for his state ever again. The Roosters did everything they could to look after him – Robbo and Politis were constantly going in to bat for him for a bunch off on and field dramas – and he petulantly pulled the pin when they wouldn’t sign his brother to the top 30. So he went to the Bunnies — who did sign his brother, paid him stupid amounts of money, and let him play full back. They sent him on an expensive overseas trip for rehab, let him head off to the farm whenever he wanted, and signed his best mate Jack Wighton when they couldn’t afford to. The list goes on. And he’s repaid them with a bucket load of unnecessary suspensions, a poor work ethic and and a selfish attitude regarding all the drama he’s brought to the club. You can’t say he hasn’t caused problems at Souths. He broke Manu’s face and cost himself and the team their best shot at a grand final. He got suspended last year and missed a critical game that could have got Souths into the finals. And he’s just been suspended again (with a heap of leniency many would say) at yet another vital juncture in Souths season. For their highest paid player and so called leader that is most definitely problematic. Let’s be real. A lot of teams – and the game itself – have bent over backwards to accommodate Trell. And he still carries on like he’s owed something. I reckon it’s high time he bent over backwards for his team mates and the game.

Why his latest ban could be best thing for Latrell’s career - or the beginning of the end

Mitchell has caused problems in every club he’s been at as well as rep sides. Anyone who coaches him is taking on so much more than a footballer. They’re taking on “Trell”. And I’m starting to think that’s almost too much to handle.

Why his latest ban could be best thing for Latrell’s career - or the beginning of the end

Agree. Love Big Mal, but if there’s such a thing as a ‘flat track bully’ coach Mal is it. Watching over fully functional Qld and Kangaroos rep sides is a lot different to stepping into the hot seat at Souths. It would be nothing less than a miracle if he could create success under those conditions.

Rabbitohs rubbish Meninga rumour as Cook admits he's 'frustrated, angry and sad' over losing his spot

I thought Jye Gray was being blooded as a half to succeed Walker? If JD wants to shake things up I’d be I’d be putting him in the halves. Mitchell to centre. Wighton to fullback. Walker to 7. Mamouzelos to 9.

It’s time for Souths to start taking stock of Mitchell’s contribution to the club. Plenty of injury time on the side-lines, needless suspensions at critical moments of multiple seasons, plenty of comments attracting heat in the press, accusations of favourable treatment causing disharmony in the ranks … Since he signed for the Rabbits the list of cons is looking larger than the pros. Is he really worth it?

The Bulldogs are the ultimate cautionary tale when it comes to financial management. And it’s hard to think they’ve learned their lesson from the massive deals they offered players like Foran and Woods who didn’t provide any return on investment. Ciraldo’s been at the helm for 2 years and the squad has basically been recycled twice. That’s a unique luxury for any coach – and pundits are now screaming for the club to splash cash on a new 7! I’m trying to think of a club that has ever successfully “bought themselves out of trouble”. Has it happened?

Getting value for money from stars is the biggest competitive advantage in the NRL - and the flip side can be devastating

Souths’ game plan is a Swiss watch. So many elements have to come together for it to work effectively. I actually think the game is starting to pass them by. There’s a lot to be said for a fast, ad-lib style of footy. Souths don’t have much speed and power in their outside backs – a problem they’ve long been ignoring – and there’s no real dynamic ball runners in their forwards. Kicking game is uber bland. Illias hasn’t set the world on fire but Cook escapes a lot of scrutiny. The mythology built up around the guy isn’t warranted. I can’t remember the last time I saw him run more than 10 metres. I’d be putting Peter Mamouzelos into 9. He seems a lot more instinctive in his dummy half play. Lot more guile than Cook. Dropping Cook is low risk and sends a message to the senior players to step up.

Too much to Bear: Danger signs emerge as Rabbitohs start to unravel after years of near-misses

Loving the confidence comrade! But for me our Bunnies backline looks woefully inadequate against that Broncos speed machine. Kennar, Milne, Gagai? It really feels like Souths are scraping the bottom of the barrel when it comes to outside backs. Really hope they prove me wrong.

Noticed he couldn’t help give himself a pat on the back for “putting his hand up and owing it”. Classy stuff.

Sheesh. Did the Roosters account for all the PR team’s overtime when they drew up Spencer’s contract…

NRL News: Leniu pleads guilty to monkey racial slur, apologises to Mam - 'I said the word but I didn't mean it in a racist way'

This is a tricky one to adjudicate. Mens rea? If Leniu said something what was his intent? Isn’t it a bit like a swinging arm that catches someone in the head? Did he mean to do it? Was it an accident? Can you compare a swinging arm with verbal abuse? I don’t know.

‘Fun and games, banter’: Leniu response to racial allegation beggars belief as ‘heat of the battle’ mentality harms NRL yet again

Bring an American invitational team over here every year to play in NRL pre-season trials. No one cares who they play in trials. Would make the pre-season more interesting.

If the NRL want to win over America, what happens in Vegas has to stay there all year around

Bunnies backline is pretty average. They’ll need Trell and Cody to put on a show.

Blake Taaffe could make the switch to halfback. He’s nippy and has got the hands and kicking game. He’s not big enough for fullback. Give Crichton a crack.

I dunno. His last few years at Souths were really good. He was running more, biting deep into the line and freeing Walker up to weave his magic. His game was growing, and it looked like they had a great halves connection going. Very harmonious.

Debate is over: Rabbitohs should regret Reynolds roster clanger as Broncos half gets last laugh with contract extension

Should never have happened. Everyone knew it at the time and everyone knows it painfully more now. How did a great traditionalist like Rusty let it happen? Still not clear on who ultimately made the decision but for me the buck stops with the owner. And to think they almost put AJ on the chopping block as well – with the all time try scoring record in his sights! Putrid decisions.

Yeah I get the feeling Jan 26 will get co-opted as Aussie day in the event of a date change. Risk is it’ll morph into some sort of unite the right type day rather than backyard cricket, bbq lamb, top 100 and what not. Be careful for what you wish for people….

“The biggest learning for me is not to take anything for granted. You don’t realise how important it is to you until you actually lose it.” Sheezus, that’s your biggest takeaway? Grow up son. Maybe one day you’ll learn a much more important lesson – you can’t just go around attacking people with hammers.

'I'll come back stronger physically and mentally': Amone vows to revive career after contract torn up over hammer attack

I think the most damning stat in the NRL is the percentage of players who stay at one club their whole career. This was the bitter-est pill to swallow for Souths supporters. Losing a much beloved club captain who grew up in the area – and who had so much to offer on and off the field – it shouldn’t have happened. For a club that’s so proud of their culture and so protective of their storied heritage, Souths really s**t the bed on that decision. The simple truth is both the NRL and the Rabbitohs should have done a lot more to keep him at the Bunnies. The ‘one club player’ is such an important part of rugby league’s narrative (and dare we use the word ‘brand’). For Souths fans it will leave a bad taste in the mouth for many years to come … regardless of how many premierships Ilias claims for the red and green.
