Like these types of discussions. I wrote one the other month about coach killers. Actions by players that hurt a teams chances of winning. Other heroic actions can be a one on two contested mark, winning an important free kick or keeping the ball in to the advantage of a teammate. Dishonoured act could be increasing the stats with a kick when the percentage play was to let the ball go out of bounds, 50m penalties (may already be done), kicking backwards to a player that has no option and going to a contest instead of allowing a teammate a one-on one contest in a better poition.
Alternative stats that would split the pack
Then there is always the good old 50 metre penalty just when you have a team locked in your forward 50, it eases the pressure.
The difference between contenders and pretenders in the AFL
Tom Williams should be made to do man up duty at training. It is these simple things that players fail to do that frustrate me. The one that annoys me is when a player tries to switch the ball but instead of kicking laterally to a player in space, they kick 50 metres backwards and then the opposition press up and you are stuffed.
The difference between contenders and pretenders in the AFL
If there was ever a role model for a player that played the percentages and did all the little things right, it would be Corey Enright. Always nullifies a contest, makes sure the ball goes over when it has to, hits targets, takes the marks that he needs to and is expected to and never goes to ground. If every player does the little things well 95% of the time, you will often win as everything else can take place from there
The difference between contenders and pretenders in the AFL
They key to coaching and strategy is everyone knowing each other and how they play. If a player who is not skilled has it, then you tend to go boundary. If a skilled player has it, then it should be corridor. In the last quarter against West Coast, all our skilled players touched the ball and we didn’t turn it over. We are playing the Malthouse style each game, it depends on who has the ball that determines if it works or not.
Blue reality hits home for Carlton
Nice list there mate. Have been trying to find somethign like that. Plowman and O”Rourke are 2 that could be possible, keeping in mind they were picks 2 and 3 and same with Jaksch who was pick 12 from memory. I don;t think it will take a draft pick. I think if you offer experienced players, they would take it.

And how many of them are key position players. Surely with this years draft loaded with KPP forwards, you sacrifice the midfield strategy and get key forwards that win you games. We drafted Kennedy years ago and gave him away which I don’t regret. But the time has come to get 2 key forwards of the future
Blue reality hits home for Carlton
That is the next issue, how he goes with taggers. He played well against Collingwood but not as influential. The tendancy may be to push him back to half forward or play him out of the square as he has the capability based on the fact he played mostly as a forward.
Time to appreciate Stevie Johnson
I know who Ross Lyon would tag. Go back to the qualifying fnal last year. Johnson was BOG in first quarter then got the Crowley tag and was shut out of the game.
Time to appreciate Stevie Johnson
Since he has gone into the midfield, you appreciate just how good he is as a footballer. He has often been over looked because he has made things look easy, but has been one of the best players of the last decade. Helps being in a great team, but even when Ablett was there, was a stage where he was just as good as the little master
Time to appreciate Stevie Johnson
You got me there. I know it is more than just v Hawthorn. Do you think he deserved AA last year?
Time to appreciate Stevie Johnson
Most inspirational no doubt. Think about the last 2 games against Hawthorn. Johnson averaged 33 disposals and kicked 7 goals. Also last season, may have won the Brownlow if not for suspension.
Time to appreciate Stevie Johnson
The point about suspensions is fair and maybe the odd staging for free, but for me that is him. Some of the greatest players in the history of the league had a bad temper and would get suspended. Right now, statistically, he is for me second best and as I said, it isn’t just about statistics. The fact remains, if you wanted a player to make a match winning play, Johnson would be the man you want the ball with.
Time to appreciate Stevie Johnson
I meant fear of winning praise. If I could edit it I would.
The fear of winning for Bomber
A majority of teams want to score. However you need to be able to defend and if the other team is on top of you, then you nned to make it a scrap and be hard to score against to keep yourself in the game. Eventually it will turn, but the result will not matter unless for that short period, you were able to hold up defensively.
AFL teams must learn to love defence
