I think the most damning stat in the NRL is the percentage of players who stay at one club their whole career. This was the bitter-est pill to swallow for Souths supporters. Losing a much beloved club captain who grew up in the area – and who had so much to offer on and off the field – it shouldn’t have happened. For a club that’s so proud of their culture and so protective of their storied heritage, Souths really s**t the bed on that decision. The simple truth is both the NRL and the Rabbitohs should have done a lot more to keep him at the Bunnies. The ‘one club player’ is such an important part of rugby league’s narrative (and dare we use the word ‘brand’). For Souths fans it will leave a bad taste in the mouth for many years to come … regardless of how many premierships Ilias claims for the red and green.

Ilias v Reynolds: Will 2024 be the year that proves why Souths were right to let their talisman go?

Yikes. Lucky they got depth in the halves.

Warriors sweat on scans after Johnson hobbled by training mishap

Skillful in good ball positions, but his work rate is woeful. Not a team guy. Happy for him to prove everyone wrong.

Schuster v Schuster: If Manly can bring back 2021 Josh, they'll have one of the NRL's best backrowers

Geez I’m expecting the titans to raise the bar under Des.

NRL 2024 ladder predictions: The wooden spoon candidates - Tigers favourites for hat-trick but a new 'contender' emerges

But also “Potentially last chance to be coached by Bennett” and “Regular starting spot”. All good reasons.

Bennett's four magic words that made Flegler a Dolphin

Flanno is the key. Hasn’t been a top line coach for a bit but I suspect he’s still got what it takes. I’m wondering if they’ll be Dolphins-like under his command. Aiming to be competitive week-in and week-out is a good ambition for them as a team.

NRL Round 1 predicted teams: St George Illawarra Dragons - Double blow for Flanagan with recruits out for year

He’s definitely hard for a lot of adults to warm to, but there’s no denying the effort he puts in off the field – kids seem to love him especially. On-field there’s areas of his game that get scrutinized a lot. I reckon it would be great if South could unlock his kicking game. In a team with a fairly pedestrian kicking game he could definitely put that to better use. He’s got a huge boot. He should use it in general play more – for bombs and to clear them out of trouble. He needs to use that distance for drop outs too – his short drops outs are just about the worst in the game. I’ve also seen some deft grubbers at close range. It’s an arrow in his quiver that he needs to fire more.

Rugby league messiah, naughty boy or misunderstood: Latrell is a gift to the media that keeps on giving

They’ve got ready-made excuses to buy them time if they don’t perform. Interested in how Marshall handles the media scrutiny, as well as the day-to-day of coaching.

NRL Round 1 predicted teams: Wests Tigers - Signing Luai can't prevent their 2024 chances already looking painful

Geez they had a great run last year. Not sold on their pack though. Dom Young is a massive loss. And they’re always one head knock away from disaster…

NRL Round 1 predicted teams: Newcastle Knights - halves face competition from new recruits but season hinges on Ponga

Pacifika team in Cairns maybe? Could set up a good local derby with the Cows. Revive the old Foley Shield hostilities at NRL level…

Ten predictions for NRL season 2024: Surprise Origin picks, coaching changes and the Eels return to finals football

Definitely. That’s an all out attack option. Especially behind a pack going forward. I like it.

Bold pick for Turbo rinsing the Toads.

Ten predictions for NRL season 2024: Surprise Origin picks, coaching changes and the Eels return to finals football

Astute analysis as always. I think the loss of Sele is understated though. He was really good. Also Tass and AJ bringing deep kicks out of their end is a bit of a weakness. The forwards will need to do a lot of heavy lifting to get on the front foot when that happens. Souths are also weak at defusing attacking kicks in the air. I actually prefer the idea of Campbell Graham on a wing. But they’ll go alright. Definitely one thing they can leave in the past are Trells short drop outs. Has he ever nailed one?

NRL Round 1 predicted teams: South Sydney Rabbitohs - If Latrell fires and Wighton fits in, Bunnies can go all the way

The Wahs played so well as a team in 2023, but a lot of their success was due to SJ making that happen. Has he got another Dally M level season in him?

NRL Round 1 predicted teams: After a stellar 2023, can the Warriors hit the heights again with Roger on board?

Oh Mitch. Take the plea deal.

Kaufusi for mine. He’s lazy.

Fonua-Blake finds new home as Sydney club gets million-dollar Christmas present

Good get for the Sharkies! Mind you, we all said the same thing about Finucane signing a 4-year deal at the same age. He’s been ok I suppose. Drives the standards and what not. Old Addin seems to get a bit restless though. Hopefully he goes the distance …

Marnus form slump becoming a concern as Aussies grind Pakistan into Perth dust with all-round dominance

I’m expecting these guys to go well. Should never have gotten rid of fogarty but anyway. Still got heaps of talent. Looking forward to their derbies against the phins!

Pressure Points: If anyone can overcome the Gold Coast curse, Des Hasler is that man

No brainer decision for mine. Already won premierships. Time right to make some coin. Seems like the perfect way to manage a short career like pro sport. Who knows… might even win a few games.

'No pen to paper here': Luai throws doubt on $6m Tigers deal - but tells teammates he is leaving the Panthers

Yeah the Tigers have always given off the vibe that they’re constantly looking for that one person outside the club to come in and fix everything. Time to looks inwards – grab your own destiny by the scruff of the neck and give it a bloody good shake.

Pressure Points: Benji is the unseen party in the Tigers' boardroom upheaval - but he might benefit the most from it

Yikes. Well I guess winning starts now? Or do we great a refreshed excuse for losing …

Pressure Points: Wighton could be the last piece in Souths' jigsaw – or the albatross that will hang around their necks

Tass was one of the Bunnies best players last year. Improving that particular position doesn’t seem overly astute for a team with deficiencies in their kicking game and attitude towards defence. I’m hoping Wighton’s greatest contribution to the team is lifting Trell’s involvement. But Souths need to embrace a season-long, defence-based game. Their attack will take care of business if they can commit to the grind.
