1. He isn’t signalling his own fours before Andy Roberts bowls him that bouncer.
2. He doesn’t make the Kim Hughes comments on radio.
3. As much as it pains me to write this. He doesn’t tell the bouncer that he’s going to go on radio and rip into that hotel that fateful night.

I’m going off memory here. I remember Hooksey being on a Fox Sports panel show and he was saying while he respected what Bob Simpson did for Australian cricket he said he “did nothing for my career.” I’m sure i’ve either read or seen Hooksey being interviewed about Bob Simpson coming in as coach and he kind of repeated the Ian Chappell line on coaching. Hooksey was 12th Man for that SCG test against India. I can find a headline in SMH archives dated Friday, December 20, 1985 titled “Support for Simpson.” I also remember Bob Simpson making some quote about “that it would be good to see David score runs away from the Adelaide Oval”. When Hooksey was dropped from Australia he went and plummeted a 243 against NSW at Adelaide oval. I was hoping this would be enough to get him on that NZ tour. It wasn’t.

In talking about cricket politics, i wonder how much disservice his international career did once Bob Simpson took over as coach? Ian Chappell and Bob Simpson have one of the worst all time feuds in Australian Cricket and everyone knew how much David was in the Ian Chappell camp.

I’ve probably seen every Youtube footage of David that there is around. Classic case of blowing a century. It’s Adelaide during the 82/83 WSC series. David is playing on his home ground against England and is on song. He’s on 76 gets a full toss, holes out in the deep. He could of hit that anywhere instead straight to the fielder. Just a shame he could never shake that “get out” shot.

Another great article. No player brings up more what ifs for me than Hooksey. What I felt hurt his game at test level was his weakness against off spin and he had too many easy catch shots in his make up. No player when on song was as thrilling to watch as David. Just the sheer arrogance and stroke play was unbelievable. To this day I’m still enthralled by his career. Check out all the averages for the 83/84 series against Pakistan. Imran didn’t bowl and Abdul Qadir couldn’t get wickets. That was the big missed opportunity.

Great writing and another excellent article! There was a push for Wayne Phillips to take over. Wow! We say farewell to two of the best captains who should of long termed captained Australia. In Greg Chappells latest book he pushed for Rod to Captain. A board member said he’s too close to Ian Chappell. Greg’s response was what do you think I am. I’m his brother.

Really interested in those mid eighties era selections and what was going on with the side. I remember when David Hookes got dropped he went about pounded a double hundre against NSW which i was hoping was good enough for him to get on the New Zealand tour. Unfortunately that didn’t happen.

Classic what if’s. Hookes had a belter of an 82/83 season. Then goes to the World Cup and has a poor series. He bags Kim Hughes on a radio program and Yallop takes his place for the 83/84 home series against a Pakistan side that has a no bowling Imran Khan and an Abdul Qadir who struggles for wickets. All the batsmen feasted on runs including G.Yallop. If Hookes plays that series who knows where his career would of gone? His issue was that he had too many “get out” shots and really struggled with off spin bowling.

Another great article and thoroughly enjoyed it. If the Death Star of cricket had any weakness it was leg spin. Holland should of gone and Marsh as Captain with David Hookes as his vice.

Good question. Graham Gooch was a fine player of pace bowling and averaged 44.83 against the West Indies. K.Wessels brings in the left hand option and had a higher average against the West Indies at 52.38.

Harvey – they lost their mantle in 1995. That is 25 years ago. I’ve lost count of how many West Indies are turning the corner articles I’ve read since. Where did everybody go? And it’s not as if they are hanging around the top 4 sides. They have been down near the bottom of the test rankings for years now.
