KPM, some fair points there, however i’d say its a pretty big call to say club football ‘overwhelms’ the international game. Euro’s and African Cup of Nations this year will attest. In a relative sense of course Football’s club program is much more extensive than Rugby’s.
I’d say Barnes’s point at heart is that if you expanded say the Six Nations (which i’ve seen mentioned by Rugby fans on this site) then you begin to lose what makes it what it is. If Rugby had 8-10 strong nations in Europe then surely the logistics involved would mean that an annual tournament would not be possible? Even if you could do it would an ‘8 Nations’ or ’10 Nations’ tournament dilute the existing rivalries too much?
